What age did you stop using a baby monitor?

We're still using a monitor for our 3 year old - we can't hear her if we're downstairs in the living room, so it's handy to have.

Interested what age you stopped using a monitor?

I stopped using one for DC1 when they were a few months old apart from if we were staying somewhere where the bedrooms were out of earshot. We were in a flat for DC2 so I didn't bother and similarly DC3 had a loud voice from the start, was almost always with us and if they had been upset would have woken one of their siblings so I didn't use one.

machanicalmovement · 25/11/2022 08:27

We are still using ours, my son is 4. He's had seizures in the past and i'm terrified of it happening again in the night.

BuffaloCauliflower · 25/11/2022 08:29

From when he went into his own room at 18 months ish. That was the point he wasn’t waking as much, and his room is right next to us and he doesn’t have a door, just a baby gate, so we can see/hear him right away

I still use one for my 3 year old. If he’s being sick/has a seizure (has had febrile convulsions) I can’t hear him from my room. It gives me peace of mind.

JJJSchmidt · 25/11/2022 08:34

Dd1 was 5 - her room was on a separate floor so handy for us to shout if she was unwell/scared etc. Dd2 is 3 next month and still using it. We've since moved house but the layout means that we can't hear her from our room, so will use one until she can come in independently (still in her cot atm)

LoopDiL00p · 25/11/2022 08:35

We still use one for our 3 year old. If he starts calling for us, it means one of us can get to him before he comes into our bed (and never leaves)

Merrow · 25/11/2022 08:36

Still using it at almost 4 - he's a very noisy sleeper (yelps and things in his sleep) but also prone to nightmares, so it's useful to roll over and see if we need to go through as he's upset or he's just making weird sleep noises! He'll call us through if there's a general problem (duvet off) but when he has a nightmare he's not quite with it

TreacsPotNoodle · 25/11/2022 08:38

DS is 2.5 and we still use one.

He occasionally wakes in the night still if he's under the weather or has a nightmare and it gives us peace of mind.

gogohmm · 25/11/2022 08:39

Never used it, gave it to a friend. Lived in a flat

Woodlandarchitect11 · 25/11/2022 08:42

I think we stopped at 4ish. We kept using it because when DS was 2, I heard a weird noise and ran upstairs to discover he was choking on his own vomit in his sleep.

It was so scary! It still gives me nightmares even though he's much older now.

You do whatever feels right 😊

We still use one for our 3.5 year old because she's on a different floor of the house and she still wakes in the night.

OddsocksinmyDocs · 25/11/2022 20:12

We used it for about 2 weeks when she was born and didn't bother after that. Our house is small so she can be heard when crying etc and I didn't want to be constantly glued to the monitor :)

Ragwort · 25/11/2022 20:15

Never used one ... did buy one but it was so complicated to set up that we didn't bother!

LynLynette · 25/11/2022 20:20

I never had one at all. At first we lived in a one bed apartment so I knew we wouldn’t need it. We now live in a house and when 3yo dd started sleeping in her own room, I thought about getting one but didn’t in the end. We just check on her regularly. She spends half the night in our bed anyway.

AnnaKorine · 25/11/2022 20:23

First DC in third floor room 6, second in middle floor 3 (almost 4). We stopped using them at the same time, we figured at a certain point that they constantly walk downstairs if they need something so the monitor became redundant.

pimlicoanna · 25/11/2022 20:25

Ours are 5 and we still use them as we can chat to one another one them..it saves them shouting and me going in and out of their rooms!

BeanieTeen · 25/11/2022 20:31

About a year and a half or so - but we could hear easily in our house. Surely it depends on how big your house is?

SunshineAndFizz · 26/11/2022 18:06

Useful to hear from everyone - thanks!

We have DC2 now (3 months old, currently still in our room), and planning for when they'll need a monitor - wondering whether we'll need an extra one or just use DC1's.

Around 1 year old

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 26/11/2022 18:10

I used it until the oldest was about 4/5ish. Simply because it was handy to listen if they’re asleep because if I went in I would disturb them. Also useful to listen in when they age playing and I’m down stairs.

would probably use the Alexa for that now though

Endlesslaundry123 · 26/11/2022 18:10

Ours broke at 2 and we didn't replace it.
