Hi guys, me again DS has had fever all day today and has been taking calpol. I gave him calpol and nurofen 40 mins apart as his temp was 40.3. Is that okay?

im sure you can? but for max effect would do say calpol 12pm, neurofen 2pm etc

crimsonpeak · 22/12/2022 22:23

Not sure OP - usual advice is 60 mins. Ring 111 for advice? My DS was like this earlier in the week - took ages for temp to come down from 40.1 but it did eventually.

Exactfare · 22/12/2022 22:25

I've done it loads of times as my 2nd used to get fevers that calpol wouldn't touch.

I'd not worry as long a sits coming down now

It's fine as long as you adhere to max dosage guidelines

NishaaS123 · 22/12/2022 22:27

@Exactfare @cavily1806

thanks guys I went to AE yesterday and they gave it to him not that far apart. It’s the first time I have given it to him together as temp is just not coming down 😩

Recycledblonde · 22/12/2022 22:29

Yes it’s fine. I’m a paramedic btw.

Blendandmix · 22/12/2022 22:29

I give them at the same time? Didn't know you weren't supposed to... you can as an adult?

Katapolts · 22/12/2022 22:30

Yes, it's ok - just remember you can only give 3 doses of ibuprofen in 24 hours and 4 doses of paracetamol though. So he can't have anything else for at least 4-6 hours now.

It's usually better to space them out if you can so you don't end up with 6 hours of not being able to give anything. Giving them together isn't harmful though.

NishaaS123 · 22/12/2022 22:40

@Recycledblonde
thank you really gave my mind at ease

Eatentoomanyroses · 22/12/2022 22:42

just to reassure you. My toddler had a temp in the 40s all last weekend. Lowest I got it down to was 38.6 and even that was taking 2 hours after ibuprofen and then it seemed to shoot back up again.

WetBandits · 22/12/2022 22:46

Absolutely fine 🙂 staggering them is only so you can give something different at regular intervals and keep the fever at bay for longer, there’s no harm in giving them together Flowers

I hope your little one feels better soon.

dementedpixie · 22/12/2022 22:52

Nhs website says not to give together. It also says not to stagger doses unless under medical advice

miraveile · 22/12/2022 22:54

Is the fever coming down?

NishaaS123 · 22/12/2022 22:55

@Eatentoomanyroses

oh no how’s your little one now? When did they feel better? My one has had high temp since yesterday morning hoping for it to get better now.
@WetBandits thank you so much
@dementedpixie
the hospital gave it to him together yesterday aswell around 50 mins apart

OP posts:
NishaaS123 · 22/12/2022 22:55

@miraveile
yes it has gone from 40 to 39.2

OP posts:
Potato28 · 22/12/2022 22:56

Its fine
Done it loads

Just stick to the max dose of Calpol and ibuprofen and the amount of recommended time between doses

Potato28 · 22/12/2022 22:57

I would be more concerned if he has had both lots and still not going below 39.2
I would personally ring 111

NishaaS123 · 22/12/2022 22:58

@Potato28

i have just checked again and it is 38.8 now so it has coming down thankfully

OP posts:
Milkand2sugarsplease · 22/12/2022 22:59

Calpol every 4-6 hours apart and no more than 4 doses in 24hours.

Neurofen every 6-8 hours apart and no more than 3 doses in a 24 hour period.

They're different active ingredients so no harm in having them both together or staggered.

NishaaS123 · 22/12/2022 23:00

@Milkand2sugarsplease

thank you so much I have followed the doses.

Eatentoomanyroses · 22/12/2022 23:05

She started with the high temp on Friday night. It finally came down and stayed down on Sunday morning. She’s snotty but seems fine now.

NishaaS123 · 22/12/2022 23:07

@Eatentoomanyroses
aww bless, my DS has had high temp since Wednesday afternoon and still has it it comes down when he has calpol or nurofen and shoots back up. Hoping he gets better by tomorrow 🤞

NishaaS123 · 22/12/2022 23:13

@dementedpixie
its 37.5 now thankfully and he’s slept now poor bubba

Shadope · 22/12/2022 23:16

Calpol Paracetamol only reduced temps slightly - but about 1/2 a point. Nurofen is much better
