Issues with in laws over kissing our baby, am I over reacting?

I’m having issues with my Husband & my in-laws at the moment regarding our 5 month old Daughter. I have asked since she was born that nobody please kiss her - they are absolutely welcome to love all over her with cuddles etc but just please no kissing. This obviously includes my family who have quietly grumbled about it but have respected my wishes

My Husband has also agreed with it… up until she got to 12 weeks old. Since then it has become quite the issue

The problem comes with his side of the family, who seem almost hell bent on planting their lips on her whenever they can & whenever my back is turned. They have loudly brought it up in the past that they don’t agree with the ‘no kissing rule’ & my Husband hasn’t particularly stood up for it, leaving me to be the bad guy. The horrible daughter in law, which i try so hard not to be!

The whole situation thoroughly upsets me - i’ve seen many stories where kissing a baby has passed on nasties from the adult, I barely even kiss her myself! Her health is my priority. And the fact that I’m receiving no support on it…. Am I over reacting? Is 5 months now old enough for other people to start kissing her?

I’m just so fed up & overwhelmed with the disagreements over it. Should I stick to my guns or am I being silly because she’s old enough now, which my Husband thinks!

Thank you x

Her health includes mental health. It is lovely for children to be kissed by the people who love them.

And yes, She’ll soon be eating dirt/ cat food/ mystery items from god knows where…

Time to relax a bit!

Yes my aunt kissing me did so much for my mental health. 66 years of painful and disfiguring cold sores has done so much damage to it.

So sorry to hear that. She shouldn't have kissed you knowing she had cold sores.

She followed the view of if you haven't got an outbreak and no prodrome then you can't pass it on. Rubbish as you can shed the virus with no active outbreak or prodrome. The real issue is you can spread it even if you've never had an outbreak, all that means is your immune system deals with it really well but you can still be shedding virus. It is never safe to kiss a baby (or child) on the lips, close to the lips, near the eyes or on any broken skin as the virus gets access that way and then you have it for life.

Am I being out of order for no wanting anyone bar myself and hubby to kiss my 5 month old on the lips? I am having a hard time with his parents as obviously that’s their grandchild but I don’t want to say anything to upset them.

I don’t know if I have some sort of post partum anxiety as the thought of our niece kissing his lips freaks me out totally. It’s got to the point where I actively avoid going places if I know my baby will be kissed on the lips.

Also the thought of baby groups freaks me out, I always wanted to attend when pregnant but since having my baby germs have become my worse nightmare. He was very poorly when he was a newborn which makes me believe why I am how I am. Do I need to go to the doctors for help? If so what would they give me?
am I being OTT?

Thank you

i agree with you people can show affection without needing to kiss the baby. What is the obsession?
ive said parents only till shes six months but people can play, read with her and cuddle. I have caught my mother in law twice disrespecting this and my father in law has broken this boundary. Its about respecting other people's wishes regardless if they agree or not.
