Hi guys
my son is 5 days old and absolutely gorgeous however he just doesn’t settle at all during the night
I’ve been awake since I had him! he fusses and cries if I even attempt to put him in his basket
I’ve had literally no sleep apart from a hour here and there and I’m at wits end that I’m doing something wrong :(
ive tried everything to get him to settle but he’s just not having it

any advice anyone?

@beststepforward babies don’t start to produce the hormones that allow them to differentiate between day and night until
around 12 weeks, so while it’s definitely good to get them day light during the day, they don’t have the ability to form a circadian rhythm for a while yet. I wouldn’t wake a baby who’d reached birth weight

Aww it's hard but normal. 5 days old I'd let grandparents help and forget having a shower or housework just sleep!
Definitely not doing anything wrong.

Interesting. I found both my babies switched the day and night around by 6 weeks. Feeding them frequently during the day meant they naturally started to lengthen the sleep at nights

I did similar @beststepforward, I used to try and feed more frequently in the day to try and shove any longer sleep stretches into the night-time. It worked ok for me. Even if they don't have circadian rhythm they do tend to have the odd slightly longer stretch of sleep and I used to want to be asleep too when it happened!

@grumpytoddler1 yes it makes sense doesn't it to try and help them move in that direction

Day 5 i would have thought your milk is only just coming in? If it is pajnful the latch is wrong, get yiurself aome nipple shields anf lasinoh nipple cream to give your nipples a chance to heal.

Echo what others have said if you keep doing bottles your supply will struggle to increase, your baby needs to be feeding from your colustrum to signal demand for more milk next day.
