Fifteen years old and still no period? Getting very worried.

I've name changed for this.
My daughter was 15 in September, she still hasn't started her periods. She's fit and in good health, always has been. She has some signs of puberty, very small boobs (these started to develop about two years ago) little bit greasy skin. She was very skinny until about 18 months ago, she's now just normal slim, she's very tall though, about 5ft10/5ft11, not particularly sporty. She quite private so I know won't like me talking to her about it, I had planned to raise it in January if she still hasn't started though.
I'm starting to get quite worried, I think I might see if I can speak to her doctor next week. The doctor doesn't know her (or me) or any of my children, just because they haven't needed to see a doctor since they were babies.
Please help me be less worried!

NHS says dont seek input until over 16 - www.nhs.uk/conditions/periods/starting-periods/#:~:text=Most%20girls%20start%20their%20periods,seem%20to%20get%20easily%20embarrassed.

I was nearly 16. Now have two kids. I have pcos but it didn’t stop me getting pg.

I would consult go if nothing by16. Provided she seems energetic and well. If any fatigue etc I would encourage her to go with you to get blood tests done at the gp

terriblyangryattimes · 26/10/2020 20:33

I started a month before my 16th birthday. I was slim but not too underweight and did about 4 afternoons of dance lessons so I think we assumed it was that that made them come later than 'normal' but I was never taken to the doctor or anything (90s)

Month after my 16th birthday. Found it upsetting and embarrassing to have to go to the doctors just after my 15th birthday to be told it’s perfectly normal and my mum needed to stop making me think it was a problem.

Lemonsyellow · 26/10/2020 20:40

Do not take her to the doctor at 15. She’s showing signs of puberty. Leave it for at least another year.

doireallyneedaname · 26/10/2020 20:41

I’m 5’7, I got one period age 15 and then nothing. Doctors visit at 16, was put on the pill and that started them. I stopped a few months later because I didn’t like the pill, and I’ve been fairly regular ever since. 31 now!

Namechange8471 · 26/10/2020 20:43

My mum was 16, i was 11 so it's not always genetic 😂.

I may get flamed for this but does she have an eating disorder? Just with you mentioning her being private about it.

5lilducks · 26/10/2020 20:48

My best friend at school started hers when she was 16. She was fine and had no issues. Maybe its best to just speak to your GP and see what they say.

CrystalMaisie · 26/10/2020 20:58

I think your plan to speak to the gp first is fine. Is your dd concerned about her height? I may be wrong but starting periods normally slows or stops further growth in height, so may be worth a follow up for that if it’s an issue for her.

snowone · 26/10/2020 21:09

I was over 15 when I started my periods. I remember being jealous of all my pals and then traumatised when it happened. I do have poly cystic ovaries but not diagnosed until my first pregnancy

yummyeclair · 26/10/2020 21:11

Maybe a late starter if borderline polycystic ovary syndrome. Girls can start as late as 18/19. Easy to remedy by GP

Fizzystar1 · 26/10/2020 21:25

I’m 5’9 and was very slim. I didn’t start my period until I was in college. I think it was a couple of months before my 17th birthday. My mum mentioned it to my doctor and said if I hadn’t had a period by the time I was 17 to get it checked out.

ODFOx · 26/10/2020 21:41

Women (and dolphins) reach sexual
maturity based on genetics and body weight/bmi. If your daughter is sporty and really slim with low body fat she won't start until the end of the age range suggested by her genes.
15 yo isn't necessarily a problem at all but if you and she are concerned go to the gp.

Beebeeboo2 · 26/10/2020 21:43

Do telephone consultation with just you & GP, then take it from there.

TheVanguardSix · 26/10/2020 21:47

I was your DD! Tall, skinny, sporty, put on weight around 15 but had no boobs (never really have had boobs, apart from when I’ve breastfed). I had my period at 16. No health problems in the least. Just a late bloomer.

Mistymonday · 26/10/2020 22:03

@mumwon

I was going to say dc with Turners Syndrome are small Op is she on any medication - some medications can affect both growth (not in you dd case) & periods (some can even make them early) (Epilepsy & ADHD medication can cause late development) What about her fathers family? The clue I think is how slim she is - I assume she eats well? (Checking she doesn't have an eating disorder in a round about way) Not vegetarian or vegan?
I started at 13 and I was veggie since conception. Fyi.
tsmainsqueeze · 26/10/2020 22:18

I was aprox 15.5 when i started , i was slightly overweight , had boobs , no health problems.
I didn't get checked by a doctor , i can't ever remember being concerned , was quite glad really .
My mother was 10 when she started , my tall , normal weight 12 year old daughter has no signs yet .
I don't think i would be concerned yet we are all so different , i have always been regular and conceived very easily.

Bool · 26/10/2020 22:27

Omg I was 15. Relax. Poor thing. She’s lucky not to have to deal with all that so young.

yummyeclair · 01/03/2021 22:26

I was slim and 18 and very irregular and got diagnosed with Pcos at 20 All treatable and have 2 DC .

2021mumma · 01/03/2021 22:41

I read something about periods starting around when someone weighs 7stone. How much does she weigh?

GeorgiePorgieOrgie · 01/03/2021 22:42

Zombie thread!

Strokethefurrywall · 01/03/2021 22:45

I'm 5ft 8" and didn't start until I was nearly 15, but worth getting checked out.

Delphigirl · 01/03/2021 22:48

My dd1 was 15 and 5 months. 5’7 and slim. It is within normal range, try not to worry!

2bazookas · 01/03/2021 23:12

She's still within normal range , so as she's healthy and fit I wouldn't worry.

Try to see it as accepting and celebrating her healthy body just as she is. Her mental health and self esteem are farmore important than when her periods start.

Young women get far too many messages that they are somehow inadequate or inferior .

bleachblondemom · 02/03/2021 20:12

I didn’t get mine til I was 15, I am tall and was very slim in my early teens with a low BMI. It’s very common for those who are underweight to get their period later.
