Feeling completely awful and can’t take it out of my head… keep googling all kind of horrible staff… please can someone put my mind at ease…
basically I fell asleep with the baby over my tummy…she is 7 weeks old. Next thing I know she is on the floor crying… I picked her up immediately and soothed her and within few seconds she stopped crying. I laid her down and examined all her body and didn’t find any single bruise or scratch. She was smiling and cooing, I fed her and she went back to sleep.

It has been more than 48 hours and she has been ok, a bit cranky but nothing more than average colicky baby…

But now I keep thinking what if… there is some inside injury I couldn’t see… what if it will show up weeks later… what if , what if..

It seemed not necessary to take her to ER that night as she was completely fine but now after spending hours on Google I am terrified…

I think it happens to everyone honestly!
I worked for 999 and the amount of calls for
Dropped the baby
Hit baby on a doorframe
Baby rolled off bed/changing table
Dropped remote on the baby
Dog pushed the baby over

We have all done it at some point. If there was anything wrong you would have seen it by now. Perhaps don’t fall asleep with her on the sofa but I know it’s difficult in those first few weeks when you are so tired. 💐 she will be fine and so will you.

GiltEdges · 12/11/2022 15:23

Honestly OP, it sounds like you were lucky this time, so stop beating yourself up about it. But use this as motivation to stop yourself from falling asleep holding her again at absolutely any cost. I know of a family this happened to who unfortunately weren’t so lucky and it’s changed their life forever.

My uneducated information is honestly not worry. You would have noticed a problem by now, even if an internal injury she would be in pain and/or showing signs of discomfort. My dd dropped my ds down the stairs at a similar age (trying to help me) and he did bump his head but was otherwise fine. At this age their bones are all very soft still, I believe! Oh and once I fainted with my dd on my lap onto the floor… they all seem to have made it into adulthood relatively sound 🤪. Try not to worry, it sounds like you’ve done all the right things xx

Beemommy · 12/11/2022 15:29

@GiltEdges i am definitely never doing that again! I was thinking it is kind of miracle that nothing happened to her … but then I started doubting myself.

does anyone know if it is possible to have a brain injury without even a bump on the head??

The problem is that I don’t even remember which position she was on the floor… I think she was on her tummy but everything was so blurry as I was in shock and still half asleep when I picked her up..

@Errolwasahero
Did you you do any kind of exam or brain scan to see if it wasn’t internally damaged?

OP posts:
Beemommy · 12/11/2022 15:31

I read the brain can bleed from inside and it won’t show until few days or even weeks after… is it true??

I dropped my massive iPhone on my baby's head the day after I brought him home. He didn't flinch. I however spent the day crying thinking 1) he was desperately injured, possibly even brain damaged 2) he was going to be taken away from me because clearly I was an unfit mother 3) that he would remember and be traumatised by the experience

he's fine. He's nearly 3 now and has a very sturdy head it seems judging by how boisterous he is.

But I clearly remember the abject horror and frantic googling, absolutely sick to my stomach feeling I had so I completely understand. It sounds like she's fine, but if you're worried take her to the GP or call 111, however it doesn't sound like you need to. Do you have carpet? was it a high bed?

Beemommy · 12/11/2022 15:43

@Itstheimplication thats exactly what is going on my head!!
the bed is not high at all but the floor is ceramic tiles…
I think if she was hurt she wouldn’t stop crying immediately?

there is not a mother alive who hasn't done this. my daughter did it a few months ago as she fell asleep feeding and her son rolled off the bed. She rang me sobbing in the middle of the night and I rushed round but baby was fine.
I know if makes you feel like the worlds worst parent but these things happen so try to calm down and stop worrying x

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 12/11/2022 15:57

I think the relevant info here is that the floor is tiled. Any damage will completely depend how far and how she fell, and you don't know if she landed head first or not. She's almost certainly totally fine (we've all done it!) but you may want to call 111 to see if they want you to get her checked just in case.

WinterLobelia · 12/11/2022 15:59

i dropped mine out of the moses basket and the next day hit his head on the door jam. He was about - maybe 3 weeks old?

I posted about it at the time. I posted hysterically in the early hours about dropping him out of the moses basket.

He was fine.

DH slept through my screams and DS's. Hmm

HimalayaSalts · 12/11/2022 16:00

When this happens most of the time baby is fine but the guilt is just overwhelming, so I decided to put the mattress on the floor, with all the precautions I took I still managed to bump dd's head into the doorframe once. Also as a ftm who was googling everything giving myself sleepless nights!! On top of the original lack of sleep that comes with new baby, I made a decision not to google anything about something that has already happened, only google to learn about things etc not about something I cannot undo

It’s natural to worry Flowers

But with a tiled floor and to put your mind at ease, I would call 111 and tell them what happened. No one will think you are wasting their time.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 12/11/2022 16:02

Tiled floors can be tricky through- a friend's 3 month olds sustained a fractured skull rolling off a swimming pool changing room low bench onto the tiled floor- he was still fine, but just a word of caution about tiles. They don't give like wood or carpet.

WhyOY · 12/11/2022 16:02

It's very very hard but if you are feeling tired so you might fall asleep don't stay in bed with the baby, put them in their cot. It's so hard though I know.

I called my GP in an absolute panic when my baby rolled off the changing mat on the bed onto the floor. They were fine. If the baby doesn't seem themselves or you're worried give 111 a call they can ask you questions and hopefully put your mind at ease

Yes I'd do this if its on to a hard floor.

slowquickstep · 12/11/2022 16:10

Oh bless, you must be so worried but as the little one is ok a few days later, i am sure she will be ok. We have all done it.

Beemommy · 12/11/2022 16:59

@InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream
I assumed if she would fell head first there would be at least a red spot or a bruise… but trust me for the last two days I studied every single inch of her head and there is nothing.

Unfortunately I am not in UK so we don’t have that kind of medical helpline…it is either Google or driving to emergency room 😬

Beemommy · 12/11/2022 17:01

@WhyOY
She is a baby so it’s hard to tell she is usual self or not… and I am being extra paranoid so every time she cries I think there must be something wrong or it it’s just tummy troubles…

OP posts:
Beemommy · 12/11/2022 17:04

I believe they also get a growth spurt around this time so they might not actually be usual selves…

Itstheimplication · 12/11/2022 17:09

With the tiles I think I would get her checked just so you know for sure even though I am sure she’s okay. Just to put your mind at rest otherwise every little squeak will make you think something is wrong

Yes might be worth it OP otherwise you'll worry x

My DGS who was very premature, just home from hospital, was dropped on his head on to a hard tiled floor. Ambulance service said to feed him and if he took it happily and kept it down, not to worry. He did take his feed and kept it down despite a big bruise on his head. No ambulance came as he was fine according to them. In fact he was.

Beemommy · 12/11/2022 17:35

Wow…. @Novemberhater must be such a shock… but you cheered me up a bit 😊
