And did they sleep better or worse? In 2 minds when to make the transition!

When they climb out, it’s time. I put the bed against the wall and threw a duvet/pillows on the floor the other side in case she fell out 🤣

Fitforforty · 28/06/2021 20:24

Mine never really slept in the cot. They moved into their own bed before the age of 2. Made no difference to sleep.

Bed’s shouldn’t be against the wall as there is a danger of the child becoming trapped.

DD is 20 months and moved from a cot to a toddler bed on Friday. She's sleeping much better, she loves her big girl bed and quilt.

AegonT · 28/06/2021 20:27

My DD wasn't a climber so we waited till she turned 3. Her sleep was the same - she never got out without asking!

Trinxsy · 28/06/2021 20:31

DS was about 15 months I think...he had a tendency to play with his poo in the night because he was bored. Took the side down so he can play with books etc...no more incidents lol

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 28/06/2021 20:32

Just before he turned 3. He was happy in his cot and didn’t try to climb out. The change was prompted by him going dry overnight and I felt it was unfair to remove his nappies if he couldn’t get to a potty in the night. We had a spate of him coming out of his room early but it passed fairly quickly with the help of a “magic light” which comes on to indicate it’s morning, same way a Gro Clock works.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 28/06/2021 20:33

Just to add….it took him about 2 months to realise he could get out of bed, before we had a few weeks of escaping!

Winkywonkydonkey · 28/06/2021 20:34

14 months both times, they both hated the cot and I was sick of either leaning over the stupid thing or getting in there with them. They haven't slept better, both are awful sleepers, they just want to be close to me, which is lovely...if I had a 9 ft bed.

Changethetoner · 28/06/2021 20:37

On their third birthday. Took the bars off, and voila, it became a toddler bed. They slept in this bed until they were seven. (small/average size child). We definitely got value for money with that cotbed. And no, they never attempted to climb out of it in the first three years.

MeadowHay · 28/06/2021 20:38

My DD has just turned 3 and still sleeps in a cot bed with the sides up. The sides on this cot are pretty high and she's never really attempted to climb out of it. She's a generally good sleeper so am in no rush at all to change anything about her sleep routines that may jeopardise that. Only issue is that I'm pregnant and have PGP so I'm not sure if I will be able to lift her in and out of it all the way through my pregnancy as it already feels a bit tricky at 26 weeks.

Siennabear · 28/06/2021 20:41

My dd recently asked to sleep in her bed rather than her cot next to me. I had left it was she still woke quite a lot in the night and usually ended up in with me. Also we are in an attic extension so didn’t want to be bed swapping and up and down in the night.

I have to say it was the best thing ever. She had maybe a week of calling for me at 4am but since then she sleeps all night in her bed, no wake ups and I have to wake her to get up at 8 every morning. She absolutely loves her sleep. It took a while but finally sleeping through. She’s 3 next month. I think when she was in her cot she was waking herself where there wasn’t enough room and perhaps we disturbed her.

Give it a try , you can always go back to the cot.

3 year old son still in his cot. He loves his cot, sleeps well me doesn't try to get out even though he could. In no rush.

My daughter on the other hand hated her cot so never ever slept in it. She was in bed with me until 4 years old me even now at 8 is occasionally.

Himawarigirl · 29/06/2021 08:38

Swapped our daughter at 2yrs 3 months and it went fine, did it at the same time as we swapped her room. Swapped our son at 2yrs 6 months and it was much harder, but most things like that have been with him. We had disrupted nights for quite a while as he kept waking, having always slept v well before. Not being scared exactly but saying he thought it was morning etc. I got him a gro clock so he could know that if the stars were on it then it was still night and we were all still sleeping. That seemed to help. Neither of them had tried climbing out of the cot.

Londonlady92 · 29/06/2021 12:45

Shes slept through 2 nights in a row weirdly so think ill hold off a while longer! Prob jinxed it now haha

My daughter never tried to climb out so we waited till she turned 3. She fell out of bed a couple of times for a few nights then sleep fine.

Rayna37 · 14/07/2021 21:00

Definitely not until they're climbing out! Unfortunately DS did this quite early compared to some of his friends. If it's a decent sized cot where the sides come off to make a cot bed, I can see nothing to gain and everything to lose by taking the sides off before you have to! That first week was a nightmare until we got a stair gate to keep him in his room; before we could just leave him to settle himself in the cot after stories, which never took long even if he protested. All of a sudden hours of the evening were spent waiting for him to fall asleep.

didihearthatright123456 · 14/07/2021 21:04

My twins are 2.3 years and they’re still definitely in a cot. Like others have said I don’t plan on doing it until I absolutely have to

Cominghome1230 · 14/07/2021 21:17

At 2 years and 3 months we put her in single bed. She now goes to sleep a lot better without so much messing around as she loves having a "big bed" I wish we had done it sooner

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 14/07/2021 21:19

2.5, he had a cot bed so could have turned into toddler bed but needed for sibling so he went straight in to a single bed. He loves it, but have to have guard on as he fell out first few nights and gets into all sorts of positions

yikesanotherbooboo · 14/07/2021 22:00

21 months for DC2
12 months as DC2 climbing out
Never managed to get jDC3 into a cot; never mind out.

Kayjay2018 · 14/07/2021 22:09

@Londonlady92 my little one has not been in a cot since about 10 months (she is 14 months now). I have her in a floor bed, baby proofed the room and baby safe toys in it and baby gate on the door. We still have the baby monitor so can see what's going on. She has slept through the night a few times, but I'm still breastfeeding and she does wake up for the odd feed. I don't find she gets out to play just yet, just comes running to the baby gate if she can't resettle and I'm not quick enough to stop her fully waking. At some point she will probably go in a more conventional bed but at the moment it means I can lay with her to settle her easier than lowering her into the cot which used to wake her

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 14/07/2021 22:14

when they could climb out of the cot with the grobag on (looking at you DS2 aged 17m!)

around 2y with most of them, mainly because I needed the cot for the next one!

Nyz9213 · 15/07/2021 07:53

2 1/2. She had never once tried to climb out of the cot but it was just time, she was getting a bit heavy to lift in and out. Didn’t make any difference to her sleeping. The bed had a removable bed rail which we kept on for a couple of months but took off.
