Silent reflux what worked for you?

At the end of my tether DS is crying, I’m crying it’s just getting too much. We’re on gaviscon which is helping slightly but not massively

what worked for your babies?

Omeprazole.

2 nights a week on weight-based paracetamol dosing through the night.

Looking back, we needed more people. 2 adults to one refluxy baby is not enough.

Riding it out until they were six months old. Nothing worked. Then their gut just matured

Ranitidine helped massively with my LO. Had to keep upping the dose as she grew. I tried cutting dairy from my diet for a few weeks but made no difference (I see you are vegan anyway). I noticed a clear pattern that it was worse if I ate anything with tomatoes in so avoided those. I also ended up putting her to sleep on her front and with the cot tilted. Not recommending this as obvs its against the advice, but she just couldn't sleep on her back. And we never really used the carry cot pram, always had her in car seat then into pram seat fairly early. But also what others have said - time. It does pass. It's absolutely hellish though so take care of yourself and accept any help that is offered.

Early weaning on the advice of the paediatrician linked to baby clinic

Just wondered how you’re getting on? We we in a similar position. Did the reflux go? X

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/08/2023 09:02

Gaviscon seems to only work with mild reflux

Omeprazole under prescription has helped many babies I've cared for

Sometimes reflux is a cause so need to find the symptom - cutting our dairy can help some babies

SassyPants87 · 14/08/2023 09:20

@natminkey the things that worked for us was getting his tongue tie cut again as it had reattached. We then moved him onto neocate formula which is completely dairy free, even though I am vegan there could have been something else he was reacting too and I didn’t want to make my diet restrictive and be miserable not being able to enjoy food. We also went to an osteopath which helped too and once my baby was sitting up more this naturally helped.

how old is your little one and have they been checked for tongue tie? This would always be my first thing to check

Thanks for replying @SassyPants87 My baby had her tongue re divided last week, sleep is horrendous, she’ll be 6 months next week so might start weaning? So glad things improved for you. Maybe it takes a couple of weeks for tongue to establish and stop swallowing air. We went to Gentle Birth and Beyond so know they are good. How old was your LO when it improved? Know one woukd understsabd this unless going through it.. x

SassyPants87 · 14/08/2023 09:35

@natminkey carmelle is amazing you are under very good care! Even though my baby’s reflux improved after 2nd tongue tie is did reattach again but not as restrictive. I then saw Faye at Rockabye Hub who gave us oral exercises to do and that really helped. I would give it a few weeks for tongue function to improve and hopefully you will see a difference. In the meantime you could try using a thickener in the milk or gaviscon as an interim solution until tongue function is optimal and then wean baby off it to see if the reflux has settled. Reflux for us improved around the 5 month mark.
when the reflux was peak it was so stressful and I just chucked every solution at it and I really wish I hadn’t and just focussed on one thing it a time. But hindsight is a wonderful thing 😊

Dentinox drops and using only Dr brown anti colic bottles. Tongue tie sorted and Stopping breastfeeding completely as I needed to use nipple shield which caused more gas.

natminkey · 14/08/2023 09:39

did you continue with Gaviscon? X

Nell80 · 14/08/2023 10:34

@natminkey we had some success, not complete but an improvement, when we stopped feeding so much on demand. This is probably very controversial on here, but we found if baby was too full reflux was worse. Of we managed their intake a bit better - making sure we waiting at least 3 hours between feeds, they had less symptoms like throwing up lots of milk. They still throw up but much less and much less unhappy after a feed. This is just our experience though and not medical advice, but we found baby's "I'm hungry" cry and "I have sore reflux" cry were easy to mix up, and feeding more on top of that reflux pain was not helping. I hope you find an approach that works for you soon, it's so hard watching them be uncomfortable x

natminkey · 14/08/2023 12:19

Thanks @Nell80 She definitely feeds a lot so wil try this . But generally very content in the day, it’s just nights which are a total nightmare. X

Hey! Did the anti reflux milk cause constipation for your little one? Doctor told us to change to anti reflux too but caused terrible constipation so I’ve taken him off of it.
