Hi everyone,
im soooo upset!!! i have entered my daughter in the huggies smiler of the year competition and i overheard someone calling my daughter a HALF BREED! and that no one would vote her as she is not white, i was confident at first as i do think she is gorgeous but hearing that!!!
how could someone say that!! and the worst part is i know that person and that person speaks to me all lovely to my face.
please help and vote as i feel that no one will vote now!

she is absolutely gorgeous! i have voted for her.

you will get people making ridiculous comments like this from time to time. your job is to bring your daughter up to feel happy and confident in herself, proud to be who she is.

you have of course opened her up to these sorts of comments by entering her into this competition. you maybe just didn't expect negative comments. be strong she's beautiful!

thelittleElf · 08/12/2007 22:33

Thats bloody disgracful! Am bloody angry for you . I have voted for her

There is a woman at my toddler group who is lovely to me but has called my kids racist names behind my back and says that she would never let people like that in her house. Here are some links to childrens books with a positive message about being mixed. Your baby is really cute but even if she was the ugliest baby who ever lived then that is not an excuse to make racist comments about her.

double the love
family book
red blue I like you

black white just right

the colour of us

we're different, we're the same

here is an article from the times about mixed race children

Its a wonderful thing being able to draw on 2 cultures and my kids have a much nicer life than the children of narrow minded biggots who have never been outside the square mile in which they were born.

toytownmum · 08/12/2007 23:03

Voted

She is gorgeous

Acinonyx · 08/12/2007 23:03

I'm a half-breed myself - isn't it amazing what people say when they think you can't hear them? It's very shocking - I know.

That woman is trash. Don't let it get to you.

Cashncarry · 08/12/2007 23:09

Mommy2007 - I'm going to get flamed for this but I think you're attacking this problem entirely the wrong way. Yes, I'm sure your daughter is quite gorgeous and that she truly deserves to win this comp (haven't clicked on the link btw) but how is any of us voting for her actually going to change your "friend's" attitude?

I think it would be more constructive for you to face up to this person and ask her why she would say such a bigoted thing about anyone, let alone a child. After all, one day she won't be saying it about her but to her.

Having been subject to this kind of racism myself, I would be incensed beyond belief if my DD was subjected to it - frankly, a competition would be the last thing on my mind...

sorry had to dash off mom came round to see me as i had left a text on her phone about the incident.
she also said the same that i should confront her. your right maybe naomi winning the competition will not change the persons attitude her opinion will stay the same no matter what, and i am so glad that there are such kind supportive people like the people who have took the time to read, comment and feel what i'm feeling and offer advice and thankyou for voting.

the part that really hurts about it all is that she is a close friend and to hear such a thing does hurt.

professorplum thankyou for the links.

well they didnt stop me did they!wouldnt normally but under the circumstances....

amytheearwaxbanisher · 09/12/2007 00:52

...awaits banning order....

Cashncarry · 09/12/2007 00:53

Yes but her attitude should change and she should be apologising profusely to you not telling you to confront her on the issue. why is she such a close friend if she has such a skewed perception of what is normal? She needs a metaphorical kick in the arse if you ask me

I don't mean to upset you - I just get very very angry when I think people are "accepting" of prejudice, particularly for our kids. I always shudder at the thought of my DD having to face what I had to as a child so get on my soapbox on a regular basis in the hope that it will prevent it! If you think you're hurt at hearing that phrase, imagine how your DD will feel if your friend's DC says it to her face when she's older?

Go on, get angry and tell her where to go!

mommy2007 · 09/12/2007 01:03

oh no not accepting it at all, and those who do wrong it all come back to them in the end!!
skin colour is just on the outside whats matter is what on the inside. y are people so prejudice??!!! its just sad how the world still has people with that frame of min. naomi's aunt is a model and she said it is still tough now as there is still so much racism out there. www.themadavis.co.uk

I know you said it is wrong but i so want my little girl to at least reach the 12 finalists so it can shut her face.

thanks for the votes.
