Child overdosed on multivitamins - had 10 gummies.

Feeling like the worst parent in the world, I gave him 1, then baby started screaming due to constipation, put it down, he grabbed the pack without me noticing and ran into the play room. I thought he was being silly and cheeky for some reason but not that. He Came back and I managed to get two More out of his mouth but it was a new pack so I know he's had 10.

It's wellkid peppa gummies, a-e vits. We even say: only 1 a day, and he knows. He is 2, 3 in January. I called 111 and waiting for a callback.

Anyone had anything similar? Im worried about toxic reactions.

Most likely he will be absolutely fine, he will probably just wee out the excess vitamins.

time2tork · 23/12/2021 11:14

My daughter did this once with the "sweets" she found in the cupboard!

She had around 20, I called 111, they checked the ingredients of the gummies and checked her weight.

She was absolutely fine.

Swirlywoo · 23/12/2021 11:14

I understood (from a medical friend) that you just wee out excess multivitamins. So see what 111 says but try not to worry too much OP Flowers

Ds did this once. It's only an issue if the vits contain iron I believe.

LefttoherownDevizes · 23/12/2021 11:16

Vitamins a is the only one you really need to worry about as too much can be toxic and it isn't week's out. How much vitamin a per gummy? To be honest I reckon a piece of liver probably has more vitamin a than 10 gummies . ..

magicstars · 23/12/2021 11:18

Just checked & there's no iron in them.

LefttoherownDevizes · 23/12/2021 11:18

Are they the 3+ ones?

gemloving · 23/12/2021 11:21

Thanks everyone.

@LefttoherownDevizes 400 (I don't know how to make that sign) but it's 50% of his daily intake, so he's had 500%.

Taking a picture now.

Honestly, I feel so sick. We had such a lovely and great start to the day. I'm now anxiety ridden.

He is 3 in January and we only started with these last month. He's big and tall, so I thought it's ok (now questioning why I even made this decision).

These figures are for 2 gummies if you look carefully.

In any case, they are mostly sweets really. Try not to worry too much, I'm sure he will be OK.

pinkcattydude · 23/12/2021 11:27

Weigh him I know they will ask and it’s easier to have the info than try and weigh him whilst on the phone

gemloving · 23/12/2021 11:28

@pinkcattydude I knows about 15kgs

There is nothing in there that will cause issues if overeaten. He’ll be fine OP Wink

LefttoherownDevizes · 23/12/2021 11:29

So a whole sweet potato had the same account of vitamin as 6 funnies so I think you're all good

LefttoherownDevizes · 23/12/2021 11:29

^gummies!!

gemloving · 23/12/2021 11:29

@OnlyAFleshWound oh that's good to know! I didn't even notice. Thank you

The figures are for 2 a day so he’s only taken half of the overdose you think he has - which is good news!

Fishingforhappiness · 23/12/2021 11:30

OP I work in this area. He hasn't taken enough to be chronically unwell. The only concern would be vit A, symptoms of which would be rashes, vomitting or dizziness. So just keep and eye on him. But I wouldn't expect to see anything. He will be fine. I would avoid vitamins for 10 days then restart. Put it down to experience and have a lovely Christmas.

Swirlywoo · 23/12/2021 11:33

As a one off I don't think you need to be concerned OP, even about the Vit A. He'll be fine. My kids love these gummies too, I have to hide them Smile

LefttoherownDevizes · 23/12/2021 11:33

As vitamins a and d accumulate in the body you would need to be taking them over a period of time to build up to dangerous levels, a one off won't cause harm at all.

Poor you though, very jiffling

InTheLabyrinth · 23/12/2021 11:33

You still need to check it out but those Daily intakes are for 2 tablets.

Good advice here @gemloving

As a one off overdose for vit A he’d need to have had hundreds. More than a bottle of kids vitamins. It has an extremely large safety margin.

O/p it’s fine. Kids do this all the time and it’s built in to the safety considerations. It’s likely an “overdose” will be more than a bottle- when companies designed “gummies” to be so sweetlike kids eating them like sweets is factored in to bottle size, strength etc…

@Fishingforhappiness @Swirlywoo @LefttoherownDevizes

Thank you! This is very helpful and what a relief. I feel like I gained a few more grey hairs in the last hour. Kids are watching peppa for me to calm down.

I feel like I can breathe again, turns the telly off and go back to playing.

Merry Christmas everyone. It's the first my DS1 understands xx

10 wouldn't do any harm. Excess vitamins come out in your wee, no problem.
