Elf on a shelf. Anyone else not doing it?

Please tell me I'm not the only one not doing this bastard Elf on a bloody shelf?

I feel like parents around me are doing them with amazing balloons, advent calendars , cupcakes!

Each to their own but I feel so guilty for not doing it now. But I'm finding every year it's something new and to be quite frank I cannot be arsed!

I hate the little fucker. Someone bought DS one a few years ago and I ended up having to play along as he was the only child in his class without a story about what his elf had been up to.

This year I feel he is officially old enough to not care - I've been trying to think of a funny departure for him but I can't even be arsed doing that.

BrilliantBetty · 30/11/2021 22:16

I will do it for the week leading up to xmas. As my DC's classmates / pals all seem to have it and chat about it. I don't want them to feel too left out... but not for 24 days?!
7 days is enough of a PITA.

Chely · 30/11/2021 22:16

Thankfully my kids said no because it's creepy

Nope. Not a chance in hell. The elf is so fucking creepy and I just can’t stand it. I love Christmas (despite being Jewish) but I’m not a fan of this elf and North Pole breakfast bollocks.

We have advent calendars that’s plenty!

autumnboys · 30/11/2021 22:22

I’ve never done Elf on the Shelf. I read a chapter of The Jesse Tree to whoever will listen most nights, that’s about it.

nopenotplaying · 30/11/2021 22:30

Nah. It seems that it's mostly done so the parents can share their latest effort on social media Hmm

RedwineforSantaplease · 30/11/2021 22:37

Nope. And they've got a bog standard advent calendar each rather than a toy one. So much commercialism, waste and pressure on (mostly) mums to have all this stuff sorted and set up.

mummabubs · 30/11/2021 22:44

I love being creative and imaginative etc... But I hate everything that bastard elf stands for!

I hate that it's another piece of commercial tat (along with associated accessories like elf balloons and displays). I hate that the main reason that most of the people who I know that participate is to see which day can generate the most likes on their social media profile. I hate the whole premise: he's a hypocritical spy sent by Father Christmas to instill fear into kids, with half of the message being kids must behave or they go on the bad list thanks to being dobbed in by Mr Elf, but when aforementioned elf does daily antics then it's amusing to be naughty. Where's the logic in that!? (Rant over, I just really hate that elf!!) And to answer your OP... No I shall not be doing it. 😂

KaptainKaveman · 30/11/2021 22:48

What is elf on a shelf? I have never heard of it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/11/2021 23:06

Santa's male, mum does all the work. Elf is male (well most of them), mum does all the work. I suppose with Jesus, Mary did most of the work. At least the wise men (who may not actually all have been male) bring presents.
DappledThings · 30/11/2021 23:08

Nope, no chance. DS(5) mentioned this year and I just said no. He never mentioned it again. Also no to Xmas Eve boxes and that bollocks.

I don't know what a North Pole Breakfast is. I'm going to Google it now and I suspect I'll be rolling my eyes hard.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 30/11/2021 23:09

Nope, never have. Creepy little fucker.
Also no matching Xmas Pj's, Christmas eve boxes or other stuff just because it's now a thing you just must do.

WarmthAndDepth · 30/11/2021 23:12

I caved last year as DD2 really wanted one. We had some fun, but I noticed that, the closer to Christmas it got and the more ragged I felt, the naughtier and more reckless the elf became, it got a bit dark for a few days around the 3rd of advent...
This year, I have shown DD a copy of the new part-time peripatetic employment contract for the Elf; he's definitely part time this year.

SleepingStandingUp · 30/11/2021 23:14

DS doesn't want something in the house that comes awake when he's asleep and walks about. He thinks it's creepy. He's right.

KingDangerMouse · 30/11/2021 23:21

Nope. Another bit of commercial tat. Good for the Insta my best life crew, though Grin

Wafflesnsniffles · 30/11/2021 23:27

Nope. Its just as weird as the lying to kids about Santa thing. Those elves are so creepy. I hate the whole concept.

maofteens · 30/11/2021 23:56

Elf on a shelf must have been made up by someone with too much time on their hands and a sadistic streak. I only know of one person who ever did it, and I think they regretted it by day five.

saleorbouy · 01/12/2021 00:00

Nope... the elf has never set foot in or house and never will!
Don't feel bad you don't have to follow the crowd, be individual and do your own Christmas things.
I'm not one to follow any trend, viral nuance, ice bucket challenge sort of thing!

Idolovetrees · 01/12/2021 07:38

Me. I never have.

APurpleSquirrel · 01/12/2021 07:47

No, we haven't done Elf on the Shelf & won't be starting. It's too much pressure & effort each day.
They do have one in DDs class at school - or have done in previous years- which she thinks is fun, but it's the teachers dealing with that one. She's not bothered about having one at home.

Imgonnakillbill · 01/12/2021 07:53

No way, those things creep me out. I’ve told my kids the Elf on the Shelf isn’t invited to our house - they have them in their classrooms so they’re happy.

Figmentofimagination · 01/12/2021 08:04

Never. I hate the thing. I've got enough on my plate without having to deal with an stupid elf.
In a group chat a friend keeps making out my DS will miss out because I refuse to do it. The joke of her saying I'm mean is wearing thin. She also keeps joking that one will appear in my letterbox. If it does I will be really pissed off, because she hasn't respected my no and it will make me feel like she thinks my parenting is inadequate because I'm not up to her standard.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 01/12/2021 08:06

No never done it and have stopped following everyone on Facebook who is!!

Dotdotlineline · 01/12/2021 09:34

@Figmentofimagination if she does then buy her kids a very large drum kit Grin

Figmentofimagination · 01/12/2021 10:59

She turned up at 8:30am. Her and her young daughter stood at the door with the elf and some chocolates. I had to accept it to not upset her daughter but I've told her she's gone to far and I'm really really mad (read fuming/pissed off/disrespected).
The elf is going in the bottom of a box. If she asks for it back she can have it back, if not next year it can go to a charity shop.
