My DS is 5 1/2 months and we'll be starting soon so just wondered: what's the first food you introduced to your baby?

I have an older DS and I believe it was avocado but I don't think I can properly remember.

Carrot sticks, broccoli florets and toast fingers on day 1.
Day 2 she had chilli con carne and wolfed it down!
She has had whatever we ate since (BLW).

Baby porridge oats mixed with breast milk. I think i tried weaning them early in the misguided hope they might actually sleep longer than 2 hours a stretch at night. They didn't.

DockOTheBay · 12/10/2021 06:42

Butternut squash puree. Easy to make, very very smooth and sweet

Mashed potato and some avocado

Twizbe · 12/10/2021 06:44

Baby rice as advise by our dietician - but he was 4 months so a bit different.

She also told us to start with breakfast as you're always at home.

Technically DD started with cucumber at 5 months when she stole it from my plate. After that we did breakfast with baby porridge

My baby is 5 1/2 months aswell and we started this week weaning his first thing was baby porridge mixed with formula then the next day I tried broccoli purée, I got the annabel karmel weaning books and there's loads of great ideas in it

Dollywilde · 12/10/2021 06:45

Puréed carrot.

MiL marvelled at the difference between the weaning advice now and when DH (35) was small. She couldn’t get her head around how DD had eaten courgette before she’d ever had a taste of a rusk Grin

Ginfilledcats · 12/10/2021 06:47

Broccoli florets age 6m - we've done BLW and loved it!

R00tat00tt00t · 12/10/2021 06:47

Stewed apples mixed with a little bit of baby rice. Little face was a picture and still loves sour things now.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 12/10/2021 06:49

Pureed peas, she loves peas.

Fridafever · 12/10/2021 06:49

Broccoli florets and raspberries. Sticks of mango I think too. I loved weaning!

Pascha · 12/10/2021 06:51

Ds1 nicked a green bean off my plate at 5 months. Technically though, I think the first food was probably some cooked carrot or maybe banana? He was fairly reluctant to eat anything at all really til about 10 k on nths when he suddenly switched on to it.

Ds2 grabbed a breadstick at pizza hut and never looked back...

PanicBuyingSprouts · 12/10/2021 06:52

DC1 apple purée, lovingly prepared abs worried over.

DC2 a sandwich that she managed to grab abs stuff in her mouth.

CelloYouveGotABass · 12/10/2021 06:55

Weetabix!

SkankingMopoke · 12/10/2021 07:03

DD1: floret of broccoli stolen from my plate. We started cooking without salt the following day, with a bit of whatever we were having placed onto her highchair tray. She was 5.5mo.
DD2: floret of broccoli and a chunk of roast chicken, also stolen from a plate at 5.5mo (we're clearly slow learners!).

They are 7 and 5yo now, and still both love broccoli!

yikesanotherbooboo · 12/10/2021 07:07

I know that with my older DC it was purées as they were weaned at 4 months but my youngest was a baby with the more up to date advice of waiting until they were six months. He is 20 now.Obviously he did not require purées , I gave him what we were eating , cooked it without salt and squashed it a bit if it looked hard to manage. He was happy to have yoghurt etc spooned in and did his best to stuff things in his mouth himself. For breakfast he would have had a spot of weetabix or porridge followed after the school run by an egg in some form , lunch was soup or bits and pieces , usually toast based eg cheese or ham or sardines etc, evening meal whatever the older ones were eating , often pasta and tom sauce, salmon and veg, etc.

Youcancallmeval · 12/10/2021 07:11

Carrot or pear I think. I was so bloody PFB I had a list of all fruit and veg and ticked them off as she tried them.

DaxtheDestroyer · 12/10/2021 07:13

Dc1 - rice cakes
Dc2 - cucumber sticks
Dc3 - chilli chicken pasta Hmm

I did BLW with all of them

tiggerwhocamefortea · 12/10/2021 07:29

The advice is to start with puréed veg for 2 weeks then add puréed fruit

You can get a free Ella's kitchen weaning book from boots

Surprised about the amount of "solid" food people give their babies from day 1 as they generally need to build up the chewing action so I would have thought toast would be a bit much

Eri21 · 12/10/2021 07:45

I think the very first one was mashed banana.

Parker231 · 12/10/2021 07:47

One of the pouches or jars of puréed fruit. We worked through every variety in the pouches and jars and moved through the age ranges. DT’s loved them.

If you wean at 6 months, babies don't need any puréed food at all. They build up the chewing action just as well on solid food.
ajja2021 · 12/10/2021 07:54

First attempts of weaning was with baby rice, baby porridge etc

I did a mix of traditional and blw so introduced some brocolli and carrots

Chelyanne · 12/10/2021 08:10

Porridge has always been 1st.
At the purée stage I did vegetables, always made a mix rather than individuals ones.
I would buy the pots/pouches of fruit purée.

This isn’t the advice at all. From 6-months they can eat anything, with the only exceptions being salt, whole nuts and honey (OP - look at the NHS guidelines for accurate information).

Just serve what you eat. My DD (now 7-month) started with scrambled eggs and toast with avocado. I’ve absolutely loved weaning and she really enjoys her food. It gets very messy though!! Grin
