How old would you say my little boy is by guessing from his handwriting.

How old?

3 or 4 but probably 4

OppsUpsSide · 21/05/2021 21:13

I’d guess he’s in Reception

daytrogen · 21/05/2021 21:14

Reception would be my guess.

I think older. My kids are 8 and 6. Their handwriting is awful despite lots of practice. They are both left handed too which I think does make it harder for them.

lljkk · 21/05/2021 21:17

50:50 whether R or Yr1.

idontlikealdi · 21/05/2021 21:18

namesnamesnamesnames · 21/05/2021 21:22

JPduck · 21/05/2021 21:23

Year 1 at school

Thesearmsofmine · 21/05/2021 21:23

Around 7 or 8.

Vickyjane88 · 21/05/2021 21:23

He's 6, he thinks he says he's struggling.

Can't believe some of you think he's 2 😳

lljkk · 21/05/2021 21:26

yr1 or yr2, OP?

Melitza · 21/05/2021 21:27

I think his writing is fine for a 6 year old.
If you're worried ask his teacher.

I'm really not worried, he just said he's struggling, I'm thinking about getting him some writing books to help him.

yr1 or yr2, OP?
He's in Yr 2

I'm a ta in year 1 and this would be the standard of a child who is middle ability in my class. If he sounded out and spelt the words by himself that is pretty good!

lljkk · 21/05/2021 21:33

He won't be top of the class.
Doubt he's bottom, either.
His letters are well formed & spelling good.

Practice... is his route to doing better.

KnobJockey · 21/05/2021 21:34

I would have said 6/7. He can write in sentences, form most letters and is putting spaces in. Reception is 2/3 letter words I think.

lljkk · 21/05/2021 21:45

I forget exact details but true story is very close to this:

Start of school yr Reception, yr1, yr2, DS had mega-tantrums. Yr2 tantrum was definitely about him hating writing.

I finally clued up.

Summer between yr2 & yr3 I 'made' (before he could play computer games?) DS write a little 4 or 5 days/week. Maybe just 5 lines. Could copy out of BeastQuest. I didn't care. As long as he physically wrote something, almost daily.

Start of yr3: no tantrum, least of all about writing in class. Result

Just keep working with your lad, OP. He'll get there.

NoFashion · 21/05/2021 21:47

Reception. Or a more advanced child who is starting reception this September.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 21/05/2021 21:54

My dd is in reception and I'd say, based on the letter formation that this is year 1 or 2 standard, starting to think about doing joined up writing. To be fair, if it's an older child I wouldn't worry, it's legible.....and handwriting isn't a reflection of intelligence. If it's a reception child then I'd say they are doing pretty well!
