How often do you bath you children?

And how old are they?

Just curious

When I was young i had a bath once a week on a Sunday at school age until I was old enough to shower independently.

My 4 week old has had one proper bath but is wiped down with cotton wool as and when needed

How often are you bathing your kids?

@Easymeasy

Also, if your children get disgusting after one day of not bathing, well, maybe this says something about your family. 😄

PenguinPup · 17/03/2022 13:01

I'm sorry but it's completely over the top to call a parent neglectful for bathing their child once a week. Honestly, get a grip.

Bathing/showering regularly is not bad for the skin. There's a middle ground if you are too lazy/can't afford water/child has skin conditions. Once a week is disgusting and neglectful. Like some one says it's basic parenting.
But also like was also mentioned English people have a reputation/stereotype for not bathing and smelling so I will leave you to it.

Yes it is bad for the skin. Maybe educate yourself before you post your disgusting judgemental comments about someone's parenting.[/quote]
Are you saying bathing or showering more than once a week is bad for your skin?

I think you being a soap Dodger says more about your family than me saying that children should be bathed more than once a week says about mine tbh.

Feedmepancakes · 17/03/2022 13:25

4 and 2, bath every night and hair wash 2-3 times a week. They are particularly muddy kids though!

MrsGHarrison87 · 17/03/2022 13:32

Daily. Hair wash every 3 days or so.

Indoctro · 17/03/2022 14:26

@Easymeasy

Repeated just for your education

Lots of bathing can lead to dry, irritated skin. But also, the skin has natural protective oils, and natural bacteria, that help to keep us healthy and safe — and that can get washed away with daily bathing.
The American Academy of Dermatology set out some easy to follow guidelines for busy parents.
Children aged between six and 11 should bathe at least once or twice a week.

Characterisartion · 17/03/2022 15:41

3 - bath once every 3-4 days, more if mucky; hair washed with shampoo every 2nd or 3rd time (other times we use it as bubble bath and pile it on heads).

If we bathe more often, it triggers eczema - it really isn't a good idea to be bathing young skin so often, the idea of once a week being "neglectful" is bizarre. Confused

As long as a child has fresh, well cleaned clothes, washes hands more often, washes face if mucky from food, and has well trimmed clean fingernails etc.. it is better for children not to have their natural oils and skin protection washed off every day!

JustmeandtheKIDS2 · 17/03/2022 15:46

Twice a week aged 6 and 7.

bobsholi · 17/03/2022 15:57

I bath mine 6 or 7 times a week. We usually miss Friday as that's family game night and we have a late dinner. I work in a school and it's clear some poor kids are only washed once a week if that. Long fingernails with muck underneath them is just grim. We have 2 students that have only just lost the residue from halloween make up!

Hugasauras · 17/03/2022 16:02

DD has one every night as it's just part of bedtime routine and she likes it. It's nice time for her and her dad to spend together too. She doesn't need it for cleanliness though. When I was a young kid it was about once a week and that was fine too.

The distinction should be made clearer between bathing and washing. It’s perfectly possible (and easy) to keep a child clean without bathing them every day. It only takes hand washing and a nail brush to keep nails clean. Nothing to do with baths.

Absolutely - what the fuck are these people doing that mean a full body immersion is needed every day for children who are nowhere near puberty? (Assuming UK and therefore unlikely to be having all over suncream applications and/or getting covered in sand every day.)

aylis · 17/03/2022 17:45

It’s highly unlikely anyone’s kid is suffering untold trauma from being bathed twice weekly instead of every day. Even if someone was to freely admit they can’t be arsed and that they spend 20 minutes watching the news with a packet of jaffa cakes instead, so what? I love a bath and I couldn’t tell you where I sit on the scale of most of least showers in a week in my office. Competitive nonsense over nothing.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 17/03/2022 17:47

It’s not good for babies to be bathed every day and defo not needed at all.

Mine are 3&5 and bathed twice a week, go swimming once so shower after that, and maybe another shower in the week if I think it’s needed

Easymeasy · 17/03/2022 18:17

Like I said it's clearly a culture thing as English people are known to smell and not bathe regularly so it's pretty pointless having this conversation. Anyone who bathes once or twice a week is nasty. Anyone who bathes their children once or twice a week is dirty, lazy and neglectful. I will leave you stinky people who are used to the smell of stank in here together congratulating each other on lack of hygiene.

Where are you from Measy? Just so us stinky English folk can know where all the perfect people come from and look on with admiration.

ldontWanna · 17/03/2022 18:31

This is from a daily washer.

  • First, I’m going to tell you that you might be disappointed with the answer in this section, and second, it’s all dependent on how old you are. You’ll probably be surprised by the second part though. As a child, you shouldn’t actually be washing every day like you might think – unless you are absolutely covered in mud. Between the ages of six and 11, your immune system is still developing and learning to become more resistant, and so you should only be washing once or twice a week. That way, the germs on your body can help the immune system to grow stronger and more resistant for later life. After the age of 12, the official guidelines are dropped, but during puberty, we tend to smell pretty awful most of the time (no one wants to go through that again) and so need to shower more frequently. A lot of the time it is down to personal needs and preference.*

As for smelly Brits...

In the USA, 65% of Americans shower every day, and 21% shower every other day.
In Spain, France, and South Africa, the average number of showers each week is seven, which means that most people are hopping in for a wash once a day. The really clean citizens of the world, however, are the Brazilians, who shower a staggering 12-14 times per week! We’re looking at two showers a day here.
The British and Japanese aren’t quite as neat as the rest of the world with an average of five showers per week, and the Aussies outshine them both with eight.

63% of women and 58% of men in the UK shower daily

76% of women and 71% of men in France shower daily

61% of women and 35% of men in Russia shower daily

30% of Aussie men are happy to go to work each day without a shower (the sweat!?)

99% of Brazilians shower every week

2 teenagers shower every day its definitely needed 2yr old every second day

RobynNora · 17/03/2022 18:49

Have a young toddler and bathe them every day. They get properly smelly if ever we miss a day when travelling. Like today, they ate some fishfingers while doing a spot of ‘heads, shoulders, knees and toes’ which meant putting hands on head and in hair…

Hangingtrousers · 17/03/2022 18:58

I purposely didn't put bath into the bed time routine because who needs that chore every night...
All my 3 kids have baths on a need to bath basis.. sometimes it could be 2 nights in a row then a night off then a bath then 2 nights off. No set bath night. We wash hair after swimming lesson.
Uniform I need to change basis... if its dirty they get a new uniform.

You're way to invested. Get a bit of a grip.

At least the English aren't like you ay. And wherever the fuck you're from.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 17/03/2022 19:47

When my oldest was a baby, she had terrible dry skin, so we were told to stop bathing her every day, and we dropped to twice a week (with a good flannel wash every other day).

Now they are older, my kids choose how often they shower and both generally do a quick 3 minute job most mornings, with a longer shower that includes a hair wash two or three evenings a week. Youngest has a clean shirt every day but her skirt and jumper last all week now she's older and able to stay clean!

I myself only shower and wash hair every other day with bits and pits done with a flannel on the other days, I WFH and don't leave the house much so it bothers no-one but me.

Wowcherarestalkingme · 17/03/2022 19:52

Despite the insults flying about, This thread has actually made me think. We’ve always bathed our two every day since six months but reading some of the links people have posted I think I’ll drop a couple do baths a week. And on those days not allow my youngest soup or yoghurt
