Just that! Is it Nan, pop, gran, grandad etc..? And who decides what names? Has it caused any problems?

Our parents had a summit about it — I seem to remember MiL wanted to be ‘Nana’, which I can’t abide, but her call (or so I thought…) — but DS has called all four by abbreviations of their first names since toddlerhood, and would not be swayed.

Nanny and Gaga for in laws (DD1 created the latter). Grandma for my mum. Grandad for my dad and then his partner’s name for her - didn’t want to add confusion, but DD1 absolutely sees her as a fifth grandparent.

DD2 will just have to go along with what’s happened organically!

Nanny and grandad. It wouldn’t have been my first choice, but DS has cousins who call PIL that. It could be worse!

I'm a grandmother and it was what the parents called us. Our GC have 6 grandparents and we are all Grandma / Grandad Christian name. Two of the grandmothers have the same name but nobody seems to get confused .

I have to admit I cringe when I hear kids say nanny or grandad and then the first name - my kids it's just nanny and grandad I don't see the need for them to use a first name as well

yikesanotherbooboo · 21/11/2021 06:53

Nana and Grandad
Granny and Taid
Names chosen by the GPs.

Monkeytennis97 · 21/11/2021 07:02

DPs are grandma and grandad (no name). DPiLs are nanny and grandad (no name added). DS is in his 20s calls DMiL nan now.

bunnytheegghunter · 21/11/2021 08:34

Nan and grandad for my parents and nanna and gramps for his parents, their choice. My parents were already grandparents and the other children called them Nan and grandad. Growing up we called both sets of their parents Nan and grandad surname. ex H grandparents were also Nan and grandad, but his mum wanted to be called something different to mine 🙄

Thanks, everyone! Good to see there is not much conflict within families when choosing titles! Both sets of grandparents want to be called the same in my family, so we'll have to find a way of distinguishing them.

My parents are Nannie & Grandad
His parents... never really earned the titles by being pretty shit. Our son wanted dh's mother and called her by her name (they were absent for years). I often use dads mum/dad/stepdad if talking to kids about them.

They can choose so long as not daft. Dh's mum and stepdad tried to use grandy and gramps but it didn't take.

Honestly, my experience suggests that however long you spend planning distinguishing grandparent titles, your child didn’t get the memo and will go his or her own sweet way.

Nanny and grandad (DH parents)

Nanna and Grampie (my mum and husband)

Grandad and ‘firstname’ (my dad and wife)

Workyticket · 21/11/2021 11:02

Nana and Granda on my side

Grandma and Grandad on dh side

TheCreamCaker · 21/11/2021 11:15

My Grandchildren call me Mammar (that's how they spell it anyway) and my husband Grandad. They call their other grandparents the same.

Bobholll · 21/11/2021 13:01

My mum wanted to be Granny like her mum. But DD1 couldn’t say Granny & instead called her Nanny & unfortunately for my mum it’s stuck 🙈😂 both DD’s now call her this!

We’ve otherwise got Nana, Grandad & Grandpa. Different names for each one. It was a mix of us & the grandparents who chose I think. On my in-laws side, they have older grandkids so the names were in place before we had kids!

crimblecrumbles · 21/11/2021 13:18

My MIL wanted to be Nanna or Nanny but I hate both and said no. We don't see her very often but we refer to her as Granny. My mum was supposed to be Granny too but DD calls her Grrrr. We wanted my dad to be Grumps (because he is grumpy!!) but DD has decided to call him Papa

jupitermars1345 · 21/11/2021 13:52

Nanny and grandad
Nanny

Ladylalaboo1 · 21/11/2021 14:06

My parents are Nanny and grandad ( was nana and grandad but my 1st child started calling her nanny and it's stuck) and my partners parents are grandma and pops ( they chose this) works fine for us 😊

bunnybopbop · 21/11/2021 14:47

For my DD my parents are Nana and Pops

We are NC with DHs mum so she doesn't have a name.

DHs dad and step mum are nanny (name) and grandad

Whatever flows really!
