Would you allow 9yr old to buy Gucci?

My son loves fashion. He always like to look good bless him.

Anyway; he wants to buy a Gucci fedora hat which is £150. He has saved up £200 from pocket money.

What are you opinions on this?! Partner says it's up to him! I think it's madness 😂

This thread is fucking insane and I actually hope, OP, that it pushes you in the complete opposite direction and you let your son get the hat!

allfurcoatnoknickers · 16/02/2021 16:46

I agree with the pp who said wait until you can go in person for the whole experience. Take him to a Gucci boutique or concession, let him see the whole process from trying it on to getting it all beautifully wrapped and put in a bag.

I love fashion and still do - when I was that age, I remember my mum giving me the fashion pages of The Times with a Vivienne Westwood show in it - I was obsessed, I loved learning all about it, I drew "beautiful" dresses and was always trying to recreate them out of my dressing up box.

I still love fashion, I even own a couple of Vivienne Westwood dresses now. I've had a subscription to Vogue since I was about 13 and it's always been one of my biggest passions. I haven't turned out to be a shallow monster - I work for a charity and, pre-Covid did a lot of volunteering in my spare time.

mamatocaptainchaos · 16/02/2021 16:46

@Jobsharenightmare

Yes; he has wanted this hat for a few months and has saved from birthday and Christmas, with his pocket money as well.

I told him that I was not going to buy it for him and gave him my reasons why.

@TwelvePaws

They want a Barbie. Not a Barbara.

🤣🤣🤣 Brilliant.

mamatocaptainchaos · 16/02/2021 16:47

@Notanotherthing it really is! I think we will wait and see if the shops open first so he can go in and buy it though!

We were all young and dumb once. We all made mistakes.

Let your son make this mistake. Regrets help us learn.

TatianaBis · 16/02/2021 16:48

@00100001

Of course they do. I've been a kid, I've got kids I know exactly what they're like.

Kids want branded stuff because they are targeted by big business who want to make money out of them and their parents.

It's my job as a parent to educate them on consumerist pressure.

ItsDinah · 16/02/2021 16:48

Yes. Allow him to buy it but be clear he cannot be seen wearing it when he is with you. It is seriously big yikes yeuch. On the other hand, the Gucci X Disney Donald Duck ( Flash) Scarf is wonderful;he won't grow out of it and could probably hire it out to you. It is £205 so he needs to save up a bit more. Are there any older boys he looks up to that could help him cultivate better taste?

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 16/02/2021 16:50

Gucci monogram still hot and now for little children. I stay with Goyard as less street!

By the way I like the Gucci monogram bucket and also the straw fedora. Good taste but aren't most of these fake knock offs? A bit like Supreme etc as more replicated than factory for these ubiquitous street wear items these days. Even some dogs have collars and canvas carry bags with these traditional designer monogram patterns. Again not sure if they are the real deal though.

I would go more discrete with small or no logo high end brands.

Good luck to the child as I trust the investment is cherished, enjoyed and memorable until the next higher ticket price acquisition! Possibly if well looked after would give acceptable cost per wear.

I need to start putting more slush fund away for child (younger) as already has aspirations for Shetland or Icelandic pony as I am more mum gone to Iceland (Blue Lagoon than grocery store) so child can buy own pony as good idea mums!

mamatocaptainchaos · 16/02/2021 16:50

@ItsDinah he's 9. I don't think he needs to look up to older boys for 'better taste.' Surely everyone had their own tastes! Otherwise life would be utterly boring!

My DS is also quite into fashion and I'll go against the grain here and say I would let him buy it...

  1. it's his money, he has saved it
  2. it's nice to invest in nice things, hopefully he would learn to mind and appreciate it
  3. plenty of kids tech etc costs way more than this (Xbox, tablets, Switch etc)
  4. if he doesn't mind it and it gets ruined then hopefully he will learn a lesson about either minding things more carefully or not spending as much on clothing etc that he's not prepared to look after
  5. I actually think the hat is very cute! 🥰
Jobsharenightmare · 16/02/2021 16:51

Then I think you should do it OP. He'll learn from it either way and you've taught him the value of saving for something you really want...and also potentially that sometimes when we think some item will bring us happiness it doesn't or it does and we lose it!

SeaShoreGalore · 16/02/2021 16:51

Lots of judgemental people on this thread.

I would let him buy it.

Jobsharenightmare · 16/02/2021 16:52

PS. Yes I'd wait until he can decide in a shop though.

speakout · 16/02/2021 16:53

Are you into fashion OP?

MarshaBradyo · 16/02/2021 16:54

I wouldn’t here

But doesn’t mean you have to do same

Lookatthemshine · 16/02/2021 16:56

I can’t help but wonder how many people on here spend a fortune on football strips which are seasonal? If it’s his money let him decide and show him how he can get money back by reselling if/when he no longer lives it. It should have a residual value - unlike sports kits!

mamatocaptainchaos · 16/02/2021 16:56

@speakout I like to look nice but wouldn't say that I was into fashion, no. I own a couple Mulberry things and that's it for high end fashion.

OP posts:
draughtycatflap · 16/02/2021 16:57

I’m really disappointed that it wasn’t a fedora after all. I really liked the idea of a nine year old strutting about with a fedora and matching cape.

Knittedfairies · 16/02/2021 16:57

If he's saved up his money to buy the hat, I wouldn't stop him. I would try to make him wait until the shops are open again so he can see it on though. His money, his choice. He could have spent his £150 on his own body weight in Haribos or whatever; at least he'll have something to show for his cash.

AngryPrincess · 16/02/2021 16:58

Meh, fair enough.

ememem84 · 16/02/2021 16:58

good lord that's hideous.

But his money his choice - i assume you will actually have to physically buy it for him (credit card and all that) but if he's saved for it, why not.

yes there's the chance he won't wear it, or it'll get lost but as long as he understands this then go for it.

mamatocaptainchaos · 16/02/2021 16:59

He has a GoHenry account so he has his own card to use

OP posts:
SooMoony · 16/02/2021 16:59

I'd steer him towards eBay or some of those other preloved sites. In different times, I'd suggest trawling a few charity shops. However, if it is what he wants above all else, then let him buy it. My DD saved up more than that to buy herself a BMX bike at the same age, and we had no qualms whatsoever.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 16/02/2021 17:00

I'm more surprised a 9 year old knows the concept of saving more so than knowing what Gucci is.
