Silent reflux what worked for you?

At the end of my tether DS is crying, I’m crying it’s just getting too much. We’re on gaviscon which is helping slightly but not massively

what worked for your babies?

Anyone?

Tongue tie division at 4 months, after 3 months of omeprazole doing FA & gaviscon just causing constipation.

Memom · 10/01/2023 15:10

DD was bottle fed and after numerous medications were prescribed the only thing that worked was reduced lactose milk. From memory I think it was called 'comfort formula' at one point she had a few months on soya milk. A horrible experience seeing little one in pain. Hope you find something that helps.

@Fran92 can I ask what symptoms you saw that made you/docs initially think it was reflux?

DS had his tongue tie cut but symptoms appeared about a month later so I don’t think his is tongue tie related

Dairy free formula. Infant reflux is usually caused by a dairy allergy.

BotherThat · 10/01/2023 23:30

Dr brown bottles, anti-reflux milk, gaviscon and omeprazole. Mostly tho just time.

SassyPants87 · 11/01/2023 00:04

@Jobabob I'm exclusively pumping and I’m vegan so can’t be dairy allergy

@BotherThat how did your child get on with the omeprazole? And is it true they tend to grow out of it and it gets better when weaning!?

Mine had eczema, silent reflux, undiagnosed tt. I went dairy and egg free (I see you're vegan). He used to bring up the milk and then swallow again which burned his throat. Have you tried omeprazole or ranitidine? It does get better.

mishmased · 11/01/2023 00:48

What helped us was feeding little and offer whilst keeping upright. Having baby in the sling boy buggy. Slightly tilting mattress at an angle. No car rides immediately after feeding. Allergy testing at 6 months. Oh and the kangaroo hold.

My baby had silent reflux from very young and the gp advised us to change her milk from normal sma milk to anti reflux and it was like day and night she was so so much better on the anti reflux milk

Spaghetti201 · 11/01/2023 00:59

Burping every few minutes when giving a feed.

comfyshoes2022 · 11/01/2023 01:52

Time.

Lianna93 · 11/01/2023 02:06

@SassyPants87 My lo had terrible silent reflux which was being caused by cmpa - I see you're vegan though. However, could be a soya allergy as the protein tends to be quite similar.
My lo is doing tons better after being prescribed omeprazole and Aptamil pepti 1.
You could always try an elimination diet to rule out allergies - lots of great facebook pages for breastfeeding babies with allergies - I found them very helpful when I went dairy free! :)

She was fine on it. It helped, but it was not a magic cure. She went on it around 10 weeks and came off it around 10 months.
She’s 19 months now and still has very occasional bouts if she eats a lot, so we tend to go for little and often.

My older kid had it as well. For her, weaning helped and we did it at 4 months (under hospital guidance). For my younger one, weaning made it worse. But time helped both of them and they are both over the worst of it by a year old.

LapinR0se · 11/01/2023 07:26

for us it was a hydrolysed milk called Althera and nexium (ezomeprazole)

crackersforcheese · 11/01/2023 07:36

Used an organic formula (kendamil) which also had no palm oil as that can irritate reflux. Burped every oz during feed, kept upright for at least half an hour after a feed. Omeprazole, life saver!! Xx

@Fran92 omg his tongue tie has reattached!! And also his silent reflux symptoms have been a recent thing not something from birth so I can’t help but think maybe the reattachment has caused silent reflux symptoms!? When you got it cut did it improve feeding and reflux symptoms pretty much straight away? I think I’ll have to get it cut again as he’s just taking in so much air on the bottle due to poor latch

OP posts:
Fran92 · 11/01/2023 13:27

Hi @SassyPants87 sorry only just seen your reply.

The initial symptoms were difficulty feeding and general discomfort, poor latch when trying to BF (gave up after a few weeks) but the silent reflux would cause DD to almost choke (wasn’t choking, just difficultly getting it back down as it came up just not out) when the acid came up and bad acid breathe. Would be sick sometimes but not every day. Hence the drs thought silent reflux, I managed to video her doing this discomfort crying / struggling swallowing thing and diagnosed from there.

I followed down somebody on IG and bought the reflux handbook, it advised on feeding positions, bottle types to use (not MAM etc but the old school teats) and it somewhat improved but then went into TT can be the cause, as reflux is a symptom of something and low and behold within the week of the cut no more discomfort feeding, generally happier and slept better and then weaned off omeprazole.

if it’s reattached definitely get it looked into. . Did you follow any oral exercises afterwards, we did but not religiously and don’t know whether that helped too but straight away the latch on the bottle just seemed right and not slipping to the end.

I knew from 2 days old there was a TT but was told it looked mild from the MW even though i was crying in pain BF & the choking / bringing up they put down to mucus on lungs but was still happening 3 months down the line…

the IG was rockabye_hub and then she works with somebody else who does all the oral exercises.

SassyPants87 · 11/01/2023 13:35

@Fran92 thank you I’ve had a look at that instagram page and she seems fab! We weren’t told to do any exercises! Maybe that’s why it has reattached!?

who did you get the tongue tie division done by? And did they provide the exercises you do?

Bottle feeding sitting up in a swing it car seat With formula (think we used Aptamil). Poor latch too so I made the holes bigger so it was easier to get the milk and that worked well. He was weaned onto solids at 4 months too as that was also normal at the time. Once he was on solids he pretty much stopped having issues.

Fran92 · 13/01/2023 16:46

Hi @SassyPants87 i actually went to a professor / consultant ENT via private health insurance.

SassyPants87 · 13/01/2023 19:16

@Fran92 got it snipped again today hopefully shouldn’t have problems with reattachment as it was scar tissue. Fingers crossed for better feeding and reflux to go away!

SassyPants87 · 13/01/2023 19:17
