Elf on a shelf. Anyone else not doing it?

Please tell me I'm not the only one not doing this bastard Elf on a bloody shelf?

I feel like parents around me are doing them with amazing balloons, advent calendars , cupcakes!

Each to their own but I feel so guilty for not doing it now. But I'm finding every year it's something new and to be quite frank I cannot be arsed!

No, purely because I have no imagination whatsoever and I’d fall asleep before I moved him. My sister does amazing stuff with hers, not sure where she gets ideas or the energy but the kids enjoy it.
I also think the elf is a wee bit creepy
But if people enjoy it and get something out of it then that’s great.

Ellieboolou33 · 30/11/2021 21:13

No absolutely not, nor do I do Christmas Eve boxes, wtf are they about! Do they replace stockings?

We always let the kids open one gift Christmas Eve a a little tradition and eat our way through the chocolates on the tree

CheshireChat · 30/11/2021 21:15

Just wanted to say thanks for reminding me to get them out for tomorrow. Sorry Grin!

Jokes aside, they're a big thing in our area and the kids who don't have them complain about feeling left out. I mostly just stash them around the house with the occasional small surprise.

I dont do elf on the shelf. He's creepy looking
to be honest and I don't need a constant threat of being watched by an elf to make my kids behave.

minipie · 30/11/2021 21:16

Nope. And I don’t do Christmas eve boxes or North Pole breakfasts or any of the other Christmas “inflation” that’s just adding yet more work for —parents— mothers. Christmas is lovely (and hard work) enough without all these new extras and thankfully the DC have never asked for any of them.

I slightly love the Mensch on a Bench idea though Grin.

RestingStitchFace · 30/11/2021 21:19

Nope. Never have. My kid is autistic and just gets too confused by the mixed messages behind it all....

Plus it's a right royal pain in the arse

escapingthecity · 30/11/2021 21:25

Plan never ever to do it.

FuglyBitch · 30/11/2021 21:27

Cannot be ars*d, never have, never will

User5252727 · 30/11/2021 21:28

My husband and I have made a pact to never do it! I think it's both naff and creepy, we're swerving wide!

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 30/11/2021 21:31

DD is 8. We're not doing it and never have. I've got enough to do!

EnidFrighten · 30/11/2021 21:33

Facking American bollocks. I like a nice half-arsed British Christmas, thanks.

jingletits36 · 30/11/2021 21:34

We do it but we don't do all the elaborate stunts, the elf just moves about and occasionally leaves little notes or sweets. It's not a lot of effort for something that makes dc really happy.

All the crazy stunts and scenes are usually more for social media likes in my opinion.

CBA

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 30/11/2021 21:44

Oof just realised I haven't got my elves out. I have 2, one in red who gives treats and does helpful things, one in black who plays tricks and does mischief.

I mostly forget to move them around but occasionally think up some fun stuff, depends how busy I am. I put them in 2 weeks isolation last year, that was a stroke of genius Grin

Twizbe · 30/11/2021 21:48

I'm not doing it. I've got enough to do in the next 24 days. I don't need anything else going on.

sweetkitty · 30/11/2021 21:53

Wish I had never started the bloody thing got guilt tripped into it a bit. Was so happy when DS said he was too old for it Grin it’s the biggest PITA ever and it’s just getting madder and madder with balloons, cookies, cakes etc

LovesColourGreen · 30/11/2021 21:54

Is it an American thing, just like baby showers everyone seems to have these days? I find it a bit spooky having an elf 'watching' you to be honest. I would've hated that as a child - I was frightened by anything like that. My nan's friend used to buy me those Victorian style dolls with the china faces and my mum lined them up on a shelf in my bedroom. As beautiful as they were, I was convinced they watched me at night and eventually asked mum to get rid of them ...

LuluBlakey1 · 30/11/2021 21:56

I have never heard of it.

Gooseysgirl · 30/11/2021 22:01

No fucking way life is too short (note to self to unfollow all the elf moms for the next 25 days on FB)

Gooseysgirl · 30/11/2021 22:04

And I'll just leave this here...

Elf on a shelf. Anyone else not doing it?
853ax · 30/11/2021 22:06

No I feel by adding all these extra things take away some of the magic of Santa.

mnp321 · 30/11/2021 22:09

The elf charade seems totally pointless to me. And in the"extra" category like Christmas Eve boxes.

Christmas has enough consumerism in stockings on Christmas Day (in a non bah humbug way as I love giving presents), I think if all gets out of hand otherwise.

Cyclingforcake · 30/11/2021 22:10

No. Our elf is invisible and puts the chocolate in the advent calendars every night. I struggle to remember to do that let alone move a toy around.

Snugglepumpkin · 30/11/2021 22:13

No, we have no stalker elves in the house teaching children that they are under surveillance.

Also no Santa cam baubles etc...

My son behaves because he wants to, not because he's under observation (or believes he is).

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 30/11/2021 22:15

Mine aren't spies for Santa or stalker elves, just a bit of extra fun and the DC enjoy it so I'm happy to do it.
