We have a 15mo...really not sure what to do for the best. What are you going to be doing during the peak heat? What's your plan?!

Open your loft hatch at night- to allow the heat in your house to rise up past the insulation and out of the roof.
Keep your hair continually wet. Have a cool bath before bed to try and get your core temperature down.
And as plenty of others have said, at the coolest part of the day, close all windows, blinds, and curtains to keep the sun out. Only open up when (if) it is colder outside than inside.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 14/07/2022 22:33

All of the above, also things like still frozen peas and sweetcorn to snack on or frozen grapes/orange slices.

We won't cook anything on hot days, might get a rotisserie chicken from the supermarket but otherwise it will be cold cuts, salad, fruit, will have a melon in the fridge and have big wedges of that to keep cool and hydrated.

I'm worried about the night tbh. It's been almost 28C this week upstairs and that's with curtains closed, fans running etc...
I think we're going to camp downstairs day and night...curtains closed...we do have a portable AC unit but within an hour of it being switched off the temp rises super fast again and baby won't be able to sleep with that running!

I don't know why I'm really worried. It's all the media hype I guess. To easily influenced maybe...definitely a Watership Down Bunny unfortunately!

I don't see much media but it sounds like they've gone into overdrive.

ignore it. Make plans to be in the least hot part of your home and prepare to be bored. But don't panic. I was a baby in the 1976 thing. I don't think my parents panicked at all.

A few years back on a very hot day I sat DGS down in the shade of a tree with a washing up bowl of cold water and a selection of containers. He played quite happily for quite a while.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 14/07/2022 22:57

Mainly keep hold of my grip, will be handing out grips .

Narwhalelife · 14/07/2022 23:00

i will be trying to sleep as I’m working nights Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday - prayers and thoughts welcome

PinkPlantCase · 14/07/2022 23:04

We’ve bought a portable a/c unit and will leave it running overnight in DCs room, we might sleep in there too. It’ll be nice to have a room that’s properly cool.

We’ll also set up a tarp in the garden for the paddling pool to go under. We have 13mo DS and I’ll make some ice lollies that he can have too

Thisbastardcomputer · 14/07/2022 23:09

Calm down, get the toddler in a paddling pool under shade

Pkwio · 14/07/2022 23:12

I've got MS, the heat can really mess me up and causes me all sorts of symptoms. This week it's mostly been affecting my eyes.

I stay as still as possible !

anonymoooose · 14/07/2022 23:18

@PutinSmellsPassItOn 🤣🤣🤣 sounds like a good plan

NewtoHolland · 14/07/2022 23:25

I freeze bottles of water to drink through the day as I love ice cold drinks. If you can afford it, lots of water play, paddling pool, bath together, shower. My bes thing witj my baby so far has been a small inflatable bath which I got on market place. I get in the paddling pool and float her on top in the bath in the shade. So she has the cool feeling of the bottom of the bath boat without getting too cold and wet, and I have the lovely cold water to chill in. Heaven. Until the rest of my children join us 😂. You could do ice crafts too..freeze some plastic toys in a tub of water, tip out and help him to chop away with room temp water, a spoon and salt to rescue the toys :)

StaunchMomma · 14/07/2022 23:38

Staying home, curtains closed, fans on, 2 pack of cooling pillows each so can sleep with one on head and one on feet, no use of oven, cool showers, lots of water.

Twillow · 14/07/2022 23:47

Freeze bottles of water and put them in front of your fans - really works!

Indiana2021 · 14/07/2022 23:54

Come and live in Scotland 😉

Scareofeasttown · 15/07/2022 00:04

Filling a hot water bottle with cold water and freezing it

Germolenequeen · 15/07/2022 00:50

Google the summer of '76 - long and very very hot.

I was 13 - everyone just went about their daily lives as usual except for the hosepipe bans (and stand pipes in some areas where water was really restricted).

HorribleHerstory · 15/07/2022 00:57

Same thing I’ve done this week. Go to work. No air conditioning there. Get sweaty in the car because no air conditioning there. At home. Keep the blinds down in the day and windows shut. Blinds open in the late evening windows open. Sponge the kids down if they moan. Go running later in the evening rather than the middle of the day.

No air conditioner at home. We don’t own a fan unless you count folded paper.

SeaToSki · 15/07/2022 01:54

Put him to bed with a damp towel as a cover. As the dampness evaporates it cools the skin.

MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay · 15/07/2022 06:55

Don't switch off the AC unit. Keep it running all of the time. He will get used to the noise. Second babies have to sleep through all sorts of cacophonies.

I was 13 in 1976 as well. The only thing we did differently was to sleep downstairs

RudsyFarmer · 15/07/2022 07:20

We have air con units so the plan is to stay in and out them on if necessary.

MsTSwift · 15/07/2022 07:21

Babies in hot countries do seem to survive!

constantindigestion · 15/07/2022 07:23

Cover her in a wet towel/sheet during the night if you're concerned. She will be fine as long as you keep her hydrated

Hot water bottle in room but with ice water in it better if you can put in front of a fan.

This is what I was going to suggest. It’s the best idea ever- and cheap to do.

ThePumpkinPatch · 14/07/2022 21:43

I've got an XL dog cooling mat from Costco (£9.99 and it's huge!) in my bed and it's BLISS! Super cold and even better if you slide it under the fitted sheet! ❄️

Genius!
