Does anyone call a penis a cock?

I'm wondering because I've agonized over dd and what to call her bits, but haven't given nearly enough thought to dS.

And I'm thinking that I've always liked the word 'cock'. It's .. well, it's cocky. Proud. A bit jokey. But not aggressive at all - at least I don't think so.

Anyone?

I always said I'd teach my kids to use proper anatomical terms......till I went on holiday & overheard the precocious little girl next door saying "ooh mummy I got sand in my v'gina"

noooooo it sounded so wrong don't know why???!

sherbydrivinginhercar · 30/01/2008 22:36

and lol at threadlice

and wide eyes at immediate sea of disapproval

I don't entirely agree with you all - eg as I mentioned dd does say fanny (though that was, shamefully, accidental). I don't think either are particularly sexualized terms.

This may be a very personal thing tho - I don't want to have silly flower names, I want there to be a jokey, nickname kind of feeling, and I don't want there to be a huge disjunction between pre-sexual names and post-sexual ones.

I remember hearing cock as a child, and it really wasn't more than a 'I'm good in a pissing competition, me' type reference. It seemed interesting and quite proud. I liked it.

But I do see that everyone else is seeing it through their sex-life eyes, and it would therefore seem horrid. I use the word 'prick' in that context so don't have that reaction.

I call ds's his peanut. But he is 6 months old, and it did quite resemble a peanut when he was born. Probably won't call it that when he's old enough to understand in case he gets a complex! Willy and balls here. Cock is for sex talk imho, like pussy.

No idea what I would call a girls bits if I had a daughter though. I have vague memories of mine being called a tuppence.

onebatmother · 30/01/2008 22:53

NOOO! Cock is NOT like pussy! Not here anyway!

This is really quite odd, I had always thought of cock as a mildly more vulgar version of 'willy', wiht a little more chutzpah.

Whereas it's clearly pornographic to most of you.

Well, I got my answer, and now I know that if I call ds's penis a cock, he will be shunned, or we will have social services visit.

Speaking about chutzpah, what about putz(sp)?

What connotations/tone does that have? Is it like prick, i.e. rather derogatory?

Disenchanted · 30/01/2008 22:54

cock is a rude word.

willy isnt.

I would call a little girls bits a 'pussy'

its a sexual word.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 30/01/2008 22:55

You can't do right for doing wrong as a parent. I'm surprised no-one's berated for me for calling it a peanut yet.

harpsichordcarrier · 30/01/2008 22:55

yes I would agree, cock is like pussy.
well, not much like it, but ykwim.
you obviously don't read much porn obm, it is stuffed full of cocks

yummylittlelapin · 30/01/2008 22:55

LOL at Thready

fairyfly · 30/01/2008 22:56

Penis i have started to realise is awful, it's s weirdy and medical. I can even hear the voice it should be said in " GET OFF YOUR PENIS YOUNG CHILD AND SIT UP PROPERLY"

expatinscotland · 30/01/2008 22:56

what's wrong with willy and lulu?

fairyfly · 30/01/2008 22:57

Cocky is nothing like pussy.

You wouldn't call a little girls lady a pussy, that is wrong, it's sexual.

A cock is just a cock.

Disenchanted · 30/01/2008 22:58

argh i meant i wouldnt

Disenchanted · 30/01/2008 22:59

My gran calls willies 'piggies'

still makes me snigger

Heathcliffscathy · 30/01/2008 22:59

they're only words people.

onebatmother · 30/01/2008 23:00

why thank you fairyfly, that's exactly what I think. a cock is just a cock, it's upfront and straightforward. Boom boom. But in an honest, Shakespearian kind of way?

Harpsi do you think it's a porn thing?

fairyfly · 30/01/2008 23:01

Oh sophable thats my boyfriends excuse for everything, my answer always is, if they are only words, don't use them.

Disenchanted · 30/01/2008 23:02

When Im talking about DHs penis its a willy, when we are having sex its a cock!

lol

fairyfly · 30/01/2008 23:04

Oh thats my favourite favourite quote ever.

A cock is just a cock but in an honest shakesperian way.

Lets hope Bards don't start chatting us up with that one.

Right though. I think. Even though it's just a word. My boys have said cock, if they said pussy, well ........... i can't even barely talk now at the thought.

WriggleJiggle · 30/01/2008 23:08

Please don't. It caused all sorts of difficulties with a child I know, as teachers and social workers deemed his language too 'sexual' as it were. Ok, there were other issues there as well, but that use of language certainly caused alarm.

onebatmother · 30/01/2008 23:09

but pussy is soooo not the same!

You all watch waay to much porn.

Cock has been an honest, probably working class way of describing male genitalia for 100 years.

Pussy has only ever been porno.

fairyfly · 30/01/2008 23:10

Onebat, yes yes yes, or is that too sexual?
