Would you smoke and breastfeed? And what are your reasons?

It just seems if you smoke it’s fine as long as you breastfeed as some PP have said and I can’t get my head around it.

It sounds like you’ve misinterpreted what they said. What they actually said what that IF you smoke it’s still better to breastfeed than it is to formula feed because of the benefits conveyed by breastfeeding.
I haven’t seen anyone say it’s “fine to smoke”.

Nobody's said it's fine to smoke. It's bad for your baby and for you and quitting is advisable. But practically speaking, "smoke and breastfeed" or "don't smoke and formula feed" is not a choice that women face. The choice is whether to breastfeed or not if you do smoke, and data shows that to not breastfeed because you think you'll be passing smoking byproducts to baby in your milk is misguided.

I think another poster said that nicotine doesn’t enter the milk which I think is ridiculous.

@stalkersaga thank you 😊 ISWYM

@Mollie12

I’m really not trying to win parent points here if that is what you are thinking. My point is I would never knowingly put my child at risk ie. would not smoke because I am aware that would not be best for my child. It just seems if you smoke it’s fine as long as you breastfeed as some PP have said and I can’t get my head around it.
No - the advice is to give up smoking if you have a baby- full stop.

But if a mother does smoke and can't/won't stop then breastfeeding has benefits and is recommended.

I don't smoke and hate it, but it is an addiction so that's probably why people do it.

IncompleteSenten · 13/12/2021 10:45

Everyone knows how harmful smoking is but an addict is an addict and people get defensive about it because they know it's harmful.

I smoked for 25 years off and on and told myself all sorts of crap to justify the next cigarette.
