We have a 15mo...really not sure what to do for the best. What are you going to be doing during the peak heat? What's your plan?!

Sorry, posted too soon. I was going to say, stay in and shut the curtains. Then have a glass of wine in the garden in the evening! I'd stay out of the sun even more with a baby.

Staying out of the sun, lots of fans to keep rooms cool...

Shut the curtains indoors. Eat lollies. Paddling pool in the shade.

Paddling pool. Mine are actually still at school! I wouldn't worry, there's a heat wave every year 33 isn't unheard of.

Stay indoors. Windows shut. Curtains shut. Thankfully we have an air con unit. Bought it after a day at 37° when my daughter was a tiny baby. It was horrendous trying to keep her cool.

I'm worried about the night tbh. It's been almost 28C this week upstairs and that's with curtains closed, fans running etc...
I think we're going to camp downstairs day and night...curtains closed...we do have a portable AC unit but within an hour of it being switched off the temp rises super fast again and baby won't be able to sleep with that running!

I don't know why I'm really worried. It's all the media hype I guess. To easily influenced maybe...definitely a Watership Down Bunny unfortunately!

I grew up in a country this hot all the time, I am white british. We were just sensible, the pace of life was slower, we wore sun block all the time, went swimming a lot, stayed out of the sun in the middle of the day and if we did go out we'd sit under the shade of a big tree, a parasol isn't enough.
Make sure everyone drinks water, stay off the alcohol.

Tepid baths, give them lots of bath toys ( colander, empty plastic bottles)

Lie under my fan and moan about it. And when the heat goes away and the rain starts I'll moan about that too.

Keep all the internal doors shut. that way, even if rooms on the south side get hot you will helpfully have some cool rooms.

I have a 4 month old. We’ve booked a ‘staycation’ for 3 days in a hotel with air con.

Neither of us do well with heat and our LO is the same so we thought it best.

We’ve been managing to keep his bedroom at about 23 degrees & will probably put him to bed a bit later.

He’ll be at nursery but they will keep windows and blinds closed, and kids inside from at least 10.30 - 4pm. We might pick him up a bit earlier and let him paddle in the garden.

Don't worry. It will be uncomfortable but likely nothing worse than that. Warnings are going out because people will do daft things like go sunbathing, get drunk or stay out for too long without water and sunscreen.

Stay out of direct sun, wear loose clothing, stay hydrated, keep cool using water or go somewhere air conditioned, near trees and/or water, don't try to do too much in the heat itself and you'll be OK :)

For the house, don't use fans in empty rooms, fans cool people, not rooms. Try to block the sun on the side it's shining in, and keep windows closed when the temperature outside is hotter than inside. As soon as it drops to cooler outside than in, throw all the windows open and try to get some air flow. Then you can use a fan, pointed outwards, to blow some of the hot air out although I don't know if this really works.

I've got an XL dog cooling mat from Costco (£9.99 and it's huge!) in my bed and it's BLISS! Super cold and even better if you slide it under the fitted sheet! ❄️

I haven't tried it myself (yet) but I've heard people are having success with those pet cooling mats.

Windows and doors wide open at night/early morning before it gets hot to get the house as cool as possible, then shut all doors, windows and curtains by about 7.30am. Decamp to somewhere air-conditioned (shopping centre, supermarket) during the hottest part of the day. I've rigged a makeshift gazebo in our garden out of washing lines, clothes props and a king sized sheet and the paddling pool is under that so the children can splash around in the shade. Bottles of water in the freezer so they stay colder longer outside. Fans on at night, damp towel over you to keep you cool. Suncream and hat if going in the sun. It will be OK.

Are you sure the baby won't sleep with it going? Does it sound like white noise?

Hot water bottle in room but with ice water in it better if you can put in front of a fan.

Can you not keep the portable ac unit on in the little ones room? Doubles as white noise

I have put my sheets and duvet covers in the freezer before in hot weather. Works brilliantly.

Bottle of frozen water in front of a fan works too. Just position carefully.

Stay indoors with the curtains closed. Open the windows at night to let cool air in.

We are forecast 39 where I am. Which would make it the hottest ever day in the UK.

We will just splash about in the paddling pool in the shade and eat lots of ice lollies, not too dissimilar to when we are on holiday.

I grew up in a country where summer hits 40 degrees +

With a small baby, I’d stay out of the sun. With my 2 year old, we’ll be slapping the sun block on and heading to paddling pools to keep cool.
