For those of us being hammered by bugs

Hello

I wondered if we could have a general chat, handhold, tips thread for those of us being hammered by bugs just now.

I have two children, I also have fairly severe health anxiety focused on them.

We have had colds, chest infections, tonscilitis. Conjunctivitis, norovirus, poisoning, and that's just October.

They have a good diet. Im trying to continue groups etc. I've ordered sambucol on a friend recommended basis.

Any other tips.

A good multi vitamin that includes zinc and vitamin D.
For yourself as well, I swear by mouth wash twice a day making sure it hits the back of your throat and doing nasal rinses as soon as you get any symptoms of having a cold.

stripetop · 28/10/2021 21:05

Thank you. Good tip.

I am such an arse. They were so so unwell I completely forgot about me. Ended up being taken in with pleurisy, dislocated ribs from coughing and chest infection. I just go onto autopilot. But learnt the hard way who looks after them if I'm not here.

@CelloYouveGotABass is there a particular one you recommend. I use the halibro one just now. Two and baby.

No words of wisdom! But I’m so fed up of them too. I can’t actually remember the last time DD (12months) was well 😢 not in the last 6weeks anyways! Currently listening to her coughing and spluttering away.

Motherland101 · 28/10/2021 22:54

No tips I'm afraid but here for a hand hold, OP! Toddler DS (21m) has been poorly since he started nursery this summer, much much worse since September. it's literally back to back V&D, chest infection, coughing, fever. And I'm catching everything too and just feel so unhealthy, demotivated and physically exhausted. He's having multivitamin liquid daily, good diet, lots of outdoor exercise, but would be happy for age appropriate tips on how to boost his immune system. I've kind of made peace with the fact that it is what it is, but then having regular bouts of guilt and self-doubt that maybe I'm not doing enough to keep him healthy, not finding the right supplements for him etc :/

Rainallnight · 28/10/2021 23:01

I am here for this thread!

I’m asthmatic and I’ve just been extremely poorly with that and bronchitis that started off as three year old DS’s cold.

I can’t take a whole winter of this.

I’ve been looking up tips online and mostly they say wash your hands and don’t kiss your slobbery toddler!

He already takes a multi vitamin. His diet is ok for fruit though he could definitely do with more veg.

Is there anything else I could be doing?!

GoldenOmber · 28/10/2021 23:05

We have had: cold, cold, HFM, cold, some hellish norovirus type thing, cold again. And it’s not even sodding November yet. Taking the approach that there’s not much we can do except ride it out.

Opalfeet · 28/10/2021 23:55

We have something new every week since march inc norovirus and croup. I'm so tired of it now and wandering if it will ever stop. 😭

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 29/10/2021 00:02

We have been ill every week since about June. Constant coughs / colds interspersed with 3 stomach bugs and a bout of hand foot and mouth. Regular visitor to our local pcr test site Blush

Both kids have both transferred the colds between them, but managed to contain 2 of the stomach bugs to one and HFM to one. I’ve had all the colds too

We’re not doing anything extra like vitamins, but we are scrupulous about hand washing, and during HFM I did ask toddler not to kiss the baby until he was out of the contagious phase

I’m trying to look on the positive side, in that we must be building up lots of immunity to various bugs… I wish they would stop now though !

Chocolatetrifle · 29/10/2021 08:06

I can sympathise with all of this. I have two DS, 4 and 22 months, we've had croup, tonsillitis 3 times, norovirus, hand foot and mouth, it's exhausting and relentless. We've had two weeks of no illnesses now and I'm truly to be hopeful we have had the worst of it. It's had me in tears at some points.
Hope all of your DC feel better soon.

Abitlost2 · 29/10/2021 08:12

Outside as much as possible, its dcs being inside all together that makes them catch every virus going. My dcs never went to creche / nursery but if they did I would push them to bring them out in fresh air more. Some places only get them out for an hour a day, that is nothing if they are there a full day.

Abitlost2 · 29/10/2021 08:18

My kids are rarely ill and i swear it's because they go outside a lot and were all breastfed.
Its also pure luck and the fact that bugs are back with a vengence this year. Also totally echo a pp zinc and rincing mouth out with antibacterial mouthwash to avoid tonsillitis turning bacterial.

needtogetfit21 · 29/10/2021 08:35

Sambucol is very good! We recently switched to the gummy version but they aren't nearly as effective so now we've ordered the immune version it's age 3 and up

Opalfeet · 29/10/2021 09:57

@Abitlost2 more likely because they're not at nursery 🙄sorry.

It doesn't really make any difference if they go outside for more hours because they'll still be inside passing on germs.

And the b fed thing, sorry 🙄 again

WoolyMammoth55 · 29/10/2021 10:04

OMG this is us! 4yo just started reception and 9 month old getting everything he brings back... 1st week of October DS1 had cough, fever, exhaustion - negative PCR, GP said "another virus". Well enough for school 2nd week but the baby had it then. Week 3 he was off all week with 5 full days of projectile vomiting - there is no surface in my home I haven't swabbed puke off... Half term this week and I've got baby projectile puking, yesterday was day 6! GP assessed by phone and said "viral gastroenteritis, nothing to do if still taking fluids" so we are toughing it out.

I'm on my knees and can't fathom how we are going to get through the next 4 dark cold months at this rate. :(

stripetop · 29/10/2021 10:07

Morning, sorry so many of us are facing this.

It's the liquid sambucol I've ordered.

Yeah so mine are farm kids, live outside, still get everything.

Eldest goes to a rural playgroup two hours a week, but often seems to be no link.

Both woken up again snotty today. Really, really tired of this now. In all seriousness considering imposing a two week lockdown of my own to try and get them back to health to face the rest of this winter.

TreesoftheField · 29/10/2021 10:11

Urgh. We've had chickenpox, sickness bug and now covid for half term. They've had 20 days off school and nursery in 2 months between 2 kids. My employer is so far being sympathetic but I really feel I'm taking the piss.

Opalfeet · 29/10/2021 10:12

Sambucol sounds good, but I'm wondering what's in it that's not in a vit c supplement

Make sure to give the winter dose of sambucol

You have my sympathies it's really shit. My 2.5yo has suffered non stop since beg of august. Literally had as many good days as I can count on one hand. Now both dc are Covid positive. It never rains , it bloody pours

AnimalCrossingHere · 29/10/2021 10:17

Anyone with an older child, is this normal for Oct or worse this year than normal?

Also on my knees but I have just the one so no previous years to compare against.

Rainallnight · 29/10/2021 10:18

It feels worse this year.

stripetop · 29/10/2021 10:19

Just reading the sambucol, winter dose 10ml. That's fine. Baby is 11 months. Says one and over. Anyone given younger? Wondered about a half dose.

That's shit @needtogetfit21 it's the same here. I'm scared to arrange or book anything because we won't make it

OP posts:
stripetop · 29/10/2021 10:19

Feels worse for sure

Madamswearsalot · 29/10/2021 10:22

I'm here for a vent! 8 Yr dd and 4 Yr ds are taking it in turns - one week its one, next week its the other. Then DH catches everything. Both DC currently starting another round of snot with occasional cough which has got me twitched and DH is sneezing up a storm too.

Arrrrrggggghhhhh! We have plans, and work and living to do!

needtogetfit21 · 29/10/2021 10:23

@Opalfeet

Sambucol sounds good, but I'm wondering what's in it that's not in a vit c supplement
It's liquid so easy to give to children who can't take tablets, and the immune version contains zinc too
