DS A&E am I being mad

My DD aged 3 woke up at 11pm last night screaming in pain because her leg hurt - specifically her
Shin bone. She has had a few infections recently and a persistent low-grade fever for a couple of weeks despite currently being on amoxicillin.

I googled thinking it's probably growing pains and wanted to see what I could do to help her but lots of the results came up with leukaemia. My mum and nana both died from leukaemia so I'm extremely sensitive about it but still I wonder if I'm being mad as I'm currently sitting in A&E as want her to have a blood test. For context, the leukaemia mum and nana had was extremely aggressive so their treatment began each time within an hour of diagnosis.

I don't want to me the mad mum hauling ds in to hospital when she should
Be swimming and enjoying her weekend but I'm terrified. Please help me.

If your child is well enough to go swimming then she doesn’t need to be at a and e. At the most you need an appointment with the GP.

Do you have health anxiety?

If your child is fine now, why wouldn't you just make an appointment with the gp?

I think with your family history you are right to be there. Maybe for someone else without a clear family history of highly aggressive leukaemia, this would be excessive, but with that it seems quite sensible.

It might be a bone infection. Still serious but not as horrible as leukaemia.
I really hope all is ok but you've done the right thing taking her xx

It's completely inappropriate to take her to A&E. No wonder the NHS is on its knees.

I don’t think OP said her dd had been swimming? She said that’s what she would normally be doing at a weekend.

OP is she still in extreme pain? Or did it wear off?

I wonder if the leg pain could be a side effect of the amoxicillin? Some antibiotics can cause bone or muscle/tendon pain. Some can cause raised tempts too I think. I think she needs to be checked over.

I totally get why you would be so worried about leukaemia and want reassurance. I’d have probably phoned 111 but you know your DD and what she‘s like at the moment so it’s hard to say. I hope you get some answers and your mind is put at rest.

My toddler once had a limp and a temperature at the same time, we were told by the consultant he was seeing for another issue to never ignore it even though thankfully he didnt have leukemia. I wouldnt go to A&E myself but Im in an area where I can normally get a GP appt within a day or so

Yes because someone took an unwell child with worrying symptoms to A&E the nhs is on its knees

When my toddler had a limp we were sent to A&E by the GP - leg pains and limps can be more serious in children and may require an X-ray which obviously have to be done in hospital. I can totally empathise with your anxiety, though chances are she’s fine so if you can’t be seen today then please don’t panic too much.

I hate all this "it's people like you bringing the NHS to its knees" so nothing to do with underfunding and a pandemic then? Or obesity or smokers/drinkers? It's all down to concerned mums and their 3 year olds?

The NHS is on its knees due to lack of funding and because it is understaffed, not due to people who are entitled to using it doing so.

Highly unlikely to be anything but you're right to check everything out. Mother's intuition is important to doctors.

YANBU at all, with that family history.
Flowers and everything crossed it’s nothing serious. We were fast tracked via GP for similarly aged dd who developed a sudden limp. It eventually transpired she’d swapped a shoe at nursery.

How caring of you. The NHS is ‘on its knees’ for many reasons, this isn’t one of them.

I think with that history you're entirely right to want her seen quickly. Ideally that would be at a GP on Monday morning, but with the way things are with GPs and getting subsequent appointments for things like blood tests I don't blame you for being at A & E

It could be an infection. A few years ago I was woken up by pains in my shins so bad I had to crawl into my friends room where I was staying. It managed to subside enough for me to get home and I went to the GP. I had two viral infections and ABs sorted me out.

It could be anything
I had really bad shin pains as a child and it was put down as growing pains (I did make 5ft10!)
The other thing that can cause it is low vitamin D, I had crippling shin pain worse at night and my vitamin d was incredibly low Thanks

@Flufferty I disagree utterly, and I think your comment is incredibly mean spirited given the circumstances. Her daughter was screaming in pain and she has a family history of leukaemia. A and E is entirely appropriate.

OP I would have done exactly the same thing. Hope you and your daughter are ok.

I can’t believe how horrible some people are on here! Tonight A&E will post likely be filled with drunks! And this lady is genuinely worried about her little 3 year old with a family history to boot! OP I hope it gos well in A&E and your little girl is ok, my little girl used to suffer with leg pain and I was worried just like you, it turned out to be growing pains Flowers

The NHS is on its knees due to poor funding, poor use of funds and wastage. Not because parents use a faculty that we all pay for.
