Covid Babies

Do you think there will be many? Perhaps a low birth rate this year? Smaller school classes?

Would anyone actually actively TTC during the pandemic? Intrigued to hear others views.

I was TTC earlier this year whilst we were in lockdown. I've far as I've seen and heard lots of people are still have babies, I'm not sure if there's less than usual

A midwife told me that they’re seeing more first time babies from lockdown. In all honesty people may have paused ttc at first but when it became clear that this is going to go on for a while I think a lot of people just carried on because you can’t put life on pause forever and some people don’t have the time to wait.

Lemonysherbet · 29/10/2020 14:06

I had a baby in may, obviously conceived pre pandemic and it makes me sad he will be known as a covid baby 😕

I dont care that my son might be known as a COVID baby. Who cares?!

Couples stuck together at home and not being able to go out = babies 😂

Thatwentbadly · 29/10/2020 14:52

I bumped into my old community midwife and she said they have a have number of babies arriving in the spring. People have had a lot more time of their hands and lovely hot summer.

Sunisshining12 · 29/10/2020 14:54

My friend commented that it would be terrible to get pregnant the way things are - no partners allowed to scans, hospitals risky for catching covid, local lockdowns keeping her away from family/friends, no baby groups on etc. I see her point, it’s not ideal. But how long do you put it on hold for?

Wonder if there will be an increase in PND with new Mums being stuck in all day.

I don’t think ‘Covid babies’ is offensive. It’s just indicative of the time the baby was born imo

I got pregnant with my 2nd before lockdown- my baby is not a Covid baby!!!
Must be hard for first time parents, although my trust now allows partners at scans and has increased visiting hrs for dads.
Personally I think there is a baby boom, life doesn’t stop and many people are now expecting/ hoping that wfh makes having a baby more viable.

EssentialHummus · 29/10/2020 15:06

A midwife friend told me that their department is looking manic for Feb.

I agree with user - I lost one earlier this year and at first we wanted to wait but really unless you're prepared to wait a year or longer I can see why you'd just get on with it (we are!). And that's before you start on older parents, fertility issues etc.

Tomatoandbasil · 29/10/2020 15:09

I’m pregnant and my midwife says there are loads of us!

SparklyOwl · 29/10/2020 15:13

I would imagine the homeschooling and lockdown put off plenty of people who have a young child or children already and I know a few who didn’t intend to get pregnant but either couldn’t have an abortion or opted against one because of the way they are currently being carried out.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 29/10/2020 15:16

How are they being carried out at the moment? Out of interest

gypsywater · 29/10/2020 15:20

I've been TTC the whole year!

Disappointedkoala · 29/10/2020 15:36

I've been pregnant this whole time and it's ok going to every thing by yourself but it is my second so it's not as momentous as your first (sorry, baby!). From speaking to the midwives I think spring will be very busy for babies - think there was a false sense of security that everything was getting better when it wasn't!

1990s · 29/10/2020 15:39

Thought about trying but worried about it all tbh.

Hoowhoowho · 29/10/2020 16:25

I’m a midwife and judging by the bookings I’ve been doing there is going to be a huge baby boom early next year. It’s just starting to calm down now so a bit quieter late May/June 2021. It was noticeably manic. I don’t think people are put off by COVID

Sunisshining12 · 29/10/2020 16:40

Interesting. Really thought people would be put off.

I got pregnant in August... am working from home, no social events. I thought it would be a convenient time to have morning sickness and not have to pretend to drink for 12 weeks.

When lockdown started in March, we did decide to wait, but then we thought we can’t wait forever and there’s no telling what could happen in the future... There might be a different pandemic next year.

And tbh at the time I was kind of hoping that it will all be over by the time my baby’s due.

My husband has been allowed for scans though.

BreathlessCommotion · 29/10/2020 16:45

Surely it's only first time babies. No one spends lockdown with their children and thought "well this was a great idea, let's have more!"

SomethingOnce · 29/10/2020 17:14

Quite, Breathless.

My own search history during lockdown includes ‘boarding school overseas’ and ‘sell kidney for cash’.

Fortunately, littlest DC was conceived pre-pandemic Grin

danidella · 29/10/2020 17:18

I found out i was expecting my first child the second week of lockdown. Ive asked the midwives ive seen if they had noticed a rise in pregnancy's but they said they haven't noticed much of a rise. I don't mind them being a covid baby. They would have been a honeymoon baby otherwise as we were due to go on our honeymoon in May.

Tasje · 29/10/2020 17:33

We started TTC during lockdown. I'd been unwell for a year and wasn't allowed TTC until I had surgery, which took ages to get booked and finally went ahead at the start of March. I'm also mid-30s so didn't want to delay anything given my age. I got pregnant in May. The plus side is WFH during fatigue/nausea etc, the downside is that both our families live overseas and we're not sure when we'll first be able to introduce them to the baby.

Greenhairbrush · 29/10/2020 19:00

I’ve had a few people mention that I was obviously bored during lockdown as I announced my pregnancy, but I was actually 5 weeks pregnant when we went into lockdown.
Not ideal but life isn’t always ideal. And I’m happy to be pregnant following a second mc at Christmas.

Tomatoandbasil · 29/10/2020 19:59

My pregnant is not my first but is a very welcome surprise after a long time TTC and we had given up. But I loved lockdown with my older child (even though both DH and I were juggling full time jobs and home-schooling) so I wouldn’t have been put off by that anyway.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 29/10/2020 20:16

I was actively TTC and am now pregnant. Apparently nhs scotland midwifery are busy!

easterbuns1 · 29/10/2020 20:19

I'm pregnant. When I went for my booking appointment my midwife said everyone had obviously been having sex over lockdown because she's been super busy with booking appointments.
