Unexplained marks on baby

Firsttimemama08 · 17/08/2022 09:44

Hi mamas my 5 month old son has some weird looking marks on his legs and stomach.
first noticed on Sunday but looked very small so not really alarmed and we were catching a flight back home so didn’t really think much of it.
However they have not gotten worse. Much bigger and look sore, although there are scabs so maybe that’s a good sign??
I posted on other app and user said looks like staph infection. Which is apparently contagious and potentially quite dangerous.

any nurses or doctors here that know what it could be? have appointment with GP booked but not till tomorrow morning.

Ring 111, or pharmacy or emergency appointment at docs or urgent care. It isn't A&E regardless of being five months old, not least because you will wait for hours.

That's right a&e is there for things that look sore. 🙄 You'd be as well to nip into the pharmacy and it would probably be a whole lot quicker for you.

Well yes she does have every right to go to A&E with a 5 month old baby who can't communicate what they're feeling.

Also, most pharmacists won't actually give you advice on under 2 years old with things like this.

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 17/08/2022 12:07

Id put money on that being impetigo tbh.

rang 111 they said not to go A&E, and believe it’s chicken pox based on my description. Couldn’t show them the photos tho. I would go pharmacy but I thought they couldn’t prescribe stuff for babies?

That is not chicken pox!

Firsttimemama08 · 17/08/2022 12:13

Not really sure what to do as he does seem fine within himself. GP appointment tomorrow is on the phone so I’m not sure how helpful that will be.

What is your issue with driving to a pharmacy first then onto minor injuries if they can't help you? A pharmacist has given me advice before but I suspect they will suggest a doctor look at it. Just get ready and go.

vroom321 · 17/08/2022 12:14

The nhs is fu**ed. There are way too many people in the UK to cope. People are becoming seriously ill/ dying when they could just be seen and prescribed antibiotics/ treatment!!!

ReadtheFT · 17/08/2022 12:15

Definitely not chickenpox, chickenpox blisters fry and gets scabs, they dont pop

TheCutter · 17/08/2022 12:16

I have no medical experience, op but that certainly doesn't look like chicken pox. I'd just take him to get checked.

On the basis of his age I'd be going to a&e regardless. They can't diagnose chickenpox without seeing. I'm quite surprised they were so relaxed about it tbh.

Pharmacy are not equipped to deal with questions like this. A&E is far more appropriate.

lemmein · 17/08/2022 12:18

I'd take him to a&e, don't let others put you off! Some people on here take it upon themselves to be gatekeepers for the NHS, they are downright dangerous and should be deleted really. As if a pharmacist is going to prescribe anything for a 5 month old with unexplained marks like that - ridiculous people.

(As an aside - arghhh your baby's thighs. Why are baby's thighs just so unbelievably cute? 😍)

Basilthymerosemary · 17/08/2022 12:19

Take him straight to a and e. Better safe than sorry and doctors would rather check over than ignore especially as it's a baby. X

findingsomeone · 17/08/2022 12:21

OP please do go to A&E. I work in the NHS, and I would want someone to physically look at this. A GP appt on the phone isn't good enough. Please don't feel you're making a big deal out of it. If you feel silly at A&E say you've got a friend who works as a practice nurse that you asked about it casually and she said go to A&E.

Not saying this to scare because I imagine it's something not especially sinister, but I would want an experienced clinician to have all the information to decide and without seeing you in person they can't.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 17/08/2022 12:21

Yeah, that’s not chicken pox. Either walk in clinic if you have one or A&E. looks really sore whatever it is.

SheWoreYellow · 17/08/2022 12:21

If you do decide to wait till tomorrow, phone the surgery and ask how you send photos through for in advance of the appt.

Clymene · 17/08/2022 12:23

That is not chicken pox. Please go to A&E

happygertie · 17/08/2022 12:25

Bloody hell! All the posts re cigarette burnsHmm
It's unlikely that the poster would post here if they had caused them or suspected another person had.
You have been on holiday so likely infected bites or a skin infection?
I'm sure your GP will see you same day with it being a baby if not nearest walk in centre will be fine. If they have concerns they'll advise accordingly re A&E.

sarahc336 · 17/08/2022 12:27

Defo not chicken pox op xx

LunaAndHerMoonDragons · 17/08/2022 12:30

Not chicken pox. How did you describe them to 111? As a description I'd say they look like small ulcers, they look raw. My DS gets infected ezcema which can look raw like that and keep spreading, last time needed a prescription for topical steroids to treat. When they were babies I always errd on the side of caution. If you feel you don't need A&E then I'd be looking to see if you can find an email for your GP practice, usually a reception one and email picks and ask them to be passed on to the GP before your appointment or asking for it to be changed to a video appointment. Things like this really aren't diagnosable over the phone.

FawnDrench · 17/08/2022 12:31

Why haven't you taken him to hospital like you said you would nearly 3 hours ago?

Stop fannying about and wasting time with 111.
He needs to be SEEN - I just can't understand why you're not doing something about this.

CaptaNoctem · 17/08/2022 12:32

Was he wearing something with metal poppers where the marks are? If it's hot that they can heat up rapidly in the sun.

DS once got a burn this way when he was a baby. I felt awful.

Echobelly · 17/08/2022 12:34

Some friends had something similar on their toddler and ended up having awkward questions asked because it looked like cigarette burns - turned out it was some sort of allergic reaction, IIRC.

Dobbysgotthesocks · 17/08/2022 12:38

@Firsttimemama08 you could try ringing the GP and seeing if they have a way of accepting photos. Most do now.

Do you have a walk in centre near you? Or a minor injuries unit?
