Would you allow 9yr old to buy Gucci?

My son loves fashion. He always like to look good bless him.

Anyway; he wants to buy a Gucci fedora hat which is £150. He has saved up £200 from pocket money.

What are you opinions on this?! Partner says it's up to him! I think it's madness 😂

The hypocrisy of people insisting that Disney, Lego or Stokke are essential for child rearing Grin They're buying into consumerism just as much as this lad is with his hat. Difference is that those 3 brands are acceptable to a middle class demographic in a way that Gucci isn't.

Let the poor boy enjoy his hat. He may still yet turn out Communist, all isn't lost.

boymum1x · 17/02/2021 00:45

Some awful comments on here!
Bad parenting? Drug dealer? no thank you to being there child jezzzzz!!
I think the shop idea is a good suggestion only because he can see it in person and it's more exciting
However if he wants it now let him why not it's his money he clearly knows the value of money as his saved his own up himself not just expected it off you!
A decent pair of trainers are 80-100 I would rather my kid into fashion & brands than be a scruffy little git I don't see how that's shallow him taking care of his appearance? Each to there own though...
Agreed the hat is vile but will be funny to show him pictures of it when he grows up Grin

Genuinely don't get how people are comparing £150 on a hideous tacky hat to a box of Lego. It didn't have anything to do with class it's just ridiculous. It's not even adult size, is it? Worn once maybe. Probably won't go with anything else in the wardrobe.

It's more about use than anything

I spent £160 on timberland boots at 14 and wore them everyday. He won't wear the hat, that's the main thing

StellaDendrite · 17/02/2021 01:05

Haven’t read the thread but wanted to know if this is in the Daily Fail yet.

It’s classic Daily Fail material. Could even mock up a sad face hat wearing kid. 😂😂😂😂

But so feckin what? The kid wanted it, he set a goal and he worked towards that goal. There's plenty of adults frittering away cash on crap without a second thought. This took dedication.

Lego is not in any way essential for a kid growing up. It's nice to have, it's a lot of fun but it's a frippery. Not a necessity as a previous poster claimed.

FossilisedFanny · 17/02/2021 01:19

Gucci fedora hats are £280 on eBay, so £150 seems a bargain!

But no , I would be discouraging a 9 year old from buying one .

BarbaraofSeville · 17/02/2021 07:03

The £280 hats are the adult version, which retails at over £300.

There's a different child version at around £150.

A lot of the difference will be VAT, I assume, as this applies to adult but not children's clothing.

TolkiensFallow · 17/02/2021 07:25

I think this is all a learning curve for him and something he can learn within a safe family environment.

He’s saved the money, if it’s what he wants to buy then fine. He will either love it and treasure it or lose it or “go off” it. We all have to experience these things at some time. Young people who move out having never been allowed to make a mistake at home usually end up making terrible mistakes with worse consequences.

The idea of asking him to wait until the shops open is a good one - he may no longer want it! As an adult I usually try to mull over a decision before making it so it would encourage him to give it proper consideration.

If he buys it and loves it, he may still have it in 40 years and cherish it forever!

@BeTheHokeyMan

Could you maybe get him a cheap knock off version? I'd be worried that it could be snatched off his head walking around with an expensive hat. Don't understand all the pearl clutching about his savings ?! My kids are brilliant savers they keep all their birthday and christmas money. Also get money from both sets of grandparents every week too . It all adds up and they spend it on a mix of neccessaties and frivolous bits . They saved hard up to them how they spend it Confused
My understanding is that the ds wants to buy it himself. So he’d know of it was a knock off because it didn’t come from the place he wants to but it from.

Or if the op buys the knock off one and he doesn’t realise then he’s gotten mum to buy what he wants....which isn’t really a lesson.

A fair amount of kids want expensive Lego. Build it once. And never use it again.

It's the same thing!

And whether you think the hat hideous is irrelevant.

Would you be happy if you asked for (say) an Apple Watch for your birthday. you'd researched the options and liked the Apple Watch for various reasons, including what it looks like a d it's within budget, and the your partner bought you a cheap knock off for £25?

@ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia

The critical difference between brands for children is that toys such as Brio or Lego come in all price points. Brands such as Gucci etc only do mid to high and many silly ultra high price points and you can get similar items with same functionality (if not quite the look) for a fraction of the price. However would you rather one Gucci item which may be better cares for (and even have a residual resale value) or twenty cheap similar but cost the same.

Technically everything is branded but it's whether they offer suitable products at all price points or whether they only do high profit margins business rip off pricing.

Disney etc again is mainstream and have products at all price points. Plus there is countless choice from other competitors for similar products. Certain brands only do cheap eg supermarket own brands while offers only rip off pricing. Many toys like the wooden train sets are compatible with the original highest price Brio brand. Same with Lego as I have previously discovered at a drop in nursery who just relied on Wilco bricks as they are fully compatible with Lego but much less expensive. The little children do not care and have just as much fun!

You can most likely get cheap "knock off" Star wars Lego kits and your kids will just as happy playing with Yuda and Death Vader....
rockinaftermidnite · 17/02/2021 07:45

It sounds to me as if he's very much aware of the value - he's saved for it. Let him enjoy his fashionable, unique and happy personality! I'm sure he'd take care of it.

Meant to add Sionnah, that made me chuckle.

You need to ask yourself some serious questions about the shallow, superficial materialistic values which this child has evidently been taught. Poor kid

I'd love to see your reaction if you saw my wardrobe!!

There is no moral value on the price you pay for clothes. Luxury brand clothes are usually made by hand by very talented leather makers or couturier. They are very high quality and last a very long time. Better than fast fashion in my opinion.

LynetteScavo · 17/02/2021 13:01

If you're going to let him buy it, at least get him to wait for the shops to open so he can have the pleasure of going to the actual shop and having it in a bag.

By then he'll probably want a different overpriced item if nonsense Grin

Probably will be fast fashion for a 9yr old though.

Not read whole thread...just get a copy off the chinese sites....they are amazing, some are identical...also these hats are part of the drug dealer uniforms around here...along with the satchel bag..!!

It's nice to see the usual 'ooh people who express an opinion on a shopping topic must be middle class' argument has come up.

It's another world where parents suggesting decent toys for a primary school child instead of a designer hat is deemed to be 'middle class'.

Absolutely- as I said earlier it’s insecurity from the hyacinth types. If you were secure in your parenting you would let him.

LolaSmiles · 18/02/2021 21:22

If you were secure in your parenting you would let him.

To be secure in their parenting, parents have to allow their 9 year old child to buy a designer hat?
