Accidentally cut DS’s finger while clipping nails

DH accidentally clipped DS’s finger while clipping his nails. There’s a small cut which has been bleeding for 10 mins and I feel so upset! I’ve managed to stop the bleeding, applied some Sudocrem and then folded over the mitts of his sleep suit so he doesn’t scratch himself or make it worse. Is this okay? Is Sudocrem okay to apply? What else should I do? 🥺

You could also soak in salt water for the germs.

::holds hand up::

Done it here too. With two different babies. I decided that baby number three was getting his nails trimmed later.
By someone else.

I did this. Felt horrendous. DS was honestly fine. I just let it air and it healed very quickly. No lasting damage!

If it's a superficial cut and you're breast feeding, pop some milk on it. Lots of resources online explaining how this will help speed up healing and the anti-bacterial properties.

I did this too, DD was fine but I was distraught- I still refuse to cut her nails now and make DH do it and she is 15 months 😱

I still remember the morning i did it to our DS. I was mortified, heartbroken and just felt awful.
But stuff happens you will be fine as will your DC

ImprobablePuffin · 15/11/2022 11:29

I'm pretty sure this is basically a parenting right of passage. We did it too and you feel bad but actually don't worry about it. Your child is fine so don't give it another thought x

Wheredoallthepensgo · 15/11/2022 11:53

Baby nails are very soft so I used to nibble DS's ones down a bit when he was feeding (for distraction and keeping him still).

I just didn't trust myself with clippers until he was a lot older!

Sorry you feel bad OP but honestly it will probably be invisible by tomorrow!

I didn't do this with my first but repeatedly with my second, until I bought baby nail clippers. My story is how I called 111 after my first fell off a chair/ bed and bumped his head the first three times it happened. For comparison, at the same age second child was messing about on a dining chair and slid off head first. This was the exact moment I entered the room carrying his big brother's birthday cake and all the party guests were singing. I kept going until I got to the table and put the cake down. By that time, second child had stopped crying. They'll be fine OP😊

DH did this when dd1 was teeny. She let out that awful cry they do from pain. I remember growling 'what have you DONE' at him like a demon tiger queen had possessed my voice, it was terrifying. But she was completely fine.

OP, this is almost a right of passage. Feels terrible when it happens, but keep it clean and dry and it will be just fine, promise. Just wait until he rolls off the bed/sofa on your watch by accident

My DH has done this twice to our five month old, one I had to get checked at the hospital as the scab turned black (it was fine). Agree with the above so please don’t stress, just let the air get to it and keep an eye on it.

....also use baby nail scissors and not baby nail clippers if you use clippers.

Lovethatforyou · 15/11/2022 21:34

I did this too OP :( I rang 111 in a panic re infection. DS was abs fine. I used the little nail scissors after that - they’re much better x

Thank you so much guys 🥺 so I should just let it get air and not do anything?

If you’re breastfeeding, squirt some milk onto it. You’ll be amazed at how quickly their skin heals. These things happen.
