And how old are they?

Just curious

When I was young i had a bath once a week on a Sunday at school age until I was old enough to shower independently.

My 4 week old has had one proper bath but is wiped down with cotton wool as and when needed

2 and 5 bath daily. 5 year old has hair washed every other day and 2 year old every day as he cannot eat without covering his head in food. Otherwise I’d only do every other day for him too.

MamaNeedsTea · 16/03/2022 22:54

16m old & 4yr old get a bath every night, always have done as part if their bedtime routine.

runforyourdog · 16/03/2022 23:21

Edit to say, when toddlers bathed most nights but now at school, home work, playing and stories at bedtime take priority.

Both of mine have had baths every night as part of their bedtime routine. They love it. It gives me a final bit of peace and to get their rooms ready before bed. Have done nightly baths ever since they were 3 weeks old. They're almost 5 & 10 now

Tomlettegregg · 17/03/2022 04:47

Every day as do we. It's absurd to me that people don't do the same. Kids get filthy.

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 17/03/2022 06:52

DD is 8. We used to bathe her every day or almost every day, when she was little and getting filthy (or as part of bedtime routine), but she just doesn't get as gross these days so it's more like 3 times a week plus a shower after swimming. As she gets closer to teenagedom we'll try and step it back up!

ThatsNotMyGolem · 17/03/2022 08:05

Every evening except Thursday and Saturday for DD (18 months).

GrendelsGrandma · 17/03/2022 08:11

As newborns it was once a week. Now they're 3 and 5.5 and they have two baths a week, we rinse their hair with water but don't shampoo it.

They're fine, washing too much is bad for the skin. Seems like a waste of time, gas and water to do it every day.

DD has clean polo, tights and pants for school but cardigans and pinafores last as long as we can manage - which is often only one day, admittedly!

@tomlettegregg I wash the filthy bits of my kids - hands and face. In summer I might shower them off most days if they've got sun cream on or sandy. I don't see how a fully dressed child gets filthy back, legs etc in colder months.

A quick google gave me some experts advice ...,
Lots of bathing can lead to dry, irritated skin. But also, the skin has natural protective oils, and natural bacteria, that help to keep us healthy and safe — and that can get washed away with daily bathing.
The American Academy of Dermatology set out some easy to follow guidelines for busy parents.
Children aged between six and 11 should bathe at least once or twice a week
The NHS recommends that you do not need to give a newborn and older babies a bath everyday.
They do suggest, however, that you may want to 'top and tail' your infant instead.

Trinacham · 17/03/2022 08:42

@Indoctro think that info is from a website I posted a link to earlier. But the clean freaks on Mumsnet know better than the experts - it's everyday, or you are lazy and unhygienic!

georgarina · 17/03/2022 08:57

My 4 year old around 4-5x a week and the days depend on whether he's dirty.

8 month old once a week.

They both have dry skin and eczema so no more than that.

MangoLipstick · 17/03/2022 09:07

Dc is 2, bath every night. It’s part of her routine & she is often covered in paint/felt tip/glitter/mud by the end of the day, so it’s a must.

Her hair gets washed twice a week.

mummyh2016 · 17/03/2022 09:10

Twice a week for us, DD is 4 and DS is 8 weeks. DD does also have a shower after swimming once a week also. If they're dirty they will have extra baths but I wouldn't have time to bath the baby every day like some people do, even DD wasn't bathed every day and I was very PFB with her!

RedRobyn2021 · 17/03/2022 09:10

At that age I bathed my daughter once every four days

She 13mo now and we bathe her every two days

drawingpad · 17/03/2022 09:19

Its sleep cues, comforting to be in warm water and they understand that bedtime/ story comes next.

It was the absolute opposite for DD who never coped with bathing due to being autistic. We very quickly worked out she coped better with morning baths, every other day (now she is 12 it's showers) - the lovely feeling of being in warm water left her when she had to make the transition from bath to pyjamas. The air hitting when you are wet, the feeling of being wet, and very thing about it really.

IdblowJonSnow · 17/03/2022 09:31

Every other day. More when younger and would get filthy at nursery/playing.
Once a week is too little! Imo.

goodnightgrumble · 17/03/2022 09:37

Kids don't need bathing everyday! A good wash down maybe. My kids get bathed twice a week and washed in between. Energy bills are high enough!

goodnightgrumble · 17/03/2022 09:39

@Justcashnosweets

8 year old daughter, twice a week. She has eczema flare ups and our GP said that bathing children every day is completely unnecessary unless they are actually dirty.
Exactly! My GP friend said the same. We have enough of an energy crisis as it is. If not a quick five minute shower does the trick if you want to wash them every night!
WorkEvent · 17/03/2022 09:58

3.5yo and 16mo get bathed approx 3 or 4 times per week. Hair wash usually once or twice. No hard and fast rules other than always having a bath and hair wash after swimming lessons (no showers at the pool as it’s a small private place). Biggest has very bad eczema so we try not to overdo it and will do a quick flannel as needed.

ukborn · 17/03/2022 10:17

I bathed my babies/kids every day as part of the bedtime routine.
As they got old enough to do it themselves they chose - now as teens my son showers every day, maybe twice if he goes to the gym, my daughter has a bath about three times a week and washes her hair once a week.

BourbonVanilla · 17/03/2022 10:27

My 1yo gets bathed once a week.
Bathing every day is bad for the skin and is absolutely unnecessary until teenage years (oil glands in the skin don't get fully functional until puberty).

Bathing/showering regularly is not bad for the skin. There's a middle ground if you are too lazy/can't afford water/child has skin conditions. Once a week is disgusting and neglectful. Like some one says it's basic parenting. But also like was also mentioned English people have a reputation/stereotype for not bathing and smelling so I will leave you to it.
jimpamdwight · 17/03/2022 11:50

Everyday, 4 and 6

Yes it is bad for the skin. Maybe educate yourself before you post your disgusting judgemental comments about someone's parenting.
