Weaning - What was the first food you me gave your child?

My DS is 5 1/2 months and we'll be starting soon so just wondered: what's the first food you introduced to your baby?

I have an older DS and I believe it was avocado but I don't think I can properly remember.

Pear if I recall.

Paripale · 12/10/2021 08:13

Apple - but this was out of my hands as she swiped one I was eating and started gumming down on it at 5 months😂!

Her first official meal at 6 months was puréed sweet potato.

canyoutoleratethis · 12/10/2021 08:17

@tiggerwhocamefortea

The advice is to start with puréed veg for 2 weeks then add puréed fruit

You can get a free Ella's kitchen weaning book from boots

Surprised about the amount of "solid" food people give their babies from day 1 as they generally need to build up the chewing action so I would have thought toast would be a bit much

Oh and don’t use Ella’s Kitchen - she only wants to make money off of you and is no authority on weaning guidelines whatsoever! Just serve normal food and give your baby time and space to explore and learn. It’s supposed to be fun, so try not to add any pressure. Eating is a skill like any other and each baby will get there in their own time.

If you're doing BLW you don't give any pureed food. Its finger foods from the start
olidora63 · 12/10/2021 08:17

Porridge mixed with fruit purée ! Would have been too worried about choking to give toast etc .Would want to be certain about their ability to chew and swallow.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 12/10/2021 08:24

God I wish this had been my experience. All these babies are amazing!
My daughter is 19mths and still eats sod all.

I saw a story on here about someone going on a date with a bloke who only ate purée because he never transitioned from baby food and I have visions of that being my DD Sad.

I think her first food was probably baby rice. Which of course she wouldn't eat.

ladygindiva · 12/10/2021 08:30

Mashed sweet potato. All 3 of mine loved it. They all loathed baby rice 🤣

Parker231 · 12/10/2021 08:39

@canyoutoleratethis - it was BLW being messy which put me off and why I used pouches and jars.

DoraDont · 12/10/2021 08:47

Bit of baby porridge for a few days, then broccoli, carrots, toast soldiers that she gummed and sucked to death.

LaMadrilena · 12/10/2021 09:35

Totally ignorant question here: Those of you saying their DC's first foods were broccoli florets, cucumber or other solid things (as opposed to purées etc), how did your DC's deal with them, as presumably they had no/few teeth? Did they just suck/gum?

My DD is 4.5 months and tbh weaning is terrifying me, I can't get the risk of choking out of my head!

Fridafever · 12/10/2021 09:38

Yes they just gum at them with their hard little gums it’s amazing.

nameisnotimportant · 12/10/2021 09:42

We did baby led weaning. Did carrots then broccolli, then potato. I started with savoury stuff first and then introduced sweet.

MintyCedric · 12/10/2021 09:54

Baby rice and milk the first few times, then mixed in pureed carrots from papa's allotment.

She was about 4.5 months, went onto finger foods at about 6/7 month.

I absolutely loved the weaning stage...so much fun seeing her reactions to different foods 🙂.

canyoutoleratethis · 12/10/2021 09:55

@LaMadrilena you do not need teeth to chew. The chewing takes place at the back/side, and very few children have teeth there until well past the age of one (think about how you chew - you don’t use your front teeth, so neither does baby). Their gums are very strong and will handle any food without trouble. To start with they’ll probably just suck, but my LO is chewing everything now at 7-months

olderthanyouthink · 12/10/2021 09:57

@PissedOffNeighbour22 DD is nearly 3 and was BLWed, ate barely anything till I got pregnant and BM dried up (and was just over 2) but she still eats the bare minimum. She also has so many sensory issues I'm glad I never started with purée in retrospect but I think that was my issue as a child, I was on purée/mashed for a loooong time. Do you think texture is what bothers your DD?

@LaMadrilena has your baby not taken to chewing your fingers? Their gums are plenty hard enough to chew a lot of food, most kids don't even have all their molars by 2/3 years but they can't eat normal food just fine

BertieBotts · 12/10/2021 10:03

Cucumber and toast DS1

Cucumber and peppers DS2, but I think the first thing he ate was some pasta with egg.

This is really not true and very outdated information.
motherofawhirlwind · 12/10/2021 10:13

Gave? Baby rice
Stole? Tuna mayo sandwich (crust)

LaMadrilena · 12/10/2021 10:15

@olderthanyouthink @canyoutoleratethis Yes, chewing my hand is her favourite activity! It's like she's tackling a particularly tasty pork chop!

You're right, her gums are very hard. I guess I just thought that teeth also grip as they chew, and I worry that her slippy gums will cause something to shoot down her throat. PFB paranoia, I know!

merryhouse · 12/10/2021 10:18

Baby rice (because it was there).

I don't recommend it.

Second child was a lot less picky, though I realise this is anecdata Grin

OldTinHat · 12/10/2021 10:20

Baby rice with breast milk.

Ellarain · 12/10/2021 10:23

olderthanyouthink · 12/10/2021 10:36

@LaMadrilena if something does do too far back they are usually very good at gagging it out, DD used to vomit easily so she gagged and puked it out 🤦‍♀️ Try and find a baby first did course, it might help you feel more confident if you know what to do if it happens

OvertiredOverthinker · 12/10/2021 10:37

We’ve recently started weaning and gone with the veg first approach for the first two weeks, so things like carrot, broccoli, sweet potato etc. all puréed. We’ve now started introducing sweet stuff too, so banana mixed up with DD’s milk, apple, pear etc. Banana and sweet potato have been her favourites so far!

We’ve been following Ella’s Kitchen…DH came home with the free guide from Boots and I think I would have been a bit lost without it, to be honest! It’s got some great recipes that I’m looking forward to trying and a section on introducing texture. I’m a bit of an anxious FTM and have preferred starting on the purées Smile

Cantstopthewaves · 12/10/2021 10:39

Baby porridge and pureed pear.
Dc were also fans of ( low salt&sugar) baked beansBlush
