Accidentally cut DS’s finger while clipping nails

DH accidentally clipped DS’s finger while clipping his nails. There’s a small cut which has been bleeding for 10 mins and I feel so upset! I’ve managed to stop the bleeding, applied some Sudocrem and then folded over the mitts of his sleep suit so he doesn’t scratch himself or make it worse. Is this okay? Is Sudocrem okay to apply? What else should I do? 🥺

My baby is only 3 weeks old 🥺🥺 after research I now know I shouldn’t have clipped his nails

Aw poor things. I would take the sudocrem off. Honestly it will do nothing except get in the way of healing. As long as it’s stopped bleeding I would leave it until tomorrow and apply a very thin layer of Vaseline.

Wishiwasatailor · 15/11/2022 03:37

Whilst unlikely watch out for signs of infection red hot oozing and get him checked out if you see those signs

Dalooah · 15/11/2022 03:58

Honestly don't feel so bad. Stuff happens, it wasn't intentional. Your DC will heal impressively quickly- just keep an eye as I'm sure you will!

Mc3209 · 15/11/2022 04:09

OP, this is almost a right of passage. Feels terrible when it happens, but keep it clean and dry and it will be just fine, promise. Just wait until he rolls off the bed/sofa on your watch by accident

Porridgeislife · 15/11/2022 05:16

Don’t worry, we’ve all done things like this. He’ll be absolutely fine and he’s so tiny it will heal really fast.

We used one of those baby electric nail files when ours was asleep & they’re much less scary than clippers & can’t cut them. Ours was Cherish brand from Amazon.

Iizzyb · 15/11/2022 05:28

Been there too op. I was so scared of doing it again I used to cut ds nails when he was asleep in the car seat - Debenhams car park, pull over in a lay by on the way home from the seaside. That was me.

Also visiting my dsis so she would cut them for me.

Don't worry it will heal up - just keep an eye on it.

Mine didn't roll off the sofa but he did plenty of other things I still cringe at now...x

Did this when my baby was about 8 weeks old. I felt awful. He cried for a min or two, me much longer. It healed very quickly. Your baby will be absolutely fine

leafinthewind · 15/11/2022 05:32

I did that. I was so upset I couldn't bring myself to go into town to meet a friend as I planned. She was so kind and told me what I'm telling you: your baby will be fine, neither if you will use clippers again for a decade, now think about something else. Go on. Think about Christmas dinner, or a night on the beach - anything!

dreamerkr · 15/11/2022 06:30

Thank you so much guys 🥺 so I should just let it get air and not do anything?

If you’ve put a bit of antibac on it it’s fine. I’ve nipped my baby’s finger a couple of times. Really put off doing nails now, but she’s scratching a lot.

Miriam101 · 15/11/2022 09:43

We did this with our second- twice- first DP and then me! You feel bad at the time but it's really no big deal. Just wipe it with an antibac wipe or something and let it heal with nothing else on. TBH I don't think we even did the antibac. It was fine.

sanityisamyth · 15/11/2022 09:44

I did that! I nearly took DS's thumb pad off when he moved. ExH distracted him 🤬. It bled for a bit but he was fine. I bought much safer clippers afterwards.

stopbeeping · 15/11/2022 09:46

My husband did this and I was ready to divorce him I was soooooo cross
His finger had healed the next morning
I now do all nails without his input
It was a blazing row
I know how upset and cross you feel
We sort of laugh about it now

CheeseAlways · 15/11/2022 09:47

I also did this!! It bled so much I was in such a panic but honestly she was fine. Don’t worry xx

greenacrylicpaint · 15/11/2022 09:49

it's on the list of things that happen to (almost) every parent.
like rolling off the sofa etc

congrats to your lovely baby!

HeatwaveToNightshade · 15/11/2022 09:49

I did this to DS2 when he was a few weeks old. It bled and bled. DP and I decided to take him to the GP surgery. We weren't even sure if this was a good idea, but it gave us a focus because I was panicking like mad. DP doesn't drive, so he sat in the back with DS and held a tissue firmly on his finger. About halfway down the road, the bleeding stopped. I felt terrible, but their wee fingers are so tiny it's hard to see what you're doing!

PineappleWilson · 15/11/2022 09:55

DH did that when DS was a similar age. DS is now 13 and I can still tell you which finger it was. We phoned NHS Direct because we were concerned that it wouldn't sop bleeding and they asked questions like "have you amputated the top of his finger?" and DH and I were both in bits.

For us it was a little snip, more we think pulling his nail forward away from the bed, and DS has no memory of it. I'm guessing that your DS is fine now, but DH wasn't allowed near nail clippers for a looong time and I generally do the kids' nails.

Big hugs, as I can still clearly remember how crap it makes you feel when you accidentally hurt your baby like that. He will be fine long before you'll lose your jitters.

ChocoFudge · 15/11/2022 09:57

Try not to worry, happens to plenty of parents. I always filed baby nails while they were tiny, didn't trust myself with the clippers (I'm clumsy at the best of times!)

gamerchick · 15/11/2022 09:58

It's like falling off the bed. Rite of passage imo.

I used to nibble them off when they were asleep instead if they needed it.

LemonsAndCherries · 15/11/2022 10:01

Get the safe clippers if you don't have them. I did it to my 5 day old baby who was scratching himself with the talons he was born with. He'll be fine. Sudocreme is fine to use imo.

He also rolled for the first time off the bed.... I called the GP manically worried, I could practically hear him rolling his eyes.

Then my 2nd also rolled off the bed. Again, I was mortified. This won't be the last 'accident' so please don't beat yourself up!

Longbin · 15/11/2022 10:03

I did this too. I'm too scared to cut them now even though she's a toddler, I use an electric baby nail file from Amazon which is so much easier. It healed so quickly though and she was fine... it's just me that's now traumatised!

SunshineAndFizz · 15/11/2022 10:18

I did this to my 7 week old a couple of weeks ago. I felt awful too, but he was fine.

I didn't put anything on it, just made sure it was clean and dry.

Is it just me or does baby's skin heal faster?!!

ILoveXmasChocsInNov · 15/11/2022 10:56

I nipped DC's finger when she was just a week old or so. There was lots of crying. From me. She was fine. Barely registered it.

Yes, just leave it be. Don't put anything on it. It will heal soon enough.

Morechocmorechoc · 15/11/2022 11:00

I did this to my toddler. He ended up woth a really nasty toe infection. It was very obvious so you'll know. Just keep an eye and plaster during the day to keep dirt out and off at night to let it breathe and heal
