Unexplained marks on baby

Hi mamas my 5 month old son has some weird looking marks on his legs and stomach.
first noticed on Sunday but looked very small so not really alarmed and we were catching a flight back home so didn’t really think much of it.
However they have not gotten worse. Much bigger and look sore, although there are scabs so maybe that’s a good sign??
I posted on other app and user said looks like staph infection. Which is apparently contagious and potentially quite dangerous.

any nurses or doctors here that know what it could be? have appointment with GP booked but not till tomorrow morning.

OP posts:

I would take him to a pharmecy

LIZS · 17/08/2022 12:43

Definitely not chicken pox. Look like burst blisters or burns. Has he been in a tight car seat or buggy harness? Try the pharmacy they can recommend creams or suggest where to go for an appointment with hcp. Do you have a nurse practitioner at gp surgery?

Not really sure what to do as he does seem fine within himself. GP appointment tomorrow is on the phone so I’m not sure how helpful that will be.

My ds's GP appointment was also on the phone, and the GP sent us a link to upload photos.

Personally, from my experience with my ds and that fact that you say your baby is otherwise well in himself, I would be happy to wait for the appointment tomorrow. But he is a little baby. If you are worried then ignore 111 and go to A&E. They never refuse to see a little baby, because the tinies can go downhill so quickly.

A&E? No wonder the wait times are as long as they are! Pharmacy or GP first (Call GP back and say its urgent), or GP out of hours. . I agree that it needs to be seen - but you will be waiting for hours in A&E to be seen which won’t be great for a 5 month old baby. Minor injuries would be better if you can get there, you will be seen quicker.

Panickingnow · 17/08/2022 12:44

Looks like spider bite. Someone posted on my fb local group and the had a very similar.
in the end it was spider bites.

saltwaterandsuncream · 17/08/2022 12:59

My son has had chickenpox twice, once at 5 months old. This is not chickenpox.

summerlovinvibes · 17/08/2022 13:09

Medical professional here. That's definitely not chicken pox, and I agree with PPs that it looks like a staph infection which can get quite a bit worse from here / they can get larger and infected. When you speak to GP tomorrow insist on a F2F, and again expect awkward questions. Keep them clean and dry for now, don't cover them up and also keep clothes off if possible to avoid rubbing.

lemmein · 17/08/2022 13:09

A&E? No wonder the wait times are as long as they are!

God, you are so right. The NHS is in a right mess because of worried mums of 5 month old babies 🙄

GPs usually see little ones (under 5) on the same day. Call back and ask to be seen today - bare minimum ask for a link to send the pics to them today.

Watapalava · 17/08/2022 13:15

They look like the marks from over heated poppers and the spacing between fits with the spacing on poppers

are you sure this wasn’t caused by his clothes? Or poppers on something else that’s rested on him? They wouldn’t blister immediately and so would have gone unnoticed

Ducksurprise · 17/08/2022 13:17

I work in the NHS, and I would want someone to physically look at this. A GP appt on the phone isn't good enough

I agree but the failure of the gp doesn't make it and A&E visit. It is neither and accident nor an emergency as the child is well in himself

Luckypoppy · 17/08/2022 13:18

I was about to say they look like popper marks. Were there poppers on his clothes or on his pram that got heated and burnt him?

Again, dangerous advice! You have no idea at all if this is an emergency - a potential infection can overwhelm an otherwise healthy baby quite quickly.

OP, you'll have half the responses telling you to not even contemplate A&E unless his leg falls off, and the other half berating you for not already being at the hospital. You're his mum, go with your gut. I hope whatever it is heals quickly, it looks really sore.

whynotwhatknot · 17/08/2022 13:33

after just reading a thread wherea frail old man wth cancer was waiting for 16 hours for a bed i wouldnt bother with a and e prob be waiting overnight at that rate

bloodyplanes · 17/08/2022 13:41

They look like infected bites from an insect or spider. You definitely need to get them checked by a hcp.

MrsR87 · 17/08/2022 13:54

I am not a medical expert but they do not look like chicken pox to me!

I would certainly want that checking over by a medical professional.

Hellospring22 · 17/08/2022 14:12

I’d agree that they need checking today especially as he’s so young. I’d push for a doctors appointment or call 111 back and push to be seen. They are able to make a referral to your GP for an appointment, even if your GP are fully booked. If not they should be able to arrange for him to be seen elsewhere. It’s not a chicken pox rash / blister.

It isn't dangerous advice.

Baby needs to be seen by a doctor, doctor should have appointments for a baby. It is not A&E because the parent doesn't want to drive to minor injuries. She has rung 111 that also said not A&E.

Seriously imagine the wait and what A&E will say when you turn up to A&E and say my baby is perfectly well with no temp and well in themselves but they have this skin infection.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/08/2022 14:25

I had chicken pox as an adult, they don’t look like that.

Derbee · 17/08/2022 14:35

I would call the GP and ask to be seen earlier.

I would also take your baby to a pharmacist for th to look at. It will be MUCH quicker than A&E and a decent pharmacist will be able to advise next steps.

Derbee · 17/08/2022 14:37

I’d also be cautious, and assume it’s contagious as it looks like impetigo from your photos.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 17/08/2022 14:38

Insect bites. They esp mosquito, do this on me. Bite, blister, head comes off, looks like that.

mistopheles · 17/08/2022 14:44

I think this is possibly scalded skin syndrome. Very rare. My DS had it and the first sign I spotted was just like this. I called it a cigarette burn to the OOH doctor I had taken my DS to. We were sent straight to paediatrics and he was admitted. It was caused by a staphylococcus infection.

xalo · 17/08/2022 14:48

Lots of people in Spain have reported mosquito bites like those this year. Initial blistering.

mintich · 17/08/2022 14:50

Reminds me of when I had impetigo. Regardless, the baby needs to be seen
