Nightmares Over Numberjacks

My DC has been talking about Numberjacks for a while after coming out of school, in my confusion I thought it was Numberblocks being referenced and didn't get half of it but made encouraging noises.

We've been struggling with nightmares, I'm up and down 3 or 4 times a night on a bad night. I ask what's wrong and there's a genuine fear we're not there but I can't ever work out what's triggering them during sleep.

Last night, there's a massive scream and DC is crying, I'm in the toilet so DC runs in and closes the door. DC stands against it saying The Numbertaker is going to get them. It's come out that DC has been scared of it for a while and had two nightmares last night of The Numbertaker and Spooky Spoon.

We've tried to rationalise this, much like we've done with every nightmare by saying our brain can make stuff up that seems scary.

We've now shown DC that they are just actors in Numberjacks and shown the cast out of costume, etc. However, what can I do if this is something they'll be watching regularly at school during the day?

I'd never seen it before all of this so I had shock myself and cannot fathom why they're being shown this in reception?!

The Numbertaker is freaky for grownups! He's played by the same actor who was a white walker in Game of Thrones. I have no idea why a school would play it over Numberblocks, which is brilliant. Maybe mention it to them?

Kazoola · 18/06/2022 16:42

Oh no, my little boy was shown this at nursery and came out crying. I thought he meant number blocks too.

Springercleaner · 18/06/2022 17:02

My DS was scared of The Numbertaker. I remember quite clearly even though he's a teen now. Kept wanting to watch it but he was scared.

I know of a little boy who has nightmares about NumberJacks also. I don’t like them.

Toughtimesagain · 18/06/2022 17:05

My 20 year old DS is sat here next to me and agrees that Spooky Spoon and the Numbertaker were terrifying. He was spooked by them as a kid. It’s really creepy. Your poor DS though. I’d have a word with his teacher.

Numberjacks is a weird show. The whole premise of it…just odd. Spooky Spoon and the Numbercatcher are very disconcerting. Who the hell dreamed that one up?

TopBitchoftheWitches · 18/06/2022 17:11

My 18 yr old daughter was scared of the number taker and says she still is.

Holdontowhat · 18/06/2022 17:11

My DS now 12 also had nightmares for a long time about spooky spoon! I didn't realise so many other children found it scary! Definitely mention it to school.

OddBoots · 18/06/2022 17:12

My son is 23 now but he got nightmares for years after watching that show as a smallish child. He had seen it at home though so I could make sure he didn't see it again, it's harder when it is at school.

Workinghardeveryday · 18/06/2022 17:13

My dd16 was terrified of numberjacks when she was little. I always thought it was such a strange weird feeling program tbh

pictish · 18/06/2022 17:15

It was the Puzzler I didn’t like.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 18/06/2022 17:15

God, is that still on? My dc are grown up now but I can remember them being very freaked out by it

WhoWants2Know · 18/06/2022 17:15

Ooh, and the problem blob!

DreamingofItaly2023 · 18/06/2022 17:16

My DS was terrified of numberjacks too so nursery allowed him to opt out. Heavens knows why places still show it when numberblocks is so much better.

Quartz2208 · 18/06/2022 17:17

DD loved the NUmberjacks until I took her to see it (about 11 years ago) as a production in Wimbledon.
The Numbertaker in real life was just too much. She still loved the episode zero to hero

Awrite · 18/06/2022 17:19

YY to Numberjacks being terrifying.

Ask the school not to show it to your son. It is clearly traumatising him. Poor lamb.

dannydyerismydad · 18/06/2022 17:20

It's like Dr Who for kids. Ds loved it but it freaked me out. Especially the numbertaker

ArghhNumberjacks · 18/06/2022 20:47

The thing is, it's not even on anymore! I think it was replaced by Numberblocks which is why I thought that's what it was at school. I'd never heard of it until I googled 'Number taker'.

I just don't know what the school could possibly do?

My DC did mention a specific friend had said they were scared of it too.

I could have written this - my DS has also had nightmares triggered by friggin Numberjacks.

Hyvsvaar · 18/06/2022 20:51

Numberjacks…haven’t heard of that in years is it still being made? My kids hated it ..spooky spoon and other unsettling manic screechy things

and a disembodied zeroooooo

ArghhNumberjacks · 18/06/2022 20:48

Sorry, posted too soon, @Quartz2208 Shock Live?! I'm scared for her.

She was 2 (13 now) and it did scar her for life. In Year 1 her teacher put it on and her reaction meant it was never shown again.

DS had the same teacher and she tried with NUmberjacks and this time it was Spooky Spoon

sashagabadon · 18/06/2022 21:07

Lol! My daughter now 19 was terrified of spooky spoon! She’d run out of the room. She also hated the false teeth in glass scene in The Snowman when the snowman puts them in his own mouth and grinned😁

rainbowninja · 18/06/2022 22:31

Yes! My daughter had a similar reaction when watching numberjacks when she was reception age, I can’t remember but think it was the numbertaker.

She was genuinely terrified. I was worried when I realised they were showing it in reception but suspect this was just prior to us going into the first lockdown so didn’t have to deal with it.

I found the whole show a bit creepy too tbh.

RaaRaaLaLaLa · 18/06/2022 22:37

Numberjacks! Are they wheeling a telly out on a trolley and putting a video on?
