Toodler has fever of 38 and sore throat should I be worried?

Me and my husband have had a sore throat and feeling a bit unwell now today my baby has 38c fever and has a sorr throat but no cough or runny nose and is eating and drinking okay at the moment. Should I be worried for strep A? Couldn’t get a gp appointment and don’t want to take him down to A&E as there’s. A strike today they will be so so busy
any suggestions?

Give calpol and keep an eye on him. If he deteriorates I think you should call the NHS number and then maybe you'd just get prescribed antibiotics

NishaaS123 · 21/12/2022 16:38

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy yeah just gave him calpol I will wait and see if temp comes down. It’s so scary when they get I’ll and everywhere is so busy

Keep an eye on him but if you have the same thing and don’t feel too bad then it’s likely to be the same viral thing.

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy unlikely you’d get antibiotics for just the sore throat - my DS had Strep A symptoms and GP was only willing to swab because it didn’t look like a bacterial infection. Turned out it was viral and he went from extremely grotty to back to normal within 24 hours.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/12/2022 16:42

Yes, I know. I meant if he deteriorates and it clearly isn't a cold/just a sore throat

gogohmm · 21/12/2022 16:52

Does calpol bring it down, if so just keep an eye on him for now. Most infections are viral and aren't something drs can prescribe for

NishaaS123 · 21/12/2022 17:04

Thank you guys i have given him calpol half an hour ago and temp has gone down a few points. I guess it’s a viral thing, just the strep A nowadays scaring you.

Can you look at the throat to check for white patches on tonsils?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/12/2022 21:40

You've done the right thing.

Could be an ear infection.

Poor baby

Bronzeisthecolour · 21/12/2022 21:41

Just for future calpol never touches my kids temp. Ibuprofen all the way. Get antibiotics and he'll be fine.

BrutusMcDogface · 21/12/2022 21:42

My 12 year old has a sore throat and a temp of 40 😞

hope your baby is ok, op.

NishaaS123 · 21/12/2022 22:29

@Largethighsbadeyes I can’t seem to see any at the moment he’s been in AE for 2 hours but temp hasn’t come down they have taken his clothes off and given him ibuprofen which has helped a little bit

@Bronzeisthecolour

I totally echo this! Calpol does nothing for my little one

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/12/2022 22:56

You do have to be careful giving ibuprofen though depending on what's wrong.

For example never ever give ibuprofen to a child with chickenpox.
It blocks your bodies response to inflammation and so if you have chickenpox and give Nurofen your body cannot fight it the way it should

Also Nurofen is much harsher for your child's liver to process.

I mean, I say this but do use it, it definitely has its place but please do some research about it too

Truthseeker456 · 21/12/2022 23:04

Just wanted to say hope your little one gets better soon

NishaaS123 · 21/12/2022 23:56

Thank you for the kind words everyone, hospital gave him ibuprofen and his temp finally came down. They checked him and said his throat is inflamed so gave him antibiotics did swab for strep A but thankfully wasn’t that. Finally home now and he’s asleep x

OP posts:
Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/12/2022 08:52

Well that's one thing less to worry about then, glad it is not strep!

It's horrible when these things happen. You may have to continue the ibuprofen for another day or so.
Hope he recovers in time for Xmas x

NishaaS123 · 22/12/2022 12:00

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy yeah I had to give him ibuprofen again because he had high temp when he woke up. I hope so too it’s so horrible seeing them like this 😩

OP posts:
Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/12/2022 12:23

I know, you just want to take it away from them but can't :(

Make sure to be careful with Nurofen. I think it's no more than 3 doses in a 24 hour period.

NishaaS123 · 22/12/2022 13:06

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy
yes I have given him 2 in 24hours at the moment won’t give him anymore if needed will just have to be calpol :(
