Would you allow 9yr old to buy Gucci?

My son loves fashion. He always like to look good bless him.

Anyway; he wants to buy a Gucci fedora hat which is £150. He has saved up £200 from pocket money.

What are you opinions on this?! Partner says it's up to him! I think it's madness 😂

My son fell in love with an Abercrombie fedora age 8 when we lived in the ME. Money was a bit easier to come by there so we let him buy it (he wasn’t interested in other cheaper options). He wore it almost daily until it was stolen when we were back in the U.K a few years later. Whenever I look at photos of him in it from that time I am so pleased we indulged him as he really did get his money’s worth. We replaced it with a cheaper one, but he never really bothers with it as it isn’t the same. So I would say if it’s his money then let him go for - just take care it doesn’t get targeted by thieves!

Okay, I apologise for the hasty response re Manny!! Sorry, no idea who he was and I am seemingly getting attacked for being a rubbish mum!

No, I wouldn't.
At that price I'd want paying for advertising their products.
They sell fedora hats for a few quid.

It’s his money, if that’s what he wants then why not. It wouldn’t be what I would choose but I wouldn’t choose a ton of Lego either.

I mean it is madness. Also though if he’s saved up his money and this is what he wants And likes I’d let him buy it.

Pretty random thing for a 9 year old to want though. How does he know about Gucci hats?

virginpinkmartini · 16/02/2021 17:25

I would let him, with a very heavy heart. Its a learning opportunity, albeit an expensive one. Although it wouldn't hurt to explore first why he wants that particular one- if he says he likes the style, encourage him to find a similiar one with the aim of saving money. If he says he likes the quality, again, find similiar and explain how designer is marked up because of the name. And if he still wants it because of the status he thinks it will bring, then its an important conversation to have. You should really get to the root of 'why.' After all is said and done, let him purchase it if he still wants to. Its his money and it doesn't affect anyone else or hurt him physically.

marvinscarpark · 16/02/2021 17:25

No. I wouldn't spent that much money on an item of clothing for an adult so I wouldn't spent it on an item of clothing for a child.

MapleMay11 · 16/02/2021 17:28

Just read your update OP....a Gucci bucket hat says more county lines to me than fashion.

AIMD · 16/02/2021 17:29

Just looked up the hat. It’s horrendous!!!

😂😂

Would he be fobbed off with a fake?!

I love that he has such a unique interest!

Lammergeier · 16/02/2021 17:30

Lol no.

Surely at 9 it would be too big for him!? Unless it's a kids one? I have no idea about Gucci.

@PricklesAndSpikes

I'm afraid all I can picture is Manny from Modern family....

Probably not at that age if birthday and xmas money as well , maybe help him source it cheaper or something else
My ds 17 wanted a branded jumper for xmas but they were all £170 upwards so he changed his mind as said it was a ridiculous price , but £150 to us is a lot and to someone else it may be equivalent of a £5 to us .
Both my ds like brands , ds2 more do but we go to discount brand shops and keep eye out for sales etc , but still £80-100 trainers and £60 a top and I think thats a lot.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 16/02/2021 17:44

I blame you tubers for ds2 expensive tasteSmile

CoronaIsWatching · 16/02/2021 17:47

How much pocket money does he get? When I was 9 I got 50p a week Hmm

DavidsSchitt · 16/02/2021 17:49

There's one on eBay for £80 - designer AND environmentally conscious Grin

MrMeSeeks · 16/02/2021 17:51

Its his money, he’s saved it.
It it were a toy would people be quick to say no?

00100001 · 16/02/2021 17:52

@TatianaBis

This people that don’t get fashion just don’t get it and might as well have lot commented

Who says people don't get fashion? I love clothes, I've worked in fashion to some extent - modelling when I was younger - vile world - but didn't dim my love for clothes.

However I would still not allow a 9 year old spend £150 on a Gucci hat.

If you're investing money in a piece of clothing it needs to be something that will last. That's what I teach my kids.

If I spent £150 on a hat it would be a classic I can wear for 10 years. Children's taste changes with the wind. That's why it's a waste of money.

Well, in that case you'd buy your kids nothing that they were interested in ever Confused

Kid likes dinosaurs? Well sorry love, no dinosaur related books, t-shirts, toys, trips out etc for you! Your interests will only change with the wind!!!

MummytoCSJH · 16/02/2021 17:53

Yes I would let him - it's his money, why not. If he only wears it twice and regrets it, it was his decision and it will be a lesson. If not then great. He's done really well to save for something he actually wants and not nag you once you've said you won't buy it for him like most kids would do!

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 16/02/2021 17:54

No. It's just not appropriate in my mind (fine if people disagree) for kids to be into brands or indulged with them. That's something for late teens and adulthood. It's a real turn off when a child starts talking about brands. I know they get it on YouTube but it's still important that children don't get caught up in that shit till they are older. Pride in owning shit should stop at toys for under 14s in my opinion. Brands are 100% about showing off. As a parent, you need to help them not get into that.

And if you're the parent that values brands on your child as a sign of something, well there's a whole other problem there.

Yeah to me too ! Perhaps it depends on where you live. Def the case here .

Kids are indulged in brands from the day they're born 🙄 or do your kids have nothing branded at all? No Switch? No tablet? No toys from TV programs? No Disney stuff? Etc
whatisheupto · 16/02/2021 18:20

I'd be very tempted to teach him the economics of designer retail. Explain the cost of making the hat will be around £10, then you add on all the usual business costs, import costs, taxes, plus a margin for all the indirect costs like advertising, branding, employee costs, rent costs, insurance, IP, etc etc etc. With plenty of room still for a huge profit.... I'd hope he'd see that he would be buying a £10 hat with roughly a £110 donation to Mr Gucci himself. Grin

Hugoslavia · 16/02/2021 18:24

Shouldn't we be teaching kids about marketing and the absurdity of wearing labels, whereby they are not only paying an extortionate amount for fairly poor quality, but are advertising the products on behalf of the company selling them. They should be getting paid, not paying for the privilege of being a walking sandwich board. Then there is the issue of ethically and environmentally produced clothing. And also the issue of being a sheep/trying to fit in v being yourself. Labels thrive on making people feel unhappy if they are 'poor' and 'happy' if they can afford to wear labels, the irony being that they actually cause people to spend, not save and get into debt. I really feel that it's about time that children were educated on these issues. Life could be so much more rewarding and simpler.
