Unexplained marks on baby

Firsttimemama08 · 17/08/2022 09:44

Hi mamas my 5 month old son has some weird looking marks on his legs and stomach.
first noticed on Sunday but looked very small so not really alarmed and we were catching a flight back home so didn’t really think much of it.
However they have not gotten worse. Much bigger and look sore, although there are scabs so maybe that’s a good sign??
I posted on other app and user said looks like staph infection. Which is apparently contagious and potentially quite dangerous.

any nurses or doctors here that know what it could be? have appointment with GP booked but not till tomorrow morning.

If you Google staph infection on legs it comes up with similar images - boils and spots like this are frequently a sign so I’d get him seen

DickeryDock · 17/08/2022 10:19

Scalded skin syndrome? My son had it and the skin comes away and looks burnt. He had to go on strong antibiotics to clear it.

Bit of a leap to jump to cigarette burns

I don't think so. I'm of the generation when everyone smoked and cigarette burns weren't that unusual. That's what they looked like.

I suppose they could be infected insect bites though.

Re insect bites- I don’t think so. I think I would’ve noticed the bite before it looking like that. Where we stayed had lots of mosquito nets, so none of us really got bitten. When they first appeared they did not look like mosquito bites at all. They looked like little blisters, which have now popped.

They are not going to diagnosed on Mumsnet. I would be taking my baby to see a medical professional incase they need to be treated. Doesn't matter how far away that is, I would be taking them to minor injuries straight away. No amount of replies on a forum would reassure me otherwise

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/08/2022 10:33

Go where ever you can be seen quickly - whether that’s GP or A and E. He sounds fine right now but infection can set in v quickly

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 17/08/2022 10:33

Looks like Impetigo. When my DC had it the GP's first thought was cigarette burn. I took my DC to the pharmacy and they gave us some fucidin cream immediately. The GP later prescribed antibiotics. It is highly contagious so don't touch.

Soak the scabs off in the bath before applying cream. Use cotton wool to apply each bit of cream to ensure you don't contaminate the tube.

Flittingaboutagain · 17/08/2022 10:33

Some infections eat away at the flesh and are very nasty. If you have means of travel, then yes to go minor injuries no matter how far away.

BackOnTheBandWagon · 17/08/2022 10:38

I had something that looked like that in my 20s - started out like blisters that got bigger and bigger then popped and scabbed. Pretty sure it was impetigo, but get your little one to GP / some kind of medical facility ASAP. You can't be too careful really and want to make sure they don't get infected

Eixample · 17/08/2022 10:41

It’s almost certainly impetigo and if it is it won’t go away without antibiotics. As you have it in two different locations, oral antibiotics are usually necessary.

Msloverlover · 17/08/2022 10:42

This looks exactly like impetigo looks on my daughter. Nothing to panic about. Cream gets rid of it fairly quickly.

Eixample · 17/08/2022 10:43

Were you in Spain? Huge epidemic of impetigo here at the moment.

Firsttimemama08 · 17/08/2022 10:44

@LondonLovie Agreed. I am gonna take him hospital as that’s the only way my mind can be at ease. Fuck waiting till tomorrow. Also, I didn’t post for a diagnosis, more so for suggestions and so I could do research.

@Firsttimemama08 I do understand, problem is posters say 'cigarette burns, bites, eczema' and it doesn't help ease your mind. Pop to see medical professionals and they can have a good look, check your baby isn't in any discomfort @ advise about healing the skin. Good luck

Eixample · 17/08/2022 10:51

You could try a pharmacy first, you will have a long wait in A&E otherwise

An allergic reaction to bites can start as little blisters which grow.

I'm also wondering if they could have been caused by him leaning against something that had got hot in the sun - like a metal fastener on his buggy straps.

Florin · 17/08/2022 11:07

It looks very like Impetigo, I had it as a child. Keep washing you hands incase it is so infectious I gave it to my sister and Dad.

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 17/08/2022 11:15

It's not exactly an a&e job though is it. The surrounding area isn't red, your baby seems otherwise OK in themselves and you've got an appointment tomorrow, what's the panic.

Sound exactly like what my teen ds had recently. What I thought was a zit turned into a spreading scabby patch. GP said skin infection and prescribed fucidin cream IIRC. Took about 10 days to heal up completely.

It wasn't itchy or sore, so ds wasn't tempted to touch it, but he said he could feel the skin tingling around it and then the scab would spread into the tingling area. It did grow scarily fast. Good you seeing the dr tomorrow. Meanwhile cover it and be really pedantic with your hand hygiene and with washing your baby's clothes.

twentySixx · 17/08/2022 11:23

Good luck OP I think you’re right to go to hospital as they look sore hopefully they can diagnose and prescribe something to help

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 17/08/2022 11:28

That's right a&e is there for things that look sore. 🙄 You'd be as well to nip into the pharmacy and it would probably be a whole lot quicker for you.

Baby is 5 months old.
You dint treat something strange and looking sore the same way in a baby that age and a child (or an adult)..

@Firsttimemama08 I agree with A&E. It can be anything and you really to have it checked up. Babies can go downhill very quickly. You need to be sure it’s not an infectious disease (whatever that disease is)

Oblomov22 · 17/08/2022 11:38

I have no idea what it is. Please do yourself a big big favour and at least take him to A&E or minor injuries or phone the GP. Do something. I don't know what your GP surgery is like but if I try and make an appointment I can attach images and then from records point of view you can at least show that you've done everything you could of.

Incase these do later turn out to be cigarette burns, and someone questions why you didn't do anything. Have you a HV? Could you message her? Send the photos to her? Then at least you've covered yourself from blame.

This is a 5 month old baby fgs!!! With a potential skin infection that looks incredibly sore - it’s not a 12 year old with a paper cut ! OP is right to go to a and e
