Weaning - What was the first food you me gave your child?

My DS is 5 1/2 months and we'll be starting soon so just wondered: what's the first food you introduced to your baby?

I have an older DS and I believe it was avocado but I don't think I can properly remember.

Baby muesli.

OvertiredOverthinker · 12/10/2021 10:42

@Dollywilde

Puréed carrot.

MiL marvelled at the difference between the weaning advice now and when DH (35) was small. She couldn’t get her head around how DD had eaten courgette before she’d ever had a taste of a rusk Grin

This made me laugh, as you’ve just described my mother Grin She was a bit bemused we started off giving DD veg! If I had a pound for every time I heard “Bless her! Give her some rusk mixed with a bit of milk…or a baby pudding!” Otherwise mum’s been very chilled about our approach to parenting but she’s really got a bee in her bonnet about the weaning!

DS1 had organic baby porridge.

DS2 was given a nibble of Grandad's white magnum 🙄 helped himself to various food off my plate and was given baby porridge the next day.

Totally ignorant question here: Those of you saying their DC's first foods were broccoli florets, cucumber or other solid things (as opposed to purées etc), how did your DC's deal with them, as presumably they had no/few teeth? Did they just suck/gum?
Yep, those gums are hard! Both DC had broccoli and carrots as first food. Cooked just a little softer than we would normally but otherwise solid. Mine got their first tooth at 13 and 11 months respectively so needed to be adept at chewing with their gums.
@canyoutoleratethis - it was BLW being messy which put me off and why I used pouches and jars.
Hmm
Babies and children are going to make mess. It’s inevitable

Parker231 · 12/10/2021 11:26

CuteGirls - I found pouches and jars easy so used them. DT’s now eat everything and anything.

ladygindiva · 12/10/2021 11:26

Anecdata I know, but for those that worry their approach to weaning will affect their child's mentality to food I have to counter by saying I have twins, both weaned the same, pretty much blw, and one is fussy as hell and the other ears just about anything, she'd eat food out of the bin given half a chance!

ladygindiva · 12/10/2021 11:27

My child was stealing food off our plates for ages before we started proper weaning around six months. She definitely had tastes of stolen avocado, hummus, broccoli, pita bread etc before we were planning to start weaning. I basically went by the idea that if she could pick the food up and put it in her mouth, I wasn’t going to stop her.

When we started weaning properly, I think we gave her avocado, eggs and toast for her first food. Focused on sour/bitter veg with eggs/fish/meat for the first few weeks. Did BLW. I loved weaning. Had done a first aid course and a weaning course so never felt that worried about gagging etc. She barely did gag anyway, so think we got lucky there. We ate the same foods mostly and ate together and even before weaning she always sat with us while we were eating, so think that really helped her understand the process of eating.

Now she is almost three and is a great eater, which I hope lasts.

PolytheneRam · 12/10/2021 11:47

Roast chicken dinner. He loved it.

He's 21 months now and much more picky, sadly.

Twizbe · 12/10/2021 16:02

@CuteGirlsWatchMeEatEther yep, but as I'm the one who has to clear it up, I decide where the mess line is.

Let's not judge other parents for how they choose to wean.

I also did purées with a bit of non messy finger food.

With my eldest we had to do purées from pouches as well.

CuteGirlsWatchMeEatEther · 12/10/2021 17:09

@Parker231 sorry I didn’t mean to sound bitchy and judgey

burritofan · 12/10/2021 17:11

The first thing I gave her was avocado toast. The first thing she ate as sourdough pizza nicked off my plate when I wasn’t paying attention Grin – she’s still a pizza hound

DriftGames · 12/10/2021 17:12

Scrambled egg on toast! She's almost 2 now and we're having katsu curry for dinner. BLW is brilliant.

GoodnightGrandma · 12/10/2021 17:14

Baby rice.

Parker231 · 12/10/2021 17:20

CuteGirls - no problem. For me it was an easy decision. Didn’t want the mess of blw so never considered it and found it easier to buy a trolley load of pouches and jars with lovely sounding names.

pinklillie · 12/10/2021 17:33

Broccoli and then Avocado and courgette. We followed the How to Wean your Baby book by Charlotte Stirling Reed. He didn't eat a lot to start with but at 9 months now is eating lots and lots of variety of vegetables even Kale and cabbage and the bitter ones too. I followed it for the first month or so and then made meals I know he liked and froze them in small portions it's been great. I felt so overwhelmed at first but in to the swing of it now

PanicBuyingSprouts · 12/10/2021 17:37

Carrot or pear I think. I was so bloody PFB I had a list of all fruit and veg and ticked them off as she tried them. That’s a serious case of PFB going in there Grin

Blackmagicqueen · 12/10/2021 17:44

Dc1 pureed carrot (although dh argues it was a brownie bite he tried to swipe) dc2 pureed sweet potato,

Blackmagicqueen · 12/10/2021 17:46

@PanicBuyingSprouts i ticked them off too amd wrote lists of baby meals liked! 🤭

Vinorosso74 · 12/10/2021 17:52

Broccoli, carrot and courgette sticks. We also did BLW. First thing she nearly ate was at a wedding a few days beforehand and she nearly swiped the lamb dish off DP's plate.

RoSEbuds6 · 12/10/2021 17:56

We did BLW too, 13.5 years ago and DD ate a broccoli floret first I think. Used to love em (now not so much!). I found that the more effort I made, the less she liked the food. She never gagged much, and always ate well. I never really stressed about it to be honest.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 12/10/2021 17:58

I am marvelling at your organisation skills and dedication there @Blackmagicqueen!

KurtWilde · 12/10/2021 18:05

Rusks mixed with breast milk. I started at 4 months. As soon as they were used to solids I moved on to whatever we were eating.

RandomDent · 12/10/2021 18:09

With my second, it was a sausage he whipped out of my hand Grin
