Pampers or cheaper brand?

Having my first DD in December and am going to start to buy nappies and things gradually so I don't have a last minute panic. Was going to go for Pampers as it is the obvious choice. MIL said to me I am being ridiculous and should buy the cheapest I can. Not wanting to sound ridiculous but am I being stupid in thinking Pampers would be better or am i just paying for the brand name? Am quite fussy with products.

We tried huggies and boots own but found both were useless but have found pampers to be brilliant - especially the active fit once DS was moving around a lot. I have a friend who swears by huggies so I think it must be different for each baby.

Perhaps you could buy a small pack to do you when DD arrives and see how you get on. You'll probably be doing lots of shopping anyway...we thought we were totally prepared and DH still made at least 4 trips to mothercare in the first week!!

We used Pampers for the first few months after DD was born. Then we tried Huggies but we found Pampers fitted DD better compared to Huggies. We also tried Tesco, Sainsbury's & George and they're all equally as good but I find that Pampers is still the best one for DD at night. Now that DD is slightly older, Huggies fits her pretty well too, so we get Huggies/supermarket's own brand (whichever's on offer) for 'day use' and still use Pampers at night. None of the brands I've mentioned gave my DD any nappy rash - which is the most important thing.

I'd say just buy a pack each of 2-3 different brands and just test them out as you go along.

Have bought pampers and stuck with them. be careful that you don't overstock though- they grow really quickly (babies not nappies ) in first few sizes. size 3 is the longest my dd has been in a size

at first you change them so reguarly it does not really matter how well the absorb so cheap ones do the job.

i used sainsburys own, only cost £2.50 or less and were smaller than big brands so fitted more snug. huggies new born are massive, pampers were ok but alot more expensive than sainsburys.

Fran1 · 19/10/2004 23:30

I think the answer is don't buy too many until dd is born!!

Huggies and sainsbury own make seemed to give my dd a sore bottom. So i have stuck with pampers ever since.

mummylove · 19/10/2004 23:45

i think you may also find that we will all confuse you

prob best you just buy a few brands and see which suits your babies bottom the best.

every babies bottom is different, some are very sensitive.

but my dd is 19 mths now and i find pampers have the best fit and absorbtion but they are very expensive

Pampers fastening tabs (even on the newborn FFS) were too rigid and dug in.

Huggies much nicer and softer. My sister used the purple Tescos.

Note, with a brand new baby if he's skinny he might leak out the sides - get the preemie nappies from Boots (my sister's top tip).

janeybops · 29/10/2004 22:06

Hi,
My dd could only wear pampers as all other makes seemed to leak.

DS wears pampers active fit mostly with some huggies if I have a voucher. Don't like the fastenings so much on huggies.

Try a few over the weeks and see which you prefer.

Don't buy more than 1 packet of newborn size though as they grow out of them so fast. DD withine a week or two. DS never wore newborn size as far too small for him. (only go up to 11 lbs)

Wait to see how big baby is before buying loads is my advice.
