I am writing an Essay at the moment;
The title is:
How important are communication skills in modern nursing?

Well, do I actually need to put that question into the actual introduction?

My introduction, as it is right now is as follows:

Communication is a major part of everyday life and it is something that people do in some way or another almost constantly. This essay will define the different components of communication and then explore the effect of difficulties in verbal communication skills. Furthermore a closer look will be taken at possible issues and their impact on non-verbal communication. Then different communication approaches within nursing will be identified and in addition to that their impact on care and patient welfare will be examined. Before coming to a conclusion the influence of task-centred communication and the effect on the perception of the nursing profession will be considered.

Sounds fab (can you write my assignment too)

But I'm not very good at it all - so take everyone elses advise first

3andnomore · 19/01/2008 10:43

lol Katy..this essay has been driving me mad enough this week...had it all done and then called Tutor and suddenly felt all was wrong and started all over again...

Just re-read the intro, and think that I alter the final sentence and leave the "and the effect" out:
so the final sentence will be:

Before coming to a conclusion the influence of task-centred communication on the perception of the nursing profession will be considered.

Oh - would it not be better to check with the tutor to see if the first essay was OK? Or could you just wiggle it

Is there someone on here that could read your first draft through (it would need to be someone in Nursing tho' I guess)

BBBee · 19/01/2008 10:50

is good and clearly 'signposts' your essay. There are a couple of things I would jig around but is more a matter of style than correction.

It is really good - do you want a 'critical friend' viewpoint?

3andnomore · 19/01/2008 10:51

I don't have the first draft anymore...I didn't actually change much of the things I put in, I just changed the "lay-out"...because the paragraphs where to long...

I don't have the complete draft anymore anyway!
Thing is the Essay needs to be in on Tuesday, and I did call the tutor this week, but they won't read hte essay until you hand it in, as it is the final essay of this course (a little study skills course at University). The scary thing is that I have to pass the course in order to keep my place for teh OT course I want to do in September...so, no pressure, lol

Communication is a major part of everyday life and it is something that people do in some way or another almost constantly.

DO PEOPLE COMMUNICATE CONSTANTLY? CAN YOU SAY "AND IS VITAL FOR PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO EXPRESS AND UNDERSTAND.

This essay will define the different components of communication and then explore the effect of difficulties in verbal communication skills. Furthermore a closer look will be taken at possible issues and their impact on non-verbal communication.

i WOULD NOT USE 'FUTHERMORE' I WOULD SAY SOMETHING LIKE "THE IMPACT AND ISSUES SURROUNDING NON-VERBAL COMMUNCAITION AND ITS IMPORTANCE WILL THEN BE DISCUSSED."

Then (LOSE THEN) different communication approaches within nursing will be identified and in addition to that (LOSE 'IN ADDITION TO THAT' AND PUT 'AND') their impact on care and patient welfare will be examined.

Before coming to a conclusion the influence of task-centred communication and the effect on the perception of the nursing profession will be considered.

I WOULD BE TEMPTED TO TURN THIS AROUND FOR CLARITY:

THE INFLUNENCE OF TASK-CENTERED COMMUNICATION AND THE EFFECT ON THE PERCEPITION OF THE NURSING PROFESSION WILL BE CONSIDERED. FINALLY, THE ESSAY WILL CONCLUDE BY DRAWING TOGETHER THE ISSUES SURROUNDING COMMUNICATION AND HOW THIS IS OF IMPORTANCE IN THE NURSING PROFESSION.

But this is already very good - these are stylistic changes that I think make it clearer but that is my opinion and an opinion is there to be taken or not as you chose.

best wishes.

BBBee · 19/01/2008 11:20

oh god where have you gone?

KatyMac · 19/01/2008 11:24

I bet she's working on it - that's a great critique (imo) - do you want to come & do mine?

BTW 3andnomore - how long does it have to be

Mine is 1000 words & it's killing me to write that little

3andnomore · 19/01/2008 11:28

2000 words Katy, what is your essay about and it is even more difficult, in a way, to write a shorter essay isn't it!

BBBee thank you for your suggestions ,they are very appreciated
Just been working on my conclusion...i.e. restyling that, lol...

OP posts:
KatyMac · 19/01/2008 11:31

It's a work based assignment and must include
The organisation & my role in it
The situation & why change or improvement is needed
Investigation
Suggestions for change
My role in the change

I could write 1000 words on part one

BBBee · 19/01/2008 11:32

no problem 3andno - as I said is my opinion - take from it what you will.

I am doing a PhD and my tutor spent a long time going over how to and the importance of signposting and you have that down to a fine art.

3andnomore · 19/01/2008 11:44

gosh, that does sound like quite a lot to put into 1000 words...

cheers BBBee

btw. just by my intro, would you think I am missing the point (tutor implied that, and I can't work out why...however, as lovely as the tutor is, we easily have our wires crossed (we obviously do not communicate well, lol)

OP posts:
BBBee · 19/01/2008 11:47

can't see how you would have missed the point as you ar discussing com and nursing.

I suppose you could discuss the relationship to nursting all the way through?

3andnomore · 19/01/2008 11:48

here is the conclusion that I have just worked over:

The impact of good communication vs. poor communication on patients? welfare and the care outcome can not be disregarded. Numerous reasons can make communication more complex highlighting the necessity of excellent communication skills. The fact that nurses will have an increased probability to encounter individuals with communication difficulties has to be considered. Therefore when contemplating all of the above it leads to the conclusion that communication skills are of absolute importance within modern nursing. They are simply essential skills at the heart of high quality nursing care and insufficient communication leads to inadequate care increasing the risk of an undesirable outcome.

OP posts:
3andnomore · 19/01/2008 11:50

hm...I don't think I could find that many words on it, without completely copying any of the articles I read on it.

I did feel it important to look at communciation and how it can be effected...considering that nurses kind off deal with it all the time...iykwim...
hmmm

OP posts:
BBBee · 19/01/2008 11:51

agree - can;t see what your tutor is getting at.

Good conclusion btw

off out now - good luck and I think it reads well so don;t stress

3andnomore · 19/01/2008 12:01

How about this as a first sentence?

Communication is a major part of everyday life and it is something people do intentionally or unintentionally in order to express and understand.

OP posts:
3andnomore · 19/01/2008 12:03

Thanks BBBee

OP posts:
3andnomore · 19/01/2008 12:58

Well, here is the amended version of my introduction:

Communication is a major part of everyday life and it is something people do intentionally or unintentionally in order to express and understand. With the purpose of drawing a conclusion this essay will define the different components of communication and then explore the effect of difficulties in verbal communication skills. The issues surrounding non-verbal communication their impact and consequences will be discussed. Different communication approaches within nursing will be identified and their impact on care and patient welfare will be examined. Finally, the influence of task-centred communication on the perception of the nursing profession will be considered followed by the conclusion.

3andnomore · 19/01/2008 16:41

Well....it is simply crazy and unbelievable how long it takes me to do the reference and bibliography list...sigh....
despite having all the Info at hand...but the change in format really does complicate things, doesn't it, sigh!

KatyMac · 19/01/2008 16:54

Still struggling 3andnomore?

Me too

I now have it written within the parameters but it's too short - bummer

I was so switched on to keeping it short & now it's too short

3andnomore · 19/01/2008 16:54

Exactly 2000 words...wohoo...
