Just that! Is it Nan, pop, gran, grandad etc..? And who decides what names? Has it caused any problems?

We are Grandma and Grandad ( first name) ..paternal grandparents are Nanny ( first name ) and Grandad ( first name).....my Mum (DGG) is Grandma ( first name) ......we decided on our names .....my children were happy for us to be called whatever we liked.

nannybeach · 20/11/2021 22:38

We are nanny beach, given by youngest DKD because of where we live, and grandad Grinch. Others granma first name, grandad first name

holmez · 20/11/2021 22:39

I've always had different names for each set of grandparents.

Having mixed heritage children means that we have different names for my parents - grandma and grandad - and for my dw's parents - Japanese language equivalent.

Growing up, my mum's parents were Grandma and Grandad, and my dad's mum was Nana.

Grandma and Grandpa
Nana and Grandad
Gran
Grandad/Daddy's Daddy (they haven't seen him for over 10 years because neither their Dad nor his dad bother to arrange it)
Great Nannie
Great Grandad

All names were chosen by the Grandparents. Although Gran chose Gran and then when her other DC had children decided she wanted to be Grandma and tells anyone who'll listen that I made her be called Gran Hmm

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 20/11/2021 22:42

Granny name x2 and Grandad (my dad is dead, only one dc met him but he was also grandad). I chose.

Scarby9 · 20/11/2021 22:42

@nannybeach
I know a Nanny Seaside!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 20/11/2021 22:45

Due to blended families, we have three sets. FIL and Step-MIL got the classic and sensible Grandad and Grandma. The others chose their own "names" (actually just random collections of sounds) that are too embarrassing to mention, and will lead to the GC refusing to acknowledge them in public once they're old enough to realise this. ShockConfusedHmm

Dancingalong · 20/11/2021 22:45

Nana and Granda
Granny and Grandpop

They chose them.

Scarby9 · 20/11/2021 22:45

Granny and Grandma Surname (seen less frequently) for great grandmothers.
Grandpa Surname for less frequently seen widowed grandpa.
Grandma and TaTa for other grandparents. TaTa was a childish mispronunciation that stuck.

DeadButDelicious · 20/11/2021 22:49

Nanny and Gan-dad on my side, Nana first name and Grandad on DH's, she has 2 great grandparents on his side as well and they are called Granny and Papa.

hiredandsqueak · 20/11/2021 22:50

I'm Granny but dgs calls me gangan, exh is grandad.
For my children the called my df Grandad Joe, his wife Lizzie, exh's dm Pat (she didn't want to be given a Grandma title) and exh's df Jim, you old bogger although how it came about I can't remember. Jim was their favourite though and both my dgs have his name as their middle name.

DeadButDelicious · 20/11/2021 22:52

Oh yes, they all chose their 'titles' except for Gan-dad, that's evolved from grandad and I think it's adorable. She has a lovely relationship with my dad. I had no strong feelings about names, whatever they felt comfy with. Fortunately there was no issues or squabbling about it.

ladygindiva · 20/11/2021 22:52

My parents are granny and grandad, dps parents are grandma and grandpa, not sure how or when that was decided but it was.

Angel2702 · 20/11/2021 22:52

Mine call them slightly different names, my eldest couldn’t pronounce Grandma and grandad as a toddler and his mispronunciations stuck for all of the grandchildren.

creamcheeseandlox · 20/11/2021 22:53

Maternal side are nanna and poppa, just as I called my df's parents. Paternal side are nanny and grandad.

MonkeyPuddle · 20/11/2021 22:54

Grandma and my step dads first name on my side.
Nannie and her partners first name on his dads side.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 20/11/2021 22:55

this thread has made me laugh-

when DC were very small one of their grandma's had eye surgery and had to wear sunglasses- somehow she was Grandma With (sunglasses) and other Grandmother was Grandma Without.

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 20/11/2021 22:59

Grandad and nana. They chose them but I did ask mum for it not to be nanny as I dislike it. The other 2 grandparents are deceased and absent so they don't have titles and are referred to as dads mum and mums dad.

Peakypolly · 20/11/2021 23:02

Granny and Grandad
Grandma and Grandpa.
We followed the example of the pre-existing grandchildren for the first two and, ours being the first grandchildren on DH's side, choose the available titles for them.

sunshineandshowers40 · 20/11/2021 23:04

Grandma and Grandad. Two grandma's, I he grandparents chose their own names.

BlairSinclair · 20/11/2021 23:05

Nanna and Dandad - suspect this will become Grandad eventually.
Gran and Pops
Grandpa.

Greats have chosen a selection of confusing or babyish names, but will be ‘Granny firstname’ ‘Nanna firstname’ Grandpa firstname’ etc for ease.

JumparooSavedMyLife · 20/11/2021 23:12

Nana and grandad and grandma and gramps. They chose. I think gramps sounds weird I don't use it to refer to my fil, I say grandad name. If it was up to me our children would have 2 x nana and grandad with their name, we used surnames with our grandparent's.

When I was a kid my mum's parents were called nanna and poppa high as they lived at the top of a block of flats and my dad's parents were nanna and poppa low as they lived in a house Grin
MrsSkimpole · 20/11/2021 23:20

Granny and Grandpa

Grandma and Bumpy (though that's because I have always called my dad Bumpy - no idea why).

The only thing any of us was dead set on is that nobody was going to be Nanna/Nana/Nanny. Anything else would have been ok.

SE13Mummy · 21/11/2021 00:30

My DCs have a Grandma, Grandpa, Granny and Grandad. The grandparents chose their own grandparents names when DC1 was born (first child on both sides of the family).
