Is this dress offensive?

This dress was bought in America 20 years ago. It's a Disney Small World dress that depicts differing nationalities. It's age 2-3.

Someone said they didn't think it's very PC so I just want to check. I'm happy to be told either way.

Is this dress offensive?

Yes I would. It’s a skirt that is small with the tiniest detail to a grown up - like I said previously, I’d think cute skirt & that’s it. I wouldn’t be able to tell you what the dolls look like/what their features are but a glance at a lovely skirt.

I’d be offended that they were offended! I would also be extremely impressed that they can make out anything on it as what little kid stands still while you inspect their clothing.

This is a very convincing argument.

That must be why it's absolutely OK to dress your kids in gollywog merch, as long as the gollywogs are very very small.

sunseaandme · 20/01/2023 19:42

Yes I agree with others and think perhaps could be deemed offensive so best not to let them wear it

anyolddinosaur · 20/01/2023 19:45

Those who think an image on a kiddie's dress is so important should try reading Woke Racism By John McWhorter for an explanation of why this is a distraction from, you know, actually doing something about people's real problems.

As for those who think a kiddie's outfit is any way comparable to threats of violence or an ideology that permanently damages the health of children (and is often accompanied by violent threats to anyone who disagrees with them) - they are too childish for words..

Do the people who think it's fine also think that gollies are OK? Just curious

Shockingly the gift shop in Goathland sells them, right at the back of the store has a huge display of them for sale. Claiming to be harmless, from a bygone age. Rebadged as the Jolly Golly Family. They have a sign up requesting ‘no photos’

No one is saying any of this. The OP specifically asked about a specific image on a specific item. People here are responding to that. No one is suggesting that this is the most important way or the only way, or the best way, or a good way of combatting racism in general.

We're not out protesting about the dress. We're just telling OP it could cause offence ffs.

I would LOVE to put my DD in this, it’s lovely. It’s just a cute, adorable dress with little people on. That’s all it is imo.

People are offended by the smallest of things these days t& if you’re that way inclined, you can find something to be upset about many times a day.

Not 1 person I know would look at this skirt & think anything other than cute skirt.

Oh so is that the litmus test, if ones circle thinks it's all good, then its good....

Most my circle think most police are racist scumbags and rapists, I don't think this, only a minority are rotten, I think the majority are decent enough, but by your logic, maybe they all have a point?😜

You're making an assumption that people are not. People can have more than one thought on the go, and be chatting shit on social media whilst also thinking about significant topics.

Lentil63 · 20/01/2023 20:12

The world has tipped on its axis if that is offensive! A small small world had a message, dramatically overlooked by the wokeratie who would condemn this pretty innocent skirt.

@SweetcornFritter I looked into Pucca a little more. Turns out

Although she is usually depicted with her eyes closed (which is also the case with both Bruce and Ssoso), she will sometimes opens her eyes in some animations (like in the episodes Dance, Pucca, Dance and The Usual Ching, where it shows Pucca with red eyes) and in some official art.

And?

Racism and racial stereotyping is a real problem.

BewareTheLibrarians · 20/01/2023 20:15

@SweetcornFritter The Korean artist has drawn her with her eyes closed. You have assumed, just going by your comments so far, that those were her “natural” eyes. Your point was that how could the dress be unacceptable if Korean artists were also drawing eyes as lines. Except they weren’t drawing her eyes as lines. They drew them as closed. When her eyes are open, they’re drawn as very round.

Where does the real problem start? Is it when ds is punched in the face and pushed over by kids shouting racial slurs? Is it when kids start calling him racial slurs? Is it whatever is in their society that makes those kids think it’s acceptable to call him racial slurs?

Of course racial stereotypes aren’t on a par with violence. But it can very often be the root of that violence, so worth paying attention to.

@ozymandiusking I'm in my 50s. What generation are you?

BewareTheLibrarians · 20/01/2023 20:51

@ozymandiusking Brainwashed by whom to think what? That outdated stereotypes aren’t cute? That casual racism also isn’t cute? Not really a negative is it.

@StarDolphins in this situation, where East Asian people and people with East Asian heritage have said they find the character on the dress offensive/uncomfortable, do you believe that your opinion is as important as theirs? More important? Less important?

Same importance.

There’s nothing more embarrassing than people claiming the worlds gone mad/people will find anything to moan about - just because they’re not personally offended by something that is upsetting to many other people.

I can guarantee that these are the ones that would complain the most if this was a negative image that resembled them.
