And how old are they?

Just curious

When I was young i had a bath once a week on a Sunday at school age until I was old enough to shower independently.

My 4 week old has had one proper bath but is wiped down with cotton wool as and when needed

How often are you bathing your kids?

All every day and hair washed since birth - one now adult, younger 10 and 9.

All have suffered from eczema and this has been the recommendation plus regular emollient.

So we're talking about children not being washed everyday..but once or twice a week. There's a difference between being washed when needed, but not everyday, and not washing them when needed, where they are wearing filthy clothes, and smell and look dirty.. probably not getting washed at all! I feel there's some on here just trying to make parents feel guilty for no good reason!

How are we 11 pages in and people still think not being put in a bath tub equals not being washed.

@windmillandcoffee

Straight off the NSPCC website, which teachers have to look out for - signs of possible Neglect. Schools have to abide by this website for Safeguarding. Times have changed. Of course you can smell regularly unwashed children in dirty clothes. In the same way that you can smell last night's dinner, cigarette smoke, dogs or weed on them sometimes. Some things rightly raise alarm bells - others don't, but no need to mock it until you've read up about current Safeguarding practice in schools.
That's totally different than wearing the same jumper 2 days in a row and not having a bath or shower every night. If they smell and are actually dirty then yes neglect. That doesn't happen my not having a bath everyday fgs
windmillandcoffee · 18/03/2022 13:29

Totally agree, but young children are often doing activities and playing out which cause them to get grubby and older ones often do start to perspire from Year 7 upwards. Most parents do know best how often to bath / shower their children of course, but some don't do it often enough, hence my post. I just wanted to point out what schools are obliged keep an eye out for during the day. The olden days of just one bath per week (not including daily cleaning) would now be classed as Neglect and flagged up.

Yes, 2 or 3 proper baths a week plus daily face/ears/hands and nail cleaning, nails kept trimmed and scrubbed, fresh clean clothes on... don’t see how a child would be dirty-looking or smell bad despite no daily bath
Pinktruffle · 18/03/2022 16:52

My son is 16 months, under 6 months it was every few days - maybe twice a week. He hated baths and would often end up having a shower instead. As he's got older, he loves having a bath and it's everyday as part of his bedtime routine. To be fair, he needs it after nursery (3 days a week) and after swimming (1 day).

deathofastrawberry · 18/03/2022 21:15

9 month old.. been doing it every day since he was about 12 weeks to get into a bedtime routine. I probably would do it every 2-3 days if he didn't need it but... weaning Grin

The eczema thing obviously varies depending on the advice given, dependent on child/health care professional....the advice to have a daily bathing regimen (involving emollients and creams) was from the dermatologist, and was the advice given by GOSH. Her eczema improved vastly with daily bathing, but I have friends where the advice was to bathe less, which they found helpful.
Similar thing goes to the 'wind down' aspect of baths - giving ds baths was like wrestling and angry octotiger. It was chaos that was unpleasant for everyone and would lead to much screaming, wailing and sobbing....bit conducive to sleep at all! So baths were less frequent, as quick and efficient as possible and never near bedtime.
Different strokes for different folks!

pinkprettyroses · 18/03/2022 22:31

5 month old - 3 times a week.

This. A lot of posters on here seem to think that every single child,family,routine is the same, and anything different must be wrong.

7 year old 3 times a week, newborn once a week at the moment but will up to twice soon

redandwhite1 · 19/03/2022 01:11

@SundaysinKernow

Oh and meant to say clean uniforms once per week unless visibly dirty. Obvs clean underwear etc. Does anyone really do a whole clean uniform everyday??
Clean uniform/ PE kit every day and clean PJs!
Theoldwoman · 19/03/2022 11:45

What a bizarre thread!
I never knew people didn't bath or shower their kids daily. I had a bath or shower daily when growing up (70's child) and have continued into adulthood. My kids (now adults) were always bathed daily. Kids actually get grubbier than you would think.

Skyblueclouds77 · 29/03/2022 22:44

quillfram · 01/12/2025 23:48

Still weekly for my four year old and my eleven month old. Am I a terrible parent? We just really struggle to find time!

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 02/12/2025 07:25

Mine are 35, 34, 18 and 14. The older 3 do it when they feel like it, the 14yo is reminded every day but maybe does it a couple of times a week.
