Making effort with dd1 who was 2 last week. She has been showing signs of being ready since she was 17mths. So today we have been bare bottomed and managed 10 wees on potty, 7 elsewhere..about 4 of which were just dribbles.. we also had one pooh half on floor and half on potty...not too bad for first day I think.

I am, just started today, its my 3rd attempt with ds who will be 3 next month.
Its gone far better today than previous times as he actually managed to go on the potty was very pleased and so was he!

Your dd sounds like she'll crack it in no time.

I'm following GF although not by the letter just the good bits

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 28/12/2007 21:17

Well done! Sounds like good progress.

I found that dd used to get annoyed with me asking her if she needed to go to the toilet every 30 mins so started putting her on the toilet at the same time each day - after breakfast, before we went out, before lunch etc and it just seemed to click with her, also not many accidents as she seems to be able to hold on for hours...

Also always having a potting in the room so its a reminder for them. Definitely going bare bottomed is the way to go!

I have just posted this in another thread...

Hi there

I decided to start potty training ds last sunday as he seemed to be ready, he is 2 and a half, he had got to the stage of telling me he had done a poo, and on and off would say he wanted a wee but whenever I tried him on the potty he wouldn't go, he did one wee on the potty the previous wednesday though so I thought I would give it a go anyway seeing as I would have a clear 10 days over xmas to dedicate myself to it without nursery interruptions.

After three accidents including two poos in his pants I decided I didn't have the energy to do it as I had come down with a stinking cold and needed to do the xmas shop. I did start in ernest again on Xmas Eve though as I knew I didn't have to go out anywhere. We had two accidents and 5 wees on the potty, I was asking him to go every 20 mins and every half an hour would make him sit on it for a few minutes. On Xmas day we had one accident and one poo on the potty. On Boxing day, one accident which was my fault as I moved his potty and didn't tell him Yesterday was a totally dry day and he started telling me when he needed a wee and he went a mammoth ten times including a poo, I think he had the novelty factor, plus I have made him a chart and every time he goes on the potty we put a sticker on it for him and a bigger sticker for every poo. Today he has taken himself to the loo every time (that's where his potty is) So all well and good I think he has cracked it, I must say I am amazed he has taken to it so quick, I just need to try him on the toilet now.

The trick is to start when you can spend the time with them, don't take them out if you can help it until they have the hang of it. It needs constant attention, the first few days you need to second guess them. I have found that dressing them in easy to pull down trousers is good too, because if they do have an accident they really don;t like the feeling of wet trousers, plus they also help to soak up the wee so you don;t get as much on the floor, just make sure you have plenty of clothes, I went to sainsburys and bought 4 pairs of cheap jogging bottoms and six pairs of pants to add to the 5 pairs I already had, eventually they will get fed up of being wet and getting changed all the time.

hth... good luck

mosschops30 · 28/12/2007 21:22

good idea sohpie, I could hear the irritation in ds's voice today with me keep asking him if he wanted to go on the potty

MrsFish · 28/12/2007 21:23

I have followed the gf method and I think it has worked very well. The stickers on a chart have made all the difference to ds, he loves choosing the sticker and putting it on, no need for chocolate bribes

SantaKLAWs · 28/12/2007 21:31

Ignore accidents, and lavish praise when she gets it right.

I tried with dd just before she was 2 but she never wanted to sit on potty for more than a millisecond. Then when she was 25 months she suddenly wanted to wear her pants and use potty so I went with it. She was very quickly dry during the day but would still poo in her pants. So I got out the Smarties again and gave her 1 or 2 every time she managed in potty. Again she fairly quickly got the idea and now she's 2 and a half and we rarely have an accident.

She drinks loads so we're not ready to dispense with the "sleep pants" yet.

I have a seat adapter in the car so that we can use toilets when out and about but lately she's gained confidence in supporting herself on normal seats.

I love my dd, she's so clever! I love watching her grow and develop! [mummy's pride emoticon] You know how it feels...?

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 29/12/2007 09:01

well day 2 and so far since 7am we have one wee on floor but I think dd1 was trying to move the potty around the side of the couch and was being stopped by dd2.DD1 then immediately went to put a nappy on so she has obviously clicked there is some work required on her part.

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 29/12/2007 09:38

arghh an in potty..other wee on floor and one pooh..why is she refusing to wee in potty today??

OP posts:
MrsFish · 29/12/2007 09:46

Have you got any other distractions going on?

Just deal with it, don't make a fuss of the accidents. Have you got her wearing pants? it might help, she will get the 'wet' consequence of not getting to the potty on time. Also what are you doing to reward her for using the potty? I have found stickers on a chart have really helped with ds, he is on his 6th day now and hopefully his third dry day.

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 29/12/2007 10:01

tv is off so she is just playing with ds same as yesterday. Reward is chocolate button. No pants on her yet as its only 2nd day and she has wet feeling from pee running down her leg and gathering in a nice puddle at her feet. Need to go to shops for some milk so will have to use a pull up for the trip..dh just phoned and said I should put her in knickers but if shes wet there is nowhere to change her and is 10min walk back in the cold!!

OP posts:
MrsFish · 29/12/2007 10:11

Well that would certainly be uncomfortable for her and make her think twice next time?? just a thought, but generally they say not to confuse the issue by putting them back in nappies once you have started the training as it gives them confusing signals and will make your job harder in the long run.

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 29/12/2007 10:17

thats true but I dont think I ever went out with ds until he had clicked about the underpants not being nappy...lol thats why I choose this week as we have no school run etc..ohh what to do...

How's it going?

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 29/12/2007 15:11

not good..went to shop with knickers on and no accidents..came home and weed on floor when I was on the phone for all of 10 seconds. She has more knickers on now but so far not a single wee on potty today although everytime just before she has weed on floor she has sat on the potty then got up and ran to somewhere she couldnt be seen..obviously when I get to her she has wet.

Where have you got the potty?

On ds's second day he started putting the potty in the downstairs loo and would only go on it in there with the door closed so no-one could see him... just a thought .

Don't lose heart it could be all good again tomorrow, grit your teeth and work through it, I think you will kick yourself if you go back to nappies now. It will click with your dd sooner or later

SantaKLAWs · 29/12/2007 18:52

I went through the same, it's very frustrating but only lasts a short time.

Don't forget to make a HUGE fuss everytime she does it on potty, and just say 'never mind, try again later' in a VERY calm and controlled way every time there's an accident.

My dd also wee'd every time I had my attention elsewhere for a millisecond.

I had a potty downstairs and a potty upstairs. I had loads of old towelling nappies about for mopping up and 1001 for cleaning at the ready.

I had a Potty Book for Girls which came with a sticker chart, and then found another potty book in a charity shop so we used these as well to talk about using the potty

And as I said earlier, when it just wasn't working for my dd at first I stopped trying with her and put her back in nappies but left potties out, and also kept pants at the ready and a month or so later she wanted to wear pants one day and I just followed her lead. We never looked back.

The biggest key is to stay relaxed about it (which is easier said than done when you are changing the umpteenth pair of pants that day! )

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 29/12/2007 20:30

well she was better this afternoon one wee in potty then half on floor and half on potty. However she had knickers on all afternoon and only wet them at 7pm. Am going to keep going at least for this week as we dont really have anywhere we need to be where we usually have school nursery run etc. She knows what she is doing as before every 'accident' she has stood next to the potty sat on it briefly then ran to wherever she was going to pee. Potty is in living room and trying to keep it in the exact same place as our living/dining/kitchen is all very open.

I'm potty training too nemo, hard work isn't it, although we've been doing it a week now and only 2 wees on floor so far, pooh's are a bit more complex - see my thread here so at the moment as long as she is poohing i dont really care where though potty would be nice and i've mentioned the potty/ sat her on it or the loo when I can.

My dd2 was doing the running away from potty and weeing on the floor too about a month ago so after a couple of days i quit and went back to it just before christmas. As your dd is doing well and you have the time to do it now it seems a shame not to try.
