Pampers or cheaper brand?

Having my first DD in December and am going to start to buy nappies and things gradually so I don't have a last minute panic. Was going to go for Pampers as it is the obvious choice. MIL said to me I am being ridiculous and should buy the cheapest I can. Not wanting to sound ridiculous but am I being stupid in thinking Pampers would be better or am i just paying for the brand name? Am quite fussy with products.

get some free samples from your ante natal group and see what you think. imo you get what you pay for, especially the fastenings which rip on the cheaper ones. but some babies have longer bodies/legs and not all nappies fit all babies.

both mine were in Huggies - I found their tape fasteners to be better than Pampers.

i had huggies mostly the first time but this time mostly pampers. some of the supermarkets' own have rigid fastening bits which left marks on dd2's legs.

I used allsorts with mine, never found any different tbh

i didn't use pampers cos they test on animals.

i use the tescos ones cos they arent tested on animals. never had any problems and all my kids are/were heavy wetters.

I used Pampers with ds - but Huggies fitted dd better. Moved to Tescos ones when she got older -generally Ok but will leak - especially overnight. Don't go overboard and buy too many too early as they grow so quickly and they aren't in the first sizes for very long.

On this website Tescos Ultra are the best. Check out the reviews under 'Find the best'. It's a shame you want to buy disposables though. Cloth nappies are much nicer !

Hate pampers(didn't know that titania, so def won't use them again) because of the sticky fasteners. They always get stuck on the little skin and it's horrid pulling it off.

I use Huggies, Asda's own or Tesco's own. Tescos' are the best I've found so far.

Where did you hear that, Titania? What exactly do they test on animals? I've been to the Pampers R&D place in Germany and saw lots of babies and toddlers testing nappies (!) but no mention of animal testing.
I do find Pampers suit ds better than any other brand, as it happens, but am not particularly pro them more than any other nappy - different nappies suit different babies.

Have used Tesco's and Huggies and now use Nature (available from Waitrose - and Sainsbury's I think). Is it only me that doesn't like the smell of Pampers?

Asdas own (George) mostly, occasionally Boots own or Tesco's, if on offer. I just get the cheapest I can find and have found them much of a muchness.

personally i used huggies for newborn then have used either pampers or huggies since did once try boots own make and found they leak easily so have stuck with the branded ones since

• as it's not just a leaky nappy it's wet clothes maybe wet bedding and believe you me you have enough washing as it it with out adding to it.

sainsburys own are good, asda are ok. found huggies useless.

but am now a cloth nappy user and can recommend them instead.

I started off using Pampeers but tbh they just leaked. I found Asda's George nappies to be so much better - and cheaper.

Tesco's (but not their really cheap range).

pampers are run by procter and gamble....one of the worst for animal testing. they do pantene and all sorts. will find the website hang on...

I have used huggies and pampers and Asda'a own and asda's are actually pretty good.

I used Pampers with DD. I tried a few right at the start - lots of free samples (Pampers, Huggies, Asda, Sainsburys, etc.) Pampers suited us best. Didn't like the Active Fit ones though.

we tried huggies and pampers initially and then used pampers for ages.
then after he was about 12 months, his nappies leaked at night and we switched to huggies which i now prefer

i have heard that nature baby and asda ones are very good too though

we use pampers the ones in the purple packet have done for both mine. Having said that used Tesco ultra on holiday and they were lovely very soft, don't know whay I went back to Pampers really. Nappy snobbery ridiculous really.

I've used all sorts over the years. Really cheap nappies tend to be rubbish (you would discover that the minute you used them) but, IMO, supermarket nappies (certainly Tesco and Sainsburys) or Boots own brand are as good as, if not better than Pampers and Huggies. I always find Huggies smaller than Pampers. I have been using mainly Tescos lately but ran out at the weekend and could only get hold of Pampers and I actually think they are less absorbent than Tescos, so there you go. Your MIL is right IMO but don't use really really cheap nappies.

We only use the really, really cheap nappies (Tesco Value and the like) for poos, as my daughter won't even contemplate using a loo to poo on, and I can't see the point in paying out for Huggies when they're only on her for three minutes. I wouldn't recommend them for using all the time though, they aren't as soft as they should be for a newborn, the outer is plasticky, and they're not flexible at all.
