Fifteen years old and still no period? Getting very worried.

I've name changed for this.
My daughter was 15 in September, she still hasn't started her periods. She's fit and in good health, always has been. She has some signs of puberty, very small boobs (these started to develop about two years ago) little bit greasy skin. She was very skinny until about 18 months ago, she's now just normal slim, she's very tall though, about 5ft10/5ft11, not particularly sporty. She quite private so I know won't like me talking to her about it, I had planned to raise it in January if she still hasn't started though.
I'm starting to get quite worried, I think I might see if I can speak to her doctor next week. The doctor doesn't know her (or me) or any of my children, just because they haven't needed to see a doctor since they were babies.
Please help me be less worried!

I always think it's wise to get things checked out but I'm pretty sure there's a wide range of normal that she's not outside of yet. Is it possible she has started and not told you? X

Jaffajiffy · 26/10/2020 17:50

Are you sure she’s not started if she’s a private person?
Or started on the pill?
If she was super thin then perhaps that’s had an effect?
Another far-fetched (unlikely) idea might be Turner Syndrome

PlanDeRaccordement · 26/10/2020 17:55

What is your family history? When did your and your mothers periods start? This is more a predictor than anything else. The normal range is pretty wide. It can be 10-18. She is developing so the hormones are there. If it makes you feel better my eldest DD started at 17 also skinny. Not sure what is recommended in U.K., but for me at the time it was contact Doctor if no period by 18th birthday. I was worried just like you are. Luckily it showed up.

I think this does warrant a referral to get it checked out as per advice below

www.nhs.uk/conditions/early-or-delayed-puberty/

Lua · 26/10/2020 18:00

She might be too underweight. I think a trip to the GP might be wise.
Hope is nothing! But always best to be sure.

ludlowstreet · 26/10/2020 18:00

No, I'm certain she hasn't started. For one she's so tight with her money, she definitely wouldn't spend it on san pro and would want me to buy it. Also, not on the pill. We live rural and would need me to drive her anywhere she needed to go.
I started around my 14th birthday. Don't know about my mum.
Thank you all for even just answering the thread.

Quite a lot of people I know (including me) didn’t start their period till 14-15. It’s probably nothing to worry about, best to be on the safe side though

hiptobeasquare · 26/10/2020 18:05

I was 16 when I got my period so it maybe nothing. It is always best to get it checked though.

DramaAlpaca · 26/10/2020 18:05

I've heard anecdotally that taller girls can be later starting. My friend who's 5'11 started at 16, I'm almost the same height and was almost 14. As far as I'm aware 16, whileon the late side, is still within normal range. It's worth a chat with the GP if you are concerned, but personally I wouldn't worry just yet.

june2007 · 26/10/2020 18:05

I was 14.5 my sister was around 15, and my niece nearer 16.

TartanDMs · 26/10/2020 18:09

I was nearly 16 when I started. I'm short and have polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Level75 · 26/10/2020 18:10

I started at 15 and my sister at 16. We were both very slim.

BBCK · 26/10/2020 18:11

Totally normal. She’ll start when her body is ready. Hi

Whatthebloodyell · 26/10/2020 18:12

I don’t think 15 is that usual for a slim girl. I was a skinny s child and don’t think I started mine until I was 16. My mother did take me to the doctors after my younger sister started and I still hadn’t. I was easily embarrassed and HATED discussing my lack of periods and boobs, but was secretly relieved to go to the doctor’s and be told it was totally normal.

Annny27 · 26/10/2020 18:13

I was 15 or 16 when I started my period and the last in my year! Just a slow developer haha

ludlowstreet · 26/10/2020 18:15

Just looked up Turner Syndrome. I think this is extremely unlikely given her height. She's always been tall. I'm 5ft3 and my husband is 6ft3 for context.

I was a month after my 13th.

NothingIsWrong · 26/10/2020 18:22

I was 15 and also tall. My 13yo very slim tall DD hasn't started yet either.

Lemonsyellow · 26/10/2020 18:23

15 is a normal age to start periods. I was 16. My friend was 17. There’s nothing in that link posted above that I can see that indicates anything might be wrong. She’s tall, slim, has developed breasts. It’s fine.

mumwon · 26/10/2020 18:24

I was going to say dc with Turners Syndrome are small
Op is she on any medication - some medications can affect both growth (not in you dd case) & periods (some can even make them early) (Epilepsy & ADHD medication can cause late development)
What about her fathers family?
The clue I think is how slim she is - I assume she eats well? (Checking she doesn't have an eating disorder in a round about way) Not vegetarian or vegan?

Lemonsyellow · 26/10/2020 18:27

Starting puberty is not the same as starting your periods. You start your periods a couple of years after starting puberty. Your daughter has already started puberty.

ludlowstreet · 26/10/2020 18:31

She's on no medication, never has been, and is lucky enough to have perfect health. She's not skinny anymore, hasn't been for 18 months, she's just normal slim, I'm pretty certain she will be a healthy bmi. Not vegetarian and eats well. Her boobs really are tiny, like breast buds and have been for a couple of years. I have big boobs, again for context.

I didn’t start until I was 14 and a half. I’ve always been tall, skinny-normal weight and always suffered with PCOS which could be a factor?

ktsc89 · 26/10/2020 18:33

Remember my mum telling me she started her period at 15. No health problems.

ludlowstreet · 26/10/2020 18:34

Question for the late starters please -
Did you go to the doctor and if so what happened?

Going to get in the bath, back later. Thank you all so much for the replies.
