When do your children get washed?

SaveAHorseRideAHighlander · 12/10/2020 20:05

So this is probably a strange one - please bear with me!
At the moment my children, 9 and 6, get a shower in the morning before school, and to be honest it causes problems most mornings as they stay in the shower for ages and we end up rushing to get ready on time/I end up shouting like a banshee to 'put your shooeeeeessss ooonnnnn'! Grin.
Some of my friends wash their kids at night, before bed.
So my random question is, when do you wash your kids?
If you wash them at night, I'm assuming they then put clean pants on? Do they then put clean pants on again in the morning, or not until the nighttime wash again (which in my mind is the same as them putting on clean pants in the morning then not changing them until the following morning after a wash, IYSWIM? Or clean pants night and morning? Or no pants and clean pjs every night? Confused

@whatswithtodaytoday

Why are children wearing pants in bed? (And what a weird sentence to write.) No adults wear pants in bed, so why would children need to?

Mine is still in nappies so not relevant, but I imagine we'll carry on doing a bath at night and clean pjs every two or three days depending on how dirty they get.

My ds always wears pants in bed and we’ve always worn pants in bed as adults!! Way too uncomfortable without them!
wincarwoo · 12/10/2020 21:24

Really? Clean pjs more than once a week? More than one pair of pants a day?
For my two shower/bath twice a week. Quick wash in between. No drama.

Shelby30 · 12/10/2020 21:24

3yr old gets a bath every single night and clean pjs. No pants to bed though, that's unusual.

I would def switch from morning to evening. I find the bath relaxes her and it's part of her bedtime routine.

2 baths a week. I'm enjoying the pre-puberty lull before the constant stink and grease

refusetobeasheep · 12/10/2020 21:24

Another one who always goes commando. Thinking is you risk a build up of bacteria or yeast if always covered as the moisture builds up and provides the perfect breeding ground - although those who go for the bigger knickers at night should be OK as they could be airy enough. Or get moisture wicking material.

M0mmyneedswine · 12/10/2020 21:24

Shower or bath every othet night, clean pjs every 2 nights. never pants in bed here

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 12/10/2020 21:25

Mine are 7 and 10. They have a shower before they go to bed. Once they start to get a bit pongy then we'll swap to morning showers but as we only have one bathroom I'm holding out!

The only person who wears pants to bed is DH and he doesn't wear anything else.

Yubaba · 12/10/2020 21:26

Shower at night here, and no pants in bed.
Dh and I sleep naked and ds1&2 (10&12) sleep in shorts but no top or sometimes in clean boxers if it’s warm.
I can’t stand wearing clothes in bed, they get tangled and annoy me.

bluebluezoo · 12/10/2020 21:28

Ahh the good old pants vs no pants debate.

At 9 and 6 i wouldn’t be over bothered about daily washing. At that age I think mine had a shower after swimming two or three times a week.

No pants in bed btw. I hate clothes to start with, plus my youngest went through a nasty bout of recurrent thrush at about 6 and it was recommended we put her to bed with naked lower half to allow a bit more air circulation.

Hi all, we've had a little nosey behind the scenes and we are happy to leave this thread up for now. Thank you for all the reports.

@EstherMumsnet

Hi all, we've had a little nosey behind the scenes and we are happy to leave this thread up for now. Thank you for all the reports.
What on earth were people reporting the thread for!?!!

This whole thread has utterly confused me!

My 2 pence......
No need to report.
Pants for bed always, usually in addition to pjs. Shock at no pants! Although ds doesn’t wear anything at all.
Bath kids before bed, quick wash in morning and clean clothes.

Bumpsadaisie · 12/10/2020 23:10

Mine (11 and 9) shower in the evening and put pyjamas on, they don't wear pants with pyjamas. Change pyjamas twice a week or more often if they are dirty.

Bumpsadaisie · 12/10/2020 23:12

And I just cannot fathom wearing pants in bed! I wear nothing at all, not even PJs.

Let yourself breathe!

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 12/10/2020 23:20

Our 3 yr old has a bath/shower every evening, partly for routine, partly because he comes home from nursery literally caked in mud. PJs, changed every other day (unless he covers them in breakfast so sometimes changed daily). No pants.

Interestingly, the pants thing was up for debate recently when DS stopped wearing nappies at night. I don’t wear pants to bed, I find it uncomfortable and think it’s good to let things breathe. DH was of the view “blokes wear boxers” to bed and assuming DS would be the same. In the end, we went with no pants purely to make it easier for DS to use the potty in his room at night if he needed it. It’s working for us.

Seriously79 · 12/10/2020 23:26

I'm 41 and i wear pants in bed 🤔 never realised that it was a 'thing' to not wear them.

Gooseysgirl · 12/10/2020 23:35

7 yr old DS has a quick 2 minute shower most nights because he is usually pretty grotty and smelly by the end of the day. 8 yr old DD showers or bath Tu, Th, Su in winter, daily in the summer. DS wears PJs no pants to bed, his choice since he potty trained. DD wears clean pants to bed at night under nightdress/PJs, again her choice... we have gazillions of pants.

RiseUpWiseUpEyesUp · 12/10/2020 23:36

Night panster here. I was converted at one point to no pants, but the cats sleep under the covers with me now so it feels a bit wrong 😂

The “letting it breathe” reason though - how is it breathing if it’s covered in PJs (it’s not, no different to wear pants) or encased by a duvet/blanket (it’s still not, it’s warm under there too!). Unless you’re sleeping spread eagle with no covers on every night, I can’t see much breathing going on!

RiseUpWiseUpEyesUp · 12/10/2020 23:37

(Totally missed the point of the thread with my post, sorry OP. I don’t even have kids. I just wanted to join the pants debate Grin)

myhobbyisouting · 12/10/2020 23:52

"I've never known any female to wear underwear to bed it's so uncomfortable"

How do you know what the females you know are wearing to bed? Confused

And why are you wearing uncomfortable underwear?

nickelbabe · 12/10/2020 23:53

Especially as so very many females have said on this thread that they do indeed wear underwear to bed

myhobbyisouting · 12/10/2020 23:53

One of my dcs wears pants in bed and the other doesn't. One wears socks in bed and the other doesn't. One baths about twice a week and showers once. The other showers every other day!

NoSquirrels · 13/10/2020 00:04

There’s a very varied mix in this house of them as wears pants to bed, and them as don’t. It’s not fixed in stone either. Hot summer nights aren’t chilly winter ones, after all. I’m baffled by the people who are baffled that others do differently!

DappledThings · 13/10/2020 00:28

Pants in bed is really weird to me. I had no idea people did this.

Coldhandscoldheart · 13/10/2020 06:49

@Ibizababyy there are a number of trolls who frequent MN with somewhat specialist interests (usually small children’s/teenagers underwear and toileting habits although also Box Room Troll) who will start an apparently innocuous thread in order that people will do as they have here & share stories of their children’s underwear and toileting habits.
So most threads like this will be reported.

Micah · 13/10/2020 07:29

The “letting it breathe” reason though - how is it breathing if it’s covered in PJs (it’s not, no different to wear pants) or encased by a duvet/blanket (it’s still not, it’s warm under there too!). Pants are close fitting. This means it’s harder for moisture to evaporate and air to circulate, and also traps a layer of air increasing the temperature, providing the warm, dark, moist environment bacteria and yeast thrive in.

Pj’s are usually looser, same with duvets etc, so there is increased airflow, so things are cooler and any moisture gets more chance to evaporate.
