Would you allow 9yr old to buy Gucci?

My son loves fashion. He always like to look good bless him.

Anyway; he wants to buy a Gucci fedora hat which is £150. He has saved up £200 from pocket money.

What are you opinions on this?! Partner says it's up to him! I think it's madness 😂

@LolaSmiles

If you were secure in your parenting you would let him.

To be secure in their parenting, parents have to allow their 9 year old child to buy a designer hat?

Yes. It’s the aspiring middle classes who would be horrified.

Really? I'd have said it's the aspiring middle classes who would be more bothered about having the right brands.

I wouldn't be ok with DC spending their money on a designer hat because it's huge amount of money on a fashion item that will DC would like be over quickly. It seems really wasteful. That's not about class and everything about the fact that I don't think 9 year olds should be encouraged to blow their money on designer fads.

I don’t agree either. I’d be fine with not getting the hat

@earsup

Not read whole thread...just get a copy off the chinese sites....they are amazing, some are identical...also these hats are part of the drug dealer uniforms around here...along with the satchel bag..!!
Do not do this!

I would judge someone’s parenting for that far more than I would for letting a child who has saved their money buy a designer item.

I couldn't give a shiny shite whether someone's kid wanted an expensive hat or not.
But as a hat lover myself, I can confirm that I have probably lost more than I dare count. Throughout school, parties, uni, pubs, work, windy days etc, they are so easy to lose!
I have a paid of Gucci sunglasses which feel risky enough and I'm in my 30s!

Usually I'd say invest in something that'll last like a good jacket, jeans or boots, but at his age he'll grow out of them in a matter of seconds (I imagine) so he's possibly being sensible looking at accessories which (hopefully) won't be too small for him in the near future.
Clearly I don't have a 9yo but would some sort of bag be any better? Would he use one?
The lads I knew in school had shoddy backpacks but they weren't exactly into fashion...

No they are not secure enough, they want Lego or brio.

What brands do you buy to show how secure you are?

MarshaBradyo · 18/02/2021 22:13

It’s ridiculous anyway to sneer at Lego and brio whilst proudly defending a Gucci hat.

What a stance to take in life

pontiouspilates · 18/02/2021 22:16

If he has saved up for it, I absolutely would. Bless him, much nicer than spending it on Xbox games.

Weekends · 18/02/2021 22:20

Yes I would let my now 9 year old. I wouldn't be delighted, but it's better than spending it all in sweets.

kayakingmum · 18/02/2021 22:22

It's either his money or it isn't. He saved for it so it is his money. I would let him get it.
A hat isn't an awful thing (like cigarettes or even sweets e.tc.).
Maybe he will just have it in his bedroom and just enjoy looking at it. Maybe he will wear it and wreck it. Who knows. Either way it would probably more upsetting if you said no - you are in control of his money.
