We have a 15mo...really not sure what to do for the best. What are you going to be doing during the peak heat? What's your plan?!

Google the summer of '76 - long and very very hot.

I was 13 - everyone just went about their daily lives as usual except for the hosepipe bans (and stand pipes in some areas where water was really restricted).

I remember the summer of 76! I remember the greenfly invasion! Hot! Hot! Hot! I was 4!

Bought a frame pool, putting it in the shade and filling it up - seriously considering letting DD have the day (or 2) off school (they won't even let them use a fan in their classrooms) and all 3 of us just going to wallow in it all day.

Lie under my fan and moan about it. And when the heat goes away and the rain starts I'll moan about that too.

It's the only way 😆😆

We had a hot spell like this when my eldest was a baby.

I decamped to sainsburys cafe for the day while keeping all curtains closed at home.

Over night he slept in a nappy and light sleeping bag with a fan in his room.

He was fine.

When we had a heatwave about 15 years ago (when DD was little), we just stayed indoors, curtains shut etc. She also had a few extra goes in a tepid bath playing, especially in the evening. I then cool sponged her at bedtime and she was out like a light.
Try not to overthink it, cool (not freezing cold) water will be your friend here. If you get to mid afternoon and you’re too hot, pop to the nearest air conditioned library for an hour. Come home, play in the bath etc. There are no rules about the bath on a roasting hot day.

My FIL goes to auctions and bought 2 air con units for 170 pound, we've used one so far and it works brilliantly. Going to have it on all night with the toddler in our room in a travel cot.
Downstairs though.. Lots of ice lollies but it's the coolest room so we might be ok. We are in a loft flat temporarily as selling our house, it's been 32c in our little ones room on the 28c day so can't imagine how hot it would have been without this aircon unit.

DD always slept fine with the air con unit running. It's just like white noise. It does guzzle electricity though.

Potter around supermarkets-their chillers are going full blast!

It's only going to be really hot for one night, possibly two so I wouldn't worry too much - just make sure your child is well hydrated and for you, stay off the internet and don't get yourself worked up over sensational news stories.

Honestly what? Barring health conditions, what in the world are you actually worried about. Do you never go on holiday to warmer countries in the summer?
Stay inside during peak heat, enjoy playing in the garden/park/beach with paddling pool, sprinkler, water guns in the morning and late afternoon. Have lots of ice lollies. Open all the windows early morning and late evening and close them and curtains during the day. Have a nice cold shower before bed.

If bored at home during the day/still too warm go to the mall/cinema/gym/anywhere with air conditioning during the day.

Quite literally chill out and enjoy the fact there's actually summer weather for once. It'll soon be cold and raining again.

But seriously, I am surprised with the energy crisis, global warming Armageddon and other threads about rising bills how many people have just bought fans and air con units. They are hugely expensive to run and it’s using more plastic and metal.Friends of ours are incredible careful generally about energy, recycling, growing own veg to lower transport emissions etc and are running five fans in their house, despite having a lovely shady garden to sit in.

We live on the Solento, it's been over 35c for months. We don't have Aircon, we don't need it. My tips are: Make the house dark. Have a shower three times a day. Slow right down. Wear a sunhat and sunblock. Eat fruit throughout the day. Put your feet in cold water. Stay out the sun between 11am and 3pm.

What's there to be worried about. You put on a fan. You do the best you can. FFS.

I've just come back from Dubai. It was 48 degrees.

It was fine. I drank plenty, wore suncream and went for a walk every night.

There were plenty of children out and about during the day. In play areas and walking/running about.

I don't understand the panic of this current hot weather.

Open your windows, get some air flow. Stay in the shade. Drink plenty of water. It will be fine

I'm worried about the night tbh. It's been almost 28C this week upstairs and that's with curtains closed, fans running etc...
I think we're going to camp downstairs day and night...curtains closed...we do have a portable AC unit but within an hour of it being switched off the temp rises super fast again and baby won't be able to sleep with that running!

I don't know why I'm really worried. It's all the media hype I guess. To easily influenced maybe...definitely a Watership Down Bunny unfortunately!

You are worried because of all the media hype, so you thought it best to add to it?

FFS it's a few days of hot weather.

Get a couple of those survival blankets they give out to people finishing marathons (buy from outdoor stores). Put them over the outside of south facing windows to reflect the heat away.

After dark open windows to flush heat out of the house

Are you sure the baby won't sleep with it going? Does it sound like white noise

Exactly - my toddlers sleep fine with our AC unit on. We first tried it 2 summers ago when my youngest was a newborn in that lockdown heatwave. A godsend.

Firstly stop panicking. Yes it's going to be hot, but we are designed for it, thousands of years running across the Savannah with no Evian, sun lotion or AC have seen to that. Unless you do something daft you and baby are unlikely to be anything more than a bit uncomfortable.

I’m sat here with a right face on, I live in the UK but it’s freezing, I had a coat on for the school run, sports day on Tuesday was rained off and I had to put the heating on for an hour yesterday! I want nice weather too.

Me and my 14 month old will go swimming at the leisure centre, do a food shop in Tesco, spending lots of time down the freezer aisles 😂 and go to soft play which is air conditioned. Why stay at home sweating when loads of public places have air conditioning

Paddling pool and gazebo if that’s feasible. Good fan for bedroom and nappy only at bedtime (maybe a coolish bath before bed?).

I have a 4 month old. We’ve booked a ‘staycation’ for 3 days in a hotel with air con.

Neither of us do well with heat and our LO is the same so we thought it best.

What a good idea! Wink

We live near the beach in the South East. I was going to stay in with all the windows open and a large fan on, but it's almost too hot even today doing that, so I've ordered a very large parasol to be delivered Sunday.

DH is now going to wfh on Monday & Tuesday so we're going to make a picnic and go on the beach and just sit very near to the sea under the parasol and keep going in the water to cool down.
