Would you smoke and breastfeed? And what are your reasons?

Yeaaah.. I think it's pretty gross tbh. I always struggled to quit smoking but it was a no brainer to stop smoking before falling pregnant and now as a breastfeeding mother, I have no desire to start up again anytime soon. I can't believe someone would smoke when they're breastfeeding. Is she showering and changing her clothes after every cigarette too? Because the third hand smoke would worry me. I don't think breastfeeding would counter that kind of exposure.

ALightThatNeverGoesOut · 12/12/2021 13:03

Breastfed babies with smoking mothers are still at less risk of diabetes, respiratory infections etc than formula fed babies but no one bats an eye about formula. Obviously on a sliding scale the optimum is non smoking mother breastfeeding but smoking mother breastfeeding is still better than formula feeding. So yeah smoking isn't a great idea for anyone but it's not the worst thing you can do.

Latinorapida · 12/12/2021 13:19

The idea of handling a newborn with that stale smell of fags on your fingers and breath… grim. Even if you wash your hands and brush your teeth. I just don’t understand it. And I’m someone who smoked for years.

If she is going to carry on smoking it is better that she breastfeeds than formula feeds.
Smoking does increase the risk of SIDS but so does formula feeding.
It would obviously be better if she quit smoking and breastfed but that is easier said than done.

Mollie12 · 12/12/2021 13:41

So…a smoking mother who breastfeeds is better than formula feeding even if mum doesn’t smoke?

So…smoke away but as long as you breastfeed everything is fine??

OP posts:
ALightThatNeverGoesOut · 12/12/2021 13:42

No.

Cfive · 12/12/2021 14:03

I did. Flame me now.

Felt awful about it at the time, still do.

Smoking however, does not negate the benefits of breastfeeding for mother or baby.

There lots of chemicals which end up in breast milk. Some more harmful than others. During pregnancy the carbon monoxide is the biggest risk for baby, I have no research to back this up but due to its nature I'm sure carbon monoxide doesn't end up in breast milk. The nicotine and the other horrible (worse) chemicals do.

Microplastics end up in the placenta and there are probably many other chemicals that we are, as of yet, unable to identify that have harmful effects on breastfeeding babies.

PotteringAlong · 12/12/2021 14:46

No, everything is not fine. But smoking and formula is worse than smoking and breastfeeding.

No one is saying everything is fine. They’re saying if you’ve got the shit option of the mother of a newborn smoking, then smoking and breastfeeding is the least shit shit option.

Babies and children who are exposed to cigarette smoke have a much higher incidence of pneumonia, asthma, ear infections, bronchitis, sinus infections, eye irritation, and croup.

Colic occurs more often in babies whose mothers or fathers smoke or if a breastfeeding mother smokes. Researchers believe that not only does the nicotine transferred into mother’s milk upset baby but the passive smoke in the home acts as an irritant. Babies of smoking parents fuss more, and mothers who smoke may be less able to cope with a colicky baby (due to lower levels of prolactin).

Heavy smoking by breastfeeding moms occasionally causes symptoms in the breastfeeding baby such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.

Babies of smoking mothers and fathers have a seven times greater chance of dying from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Children of smoking parents have two to three times more visits to the doctor, usually from respiratory infections or allergy-related illnesses.

Children who are exposed to passive smoke in the home have lower blood levels of HDL, the good cholesterol that helps protect against coronary artery disease.

MrsColon · 12/12/2021 14:51

Basically, she's still better off breastfeeding than formula feeding, but it's really bad news to smoke if you have a baby.

AegonT · 12/12/2021 14:52

My understanding is that some of the bad things in cigarettes pass through the milk but it is still best to breastfeed if you do smoke as having a smoking parent massively increases the risk if SIDs and breastfeeding helps to reduce it a bit.

thickthighs73 · 12/12/2021 14:56

Yuk how vile

escapingthecity · 12/12/2021 15:08

Whether you BF or not, smoking when you have a baby is an utterly stupid and selfish thing to do. The dangers of secondhand smoke for babies are well known.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 12/12/2021 17:00

Abusive and revolting

Hmm not seen anyone post anything like that on this thread.
AliasGrape · 12/12/2021 18:16

@MajorCarolDanvers someone did - @ALightThatNeverGoesOut has posted pretty much exactly that.
Formula is worse than smoking apparently.

BabyLove22 · 12/12/2021 18:22

@Phrenologistsfinger

God, really selfish! Some people just don’t deserve to be parents, they really don’t! Angry

Go to the infertility boards and see women putting themselves through hell for years on end, doing all they can, cutting out every thing everything and having rounds and rounds of injections, surgeries and heartbreaks, with a marginal chance at motherhood despite all this.

And SOME cannot even be arsed to give up smoking so they don’t fuck up their kids lives. This fvcking world makes me despair.

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 "I couldn't quit" is bollocks. If they wanted to they would.

I smoked and stopped straight away, and I'll never smoke again

BertieBotts · 12/12/2021 18:23

Yes I did when DS1 was a toddler.

Breastfeeding doesn't cancel out the effects, but changing to formula feeding would be pointless (as well as a net loss of the BF benefits) - it's the smoking that's the problem, not the breastfeeding-while-smoking.

It doesn't really go through milk so that doesn't matter. It's the second hand smoke which is a problem.

I don't think anyone has ever compared BF + smoking with FF + no smoking so there's no way to compare the two. And I think it would be very unusual for that to be the choice. The choice is between BF + smoking or FF + smoking and out of those two, BF + smoking is better.

The main reason I avoided smoking when DC were tiny was because smoking and co-sleeping is risky and co-sleeping was more important to me.

Mollie12 · 12/12/2021 18:52

@BertieBotts I meant for people like myself who struggled to Breastfeed but don’t smoke.

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 12/12/2021 20:43

Ok, but why make that comparison? There is no point trying to count up who is being a better parent.

If you are a smoker then no, that lifestyle choice should not factor into whether you choose to breastfeed or not. They are entirely separate decisions and don't impact on each other. Breastfeeding has health benefits over formula (but may not be the best thing in every situation). Not smoking has health benefits over smoking. Since you can't quantify exactly how much healthier one thing is than the other you'll never know. And that's fine. Just keep on doing the best you can for your own baby, and don't worry about what anybody else is doing (unless abusive obviously).

LaMarschallin · 12/12/2021 20:52

BertieBotts

Ok, but why make that comparison? There is no point trying to count up who is being a better parent.

That's exactly what I thought.

Udouhun · 13/12/2021 09:38

It's disgusting to smoke around small children.

Mollie12 · 13/12/2021 10:12

I’m really not trying to win parent points here if that is what you are thinking. My point is I would never knowingly put my child at risk ie. would not smoke because I am aware that would not be best for my child. It just seems if you smoke it’s fine as long as you breastfeed as some PP have said and I can’t get my head around it.
