I dropped my baby….!!!!

Feeling completely awful and can’t take it out of my head… keep googling all kind of horrible staff… please can someone put my mind at ease…
basically I fell asleep with the baby over my tummy…she is 7 weeks old. Next thing I know she is on the floor crying… I picked her up immediately and soothed her and within few seconds she stopped crying. I laid her down and examined all her body and didn’t find any single bruise or scratch. She was smiling and cooing, I fed her and she went back to sleep.

It has been more than 48 hours and she has been ok, a bit cranky but nothing more than average colicky baby…

But now I keep thinking what if… there is some inside injury I couldn’t see… what if it will show up weeks later… what if , what if..

It seemed not necessary to take her to ER that night as she was completely fine but now after spending hours on Google I am terrified…

Wow…. @Novemberhater must be such a shock… but you cheered me up a bit 😊

It was as awful. I thought he'd be dead, but he was completely fine. Just shows that their bones are softer than ours.

surreygirl1987 · 12/11/2022 17:38

Ah we've all been there. Firstly, make sure you don't fall asleep with your baby on you again (loads of us have, including me!) as it is so risky. Secondly, that sort of thing has happened to me a few times overall with my two children (I'm cringing just writing that - feel so guilty!) and I know how awful you feel. They didn't come to any harm, but it is so terrifying. If you're still freaking out, you could call 111 just for reassurance. Try not to worry though- if she's awake and alert, odds are she's absolutely fine.

@InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream
I assumed if she would fell head first there would be at least a red spot or a bruise… but trust me for the last two days I studied every single inch of her head and there is nothing.

Unfortunately I am not in UK so we don’t have that kind of medical helpline…it is either Google or driving to emergency room 😬

Well, I'm sure the odds are there's nothing to worry about. BUT, the fact you are posting two days later suggests you are going to keep worrying. Is she crying or vomiting any more than usual do you think? If you are going to keep worrying it might be worth just taking her to A and E. They'll probably look in her eyes and tell you she's fine Smile

I fell down the stairs holding mine once, was holding him on my hip, and slipped. I thought I had fell on him, or knocked his head on the bannister or something, but he was on my stomach so I must have swung him round instinctively, but I don’t remember. He was crying but I think it was just the shock and the loud bang. I cried for hours!!

My DGS who was very premature, just home from hospital, was dropped on his head on to a hard tiled floor. Ambulance service said to feed him and if he took it happily and kept it down, not to worry. He did take his feed and kept it down despite a big bruise on his head. No ambulance came as he was fine according to them. In fact he was.

I think this advice will have depended where the bruising was- if it was forehead for example then that is a tough place on the skull and unlikely to have done much damage. OP doesn't know how her baby landed on the tiles.

Ingrainedagainstthegrain · 12/11/2022 18:01

I don't think you have anything to worry about. The risk in falling asleep with baby is accidentally smothering them or them getting wedged. They're able to handle a little tumble and you would know if they weren't. They're feeding, weeing and not screaming, floppy or overly sleepy as you would have mentioned it.

Kay1111 · 12/11/2022 18:17

The likelihood is the baby will 100% be fine, like other posters have said, these things happen.

If you’re still concerned you could call your GP (they should have an out of hours number), 111 or your health visitor and ask their opinion, rather than just go with what strangers on the internet say (which isn’t meant to make you feel like shit, but you’ve probably got no one who’s medically trained offering their advise).

Im sure all is well, perhaps just call someone to put your mind at rest.

Jules912 · 12/11/2022 18:27

Most likely if there was anything to worry about you would've seen it by now. As others have said the main risk of falling asleep with the baby is you rolling onto them, or them getting wedged somewhere. Saying that there are ways to co-sleep safely. Even if that's not for you may be worth looking them up in case you fall asleep feeding again.

PortiasBiscuit · 12/11/2022 18:30

Everybody drops their baby.. the first time my friend realised her son could roll over is when she heard him rolling down the stairs. Babies are built to bounce, honestly!

Errolwasahero · 12/11/2022 19:57

Sorry about the delay in responding; no official checks but just kept a good eye on him like others have said, his eating and alertness. Try not to worry hit go and get him checked if you’re finding it difficult not to worry x

tinyorchid · 12/11/2022 20:01

We've all been ther OP
I never fell asleep but I put my baby on the bed thinking she wouldn't move and she did -she fell off!! Told DH and swore it wouldn't happen again then he did it a few weeks later! She was fine both times luckily but s huge shock. Don't beat yourself up over it - just take measures to make sure it doesn't happen again. Honestly, we've all been there. Hugs to you both ❤️

Omg and lol at once, big hugs ❤️

Flopsy145 · 12/11/2022 20:14

My baby rolled off the changing mat (sofa height) head first landing on her side. Well actually the changing mat fell and she had her first experience of a slide 😅 I too was riddled with guilt and anxiety for weeks!! All was fine though, she's now 18 months and falls over hourly 😂

Flopsy145 · 12/11/2022 20:15

She also fell down the stairs at 1 year old. Again head first. I caught her mid air as I was at the bottom. So honestly these things do happen!! You'll laugh about soon I promise

TheSausageKingofChicago · 12/11/2022 20:17

My baby fell from the sofa while I was getting ready to take him to baby clinic to be weighed. The HV said ‘if he cried straight away that’s a good sign’, had a look at him and didn’t seem to think he needed to go to A&E.

Aposterhasnoname · 12/11/2022 20:19

We’ve all done it. I dropped my baby head first, onto a tiled floor. Just last week that same baby rang me, hysterical, because she’d dropped her baby onto the sofa.

Suzi888 · 12/11/2022 20:22

We dropped baby DD in a bedside drawer, she rolled off our bed in to a drawer I had left open. Nasty nose bleed.. Thought we had broken it, totally traumatised- cue mass panic and A&E. All was fine (thank goodness). We were both absolutely devastated.
If you are worried go to the emergency room, put your mind at rest.

Baaaaaa · 12/11/2022 20:43

It was an accident. Please don't cut yourself up about it.

Beemommy · 12/11/2022 22:49

@Kay1111 i am already feeling like shit so you won’t add to that 😂 There is always a chance that there are some doctors between this bunch of strangers on the internet or even if not - mothers like me who went through the same experience and can share how it turned out for them.

@InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream
So if mine had zero bruising then my chances are that baby is well … that’s what I figure?
plus I am pretty sure she was on her tummy when I picked her up…

babynoname22 · 12/11/2022 22:55

I think I would take her to get checked out. She's so little and tiled floors.

A horrid wake up call must have been very frightening but you need to try and do everything you can to not fall asleep on sofa with baby. It could have been so much worse. You were 'lucky'

Hope she and your are ok.

ladydimitrescu · 12/11/2022 23:07

Please get checked just Incase, tiled floor is a bit of a worry.

EarringsandLipstick · 12/11/2022 23:12

I'm really amazed at the number of posters trivialising this.

In the case of the OP, this should have been checked out. Falling onto a hard surface is certainly worthy of being checked.

I've 3 DC, and my share of accidents, for sure. But the 'falling head first on a hard surface', never and if I had I would have got them checked out.

I'm not saying this to blame the OP at all, but it's important to be sure, and then to make sure that you never fall asleep with them in this position again.

thaegumathteth · 12/11/2022 23:17

OP - it does happen to us all and it's an accident and nobody is to blame BUT the fact it was on a tiled floor would make me get the baby checked tbh. Even now.

Incidentally, I was told by an A&E doctor that often no bump (or worse, a dip) is much more dangerous than if there is a massive bump. (I was told this because Dd frequently tried to defy gravity when she was a toddler!)

I'm not saying this to scare you and I think there'd be other signs like bruising, lethargy etc but you've said yourself she's so little that it's tough to tell if she's her normal self. Please get her checked, I do think she'll be fine but personally I wouldn't take the risk.

Don't beat yourself up though, I've done it with both of mine!

Alopeciabop · 12/11/2022 23:20

I did this. My baby is now four and I’m still not over it.
